THE MENTALIST, GERRY MCCAMBRIDGE B It was the men’s figure skating final of the Winter Olympics when I was 16. I lay on ‎ our living room floor excitedly watching the battle between the Brains: American Brain Boitano facing Brian Orser in Canada. Both of them had been world champions. Both of them deserved to win. As a Northern Californian, I was for my fellow countryman. He also grew up in Northern California. We’d skated on the same ice. Brain performed successfully. The champion! I jumped in the air when his score went up.‎ But what happened next is what I’ll never forget. Brain sat in front of the camera, surrounded by a group of journalists. Brain was talking about his career and his medal, talking to the whole world. A terrible sinking feeling went through me. I could never be in the Olympics, I thought. I loved skating because I could express myself with my jumps and dances better than words.‎ What if journalists asked me questions like they asked Brain? I’d freeze up like the ice beneath my skates! And yet, there was so much I would love to say, about my family and all the support they’d given me and about following my dream of being a skating champion.‎ I worked very hard the next few years -- on the ice and especially off. After journalists talked to me and although my heart pounded every time I spoke to them, I got to know them. And they got to know me. Slowly I learned that the best approach was simply to be myself, to be honest and gracious and do my best, just like on the ice, to answer their questions.‎ So when my big moment came four years after Brain’s, I was ready. Remember: when you do the thing you fear most, you put an end to fear.‎ ‎24. What information can we get from the first paragraph?‎ ‎ A. The author lives a difficult life. ‎ B. What was the author ready to do according to the last paragraph?‎ ‎ A. Do her best to win. ‎ B. Enter the Olympic final. ‎ ‎ C. Make friends with reporters. ‎ D. Talk to the press afterwards.‎ C Scientists have been interested for years in the observation that ratios(比率)of ‎ finger lengths differ in men and women. In men, the ring (fourth) finger is usually longer than the index (second); their socalled 2D∶4D ratio is lower than 1. In females, the two fingers are more likely to be the same length. Because of this sex differences, some scientists believe that a low ratio could be a marker for higher prenatal hormone(产前激素) levels, although it's not clear how the hormone might influence finger development. The 2D∶4D ratio has also been fingered in connection with brainrelated characteristics—most often in males—such as depression, lefthandedness, musical ability, and homosexuality.‎ In the latest such study, psychologist Mark Brosnan and colleagues at the University of Bath in the United Kingdom photocopied the hands of 74 boys and girls aged 6 and 7.They compared the measurements of the second and fourth fingers with the children's scores on a standard UK test of math and literacy. In boys, the lower the ratio, the better their math score, the team reports in the May issue of the British Journal of Psychology. The boys with the lowest ratios also were the ones whose abilities were most skewed in the direction of math rather than literacy. These differences are small but significant, says Brosnan. With the girls, there was no correlation between finger ration and numeracy, but those with higher ratios—probably indicating low hormone levels—had better scores on verbal abilities.‎ These sexspecific correlations show how tricky it is to define the roles of sex hormones, says psychologist S.Marc Breedlove of Michigan State University in East Lansing. The range of normal levels of the hormone is different in males and females, so comparable levels would have very different meanings depending on the sex of the individual. And the timing of hormone surges is as important as levels.‎ Nevertheless, Brosnan believes finger measurements might be useful for predicting cognitive abilities—although he acknowledges that “we are not suggesting that finger length measurements could replace SAT tests”. Others are more cautious, pointing out that scientists still have not confirmed that finger ratio is a reliable marker for prenatal hormone levels.‎ ‎28 .What can we learn from the first paragraph?‎ A.Scientists never show interest in people's fingers.‎ B.Many women have different kinds of fingers.‎ C.In males, the ring finger may equal the index in length.‎ D.In females, the ring finger may equal the index in length.‎ ‎29 .What is the author's attitude to Brosnan's research?‎ A.Supportive. B.Positive. C.Neutral. D.Indifferent.‎ ‎30. We can infer from the passage that________.‎ A. in girls, the higher the ratio, the better their maths scores B. finger length contributes to people's academic abilities C. it is easy to give a definition of the roles of sex hormones D. Brosnan is serious about his research ‎31 .What's the main idea of this passage?‎ A. Finger ratio is critical to people's future.‎ B. Finger length measurements may be useful.‎ C. Finger length is related to children's scores.‎ D. Finger ratio is a reliable maker for hormone levels.‎ D Integrity Integrity is the quality of being honest and strong about what you believe to be right. The concept of integrity has played a key role in moral philosophy throughout history and is promoted in all societies because of its importance to social relations. ‎ Individual integrity is vital to society, one that enables people to make use of their capacity for critical reflection, does not force people to take up particular roles and does not encourage individuals to betray each other. Besides, societies can be favorable to the development of individual integrity. ‎ Individual integrity can lift up the spirits of the entire society. It can shape the lives of people living in a particular society, the lives of all fellow people and, in its broadest sense, even the destiny(命运) of a nation. By contrast, if those living in the society are corrupt, it could have bad effects, jeopardizing the healthy morality of the society.‎ On the other hand, a society can be favorable to the development of individual integrity. Society expects and requires integrity. A society consisting of people of integrity, and people who never compromise on their principles, could have a positive mark on the personal development of its members. Being a part of such a morally lively community could serve as a basis for absorbing traits of good character. This could be of a distinct advantage to any individuals in the society.‎ However, some social structures are of the wrong sort for some individuals to pursue(追求) integrity. If that is the case, we have to ask questions about the moral nature of society first before raising questions about individual integrity. Questions about integrity may turn out to be about what kind of society it is, rather than about the relationship between individual interests and characteristics of a society. The pursuit of adequate individual integrity often depends, not so much on understanding who one is and what one believes and is committed to, but rather understanding what one’s society is and imagining what it could be.‎ Under no circumstances can we underestimate the importance of human integrity in a society. People, who are honest, trustworthy, compassionate and caring, are the factors decisive in the growth of individuals as well as the development of a society.‎ ‎32. Individual integrity has been valued in society because ______. ‎ A. it helps develop philosophy ‎ B. it is the basis of critical thinking ‎ C. it is important to social relations ‎ D. it ensures people’s particular roles ‎33. The underlined word “jeopardizing” in Paragraph 4 probably means ______.‎ A. destroying B. strengthening C. assessing D. influencing ‎34. The writer believes that ______.‎ A. social structures guide the formation of individual integrity ‎ B. the nature of society is decided by economic development C. the pursuit of individual integrity changes with time D. individual integrity depends on what one believes ‎ ‎35. Which of the following shows the development of ideas in this passage?‎ A.‎ B.‎ C.‎ D.‎ CP: Central Point P: Point Sp: Sub-point(次要点) C:Conclusion 第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分) ‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ How to Create a Mind Map ‎ Most of us think visually but we write textually. 36 It also makes the information we list more difficult to process, remember, and share.‎ ‎ 37 It combines the brain’s visual nature with our tendency to write down words. We end up with a diagram that combines logic and order in a less structured manner. This promotes clearer thinking and better comprehension. 38 ‎ ‎ So, how do you create a mind map? The most basic method is to just use a pen and paper, or a marker and whiteboard. It begins with a central topic or idea, then flows outward. 39 The next level of topics is represented by branches extending from it.‎ ‎ There aren’t really any rules for creating mind maps. While most flow outwardly from the central topic, some users prefer to build mind maps in one direction. 40 This can make groups of ideas easier to identify and remember. It also makes a mind map more enjoyable to create and use.‎ ‎ Mind maps are extremely effective for taking notes, planning a project, brainstorming an idea, presenting information to others, and many other uses. Take out your pen and have a try.‎ ‎ A. They help to clarify thinking.‎ ‎ B. This goes against how our minds actually work.‎ ‎ C. They help us save time by focusing on key issues.‎ ‎ D. A mind map is the perfect answer to this dilemma.‎ ‎ E. Think of it as a tree, where the central point is the trunk.‎ ‎ F. It’s also a lot more enjoyable than simply writing down lists.‎ G. Others like to add colors, pictures, or symbols in their mind maps.‎ 第II卷 第三部分 英语知识运用(共两节,满分45分)‎ 第一节 完形填空 (共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分)‎ ‎ 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项(A、B、C、D)中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。‎ On Sunday morning in Rio, 41 Chinese women’s volleyball team captain Hui Ruoqi made a powerful spike (扣杀) to seal it 19-25, 25-17, 25-22, 25-23, applause and cheers almost 42 the roof of the stadium. It’s definitely a wonderful idea to buy your parents birthday gifts of a kind from China and undoutedly the gifts will be special and unforgettable for them.‎ Honestly, it’s hard to decide which one of the three kinds suits them finest. It depends on many factors. However, personally I’d prefer silk shirts to Chinese tea or Mi cell phones. Even though it is nowadays very easy to buy silk products worldwide thanks to the global economy, silk shirts bought from China will undeniably be quite different. After all, China is home to silk and silk souvenirs are of the superior quality across the world. ‎ Anyway, whatever your decision is, any choice of yours means much. Please remember me to your parents.‎ ‎ Sincerely,‎ ‎ Li Hua
