Fools’ Day
April Fools’ Day falls on the fist day of April. It’s the only of the year when you can play tricks on others and needn’t worry about them getting angry. You must make sure the jokes are good for both sides. Don’t make your tricks mean or dangerous.
First Modern Olympics
On April 6,1896, King George I of Greece welcomed people to the modern day Summer Olympic Games in Athens.
Back then, Athens was just a small village, and news about the Games was unable to reach many people. As a result, only 245 athletes took part in the games. They weren’t chosen by their countries like they’re now. Instead, they came by themselves and paid for the journey themselves. Ever since then, the Summer Olympic Games have been held every four years in a different city around the world.
Healthy Day
April 7 is World Health Day. This day is not just about hand-washing and healthy eating. Each year a different them is selected. For example, the theme of 2012 Healthy Day was Ageing and Health.
This year, Healthy Day will focus on high blood pressure. The main causes of blood pressure include stress, too much salt in your food and too little exercise.
Earth Day
We call the Earth our “mother”; however, our mother is facing lots of problems. April 22 this year marks the 43rd Earth Day. It’s a day to remind us to care about the planet. On this day people do things to help improve the environment and cut down their energy use. Earth Day comes only once a year, but it reminds people to live in a green way every day. Dogs have long been known to pick up scent(气味)that humans can’t, but they may also be able to tell time using their noses. The theory has been around for some time, but a new book backs up the idea that “dogs smell time”.
“As each day has a new smell, its hours mark changes in smell that your dog can notice,” explains Professor Alexandra. The dog expert makes the claim in her new book, Being a Dog, which is based on her research at Barnard College’s dog Cognition Lab, of which she is the founder.
While for most humans, the world is mainly visual(视觉的), for dogs, their world is based on scents. Dogs are often used to sniff out drugs, explosives, and even cancers, thanks to their surprising sense of smell.
Even for humans, scents can give clues as to what time of day it is, such as the smell of freshly boiled coffee in the morning. The expert believes that dogs can notice small changes in scent during the day, giving them a sense of time.
“Smells in a room change as the day goes on. Hot air rises, and it usually rises
in currents along the walls and will rise to the ceiling and go to the center of the room and drop.” Professor Alexandra explained in an interview with Fresh Air. “The dog, I think, can smell the movement of that air through the room.” She adds.
This could explain why a dog can tell when its owner is due to return home. If the loyal dog is able to notice the level of its owner’s declining scent since he/she left the house, it may be able to predict roughly when he/she is due to come back.
28. What does the underlined phrase in the first paragraph mean?
A. Supports. B. Challenges. C. Doubts. D. Raises.
29. What has the expert found?
A. Dogs can pick up scents that other animals can’t. B. Dogs may not be that sensitive to scents.
C. Dogs have a special sense of smell. D. Dogs can tell time through smells in the air.
30. How do dogs know when their owners are coming back home according to the text?
A. By the changes in the color in the center of the ceiling.
B. By the smell of the freshly boiled coffee in the morning.
C. By the level of declining scent after they leave.
D. By the temperature of the air after they leave.
31. What can we learn from the text?
A. Dogs can predict when a guest is going to visit.
B. Humans can also sense time through smell
C. Professor Alexandra is the founder of the first dog lab.
D. Dogs understand the world in a similar way to humans.

Five years ago, I was sent to a better middle school. For me, everything there was new and strange. After I had been there for two months, there was an important test in the middle of the term. It covered all my courses. In that test, I didn’t get a good grade, but most of my classmates got an A.

I thought about what I had done during the past months, and I found I had done nothing to improve my grades. I thought I should work harder.
After that, I paid more attention to the teachers’ talking in the classes, and I asked my teachers or my classmates when I didn’t understand something. I studied very late at night when I met with difficult problems. Most of all, I came to understand the importance of taking notes in class. As a result, I did better in some tests.
About three months later, the most important test came at the end of the term. This time, I stood out not only in my class but also in the grade. From then on, I have tried to do my best when I do something because I know if I want something, I should work hard for it.

C. She forced him to work harder.
D. She asked his teachers to talk with him about his problems.

Five Steps to Better Handwriting
Some kids love handwriting, but others hate when it’s time to put their pen to paper. Maybe they are worried about their handwriting. Are you one of them? 36__ Here are five steps that really work!
Get a great grasp
Try this—hold your pencil at the top and try to write your name. Pretty hard? But when you hold your pencil the correct way, writing is much easier. 37_ Hold it in place with your thumb(大拇指),and your index(食指) and middle fingers.
Let the lines be your guide
Lined paper is your friend! Those lines can help you create letters that are the right size and proportion(均衡). 38 Also be sure to fill up the lined space completely. Those capital letters should be from the bottom line to the top one.
Slow down
If your writing is hard to read, try slowing down a little. If you rush,it’s hard to control where you stop and start your letters.
Lower the pressure
39 That makes it harder to make the smooth lines. Try easing up and don’t hold the pencil too tightly.
40
Lots of games require you to write or draw pictures. So even though it’s not schoolwork, you’re still using the skills you need to control your pen better.
A.Play games.
B.Ask for more advice.
C.So “a” should be half the height of a capital “A”.
D.You’ve been writing since you were a little kid.
E.Some kids press down really hard when they write.
F.The good news is that just about everyone can improve their handwriting.
G.The best way to hold a pen or pencil is to let it rest next to the base of your thumb.
