They should get over that. There are places in the world that are best seen and experienced on water, including new destinations. Check out our picks for the 4 best cruises.‎ Antarctica and the ‎South Shetland Islands Icebergs, glaciers (冰川), whales, penguins and elephant seals are the big draws to the “Great White Continent”. In this destination list, you’ll dress a heavy jacket for tours exploring the cold, bare landscape, blue-lighted icebergs and other sights. Upscale French line Ponant Cruises’ 264-passenger ships cruise the region late November through January.‎ The Galapagos ‎ Nature rules over these islands, about 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador (厄瓜多尔), and local creatures are surprisingly unafraid of humans. You may find yourself stepping over sea lions to cross a beach, eye-to-eye with a blue-footed bird, diving with young sea lions and getting very close to a curious iguana (鼠蜥). The 92-passenger Celebrity Xpedition cruises the islands year-round.‎ Alaska‎ ‎ Seeing a glacier break brings high drama. On small ship line Alaskan Dream Cruises you’ll also communicate with bald eagles and seals as you quietly paddle in a remote bay. Travel routes avoid the tourist spots in favor of a Southeast Alaska wild experience —you’re more likely to see a leaping whale than a jewelry store. The line’s ships carry fewer than 60 passengers on spring and summer cruises.‎ The ‎Arctic Come for the polar bears that rule the North Pole, but stay for the astonishing event of the Midnight Sun, plus the sights of glaciers, icebergs and surprising areas of wildflowers. Keep your telescope balanced to spot elephant seals, white whales, bearded seals, rare birds and arctic deer in an extremely beautiful landscape. Hurtigruten’s 318-passenger polar discovery ship MS Fram sails her June to August.‎ ‎36. Comparing with other adventure travel types, the author thinks having a cruise is .‎ A. ordinary B. risky C. traditional D. interesting ‎37. In October, which of the following cruises can offer you a water experience?‎ A. The Arctic. B. The Galapagos.‎ C. Alaska. D. Antarctica and the South Shetland Islands.‎ ‎38. What can we learn from the text?‎ A. The Antarctica cruise line runs at least four months a year.‎ B. Passengers can take a beach walk in a Galapagos cruise.‎ C. Tourists can shop jewelries on Alaskan Dream cruise line.‎ D. The Arctic cruise is the only line for polar sights.‎ ‎39. In Alaska, travel routes do NOT pass through .‎ A. tourist spots B. wild sights C. remote bays D. beautiful beaches ‎40. To get a view of seals, how many choices do you have when making cruise tour decisions? ‎ A. 1. B. 2. C. 3. D. 4.‎ B There was a little boy visiting his grandparents on their farm. He was given a slingshot (弹弓) to play with, but only in the woods. He practiced in the woods, but he could never hit the target. Getting a little discouraged, he headed back to dinner.‎ As he was walking back, he saw Grandma’s pet duck. Just out of impulse (冲动), he hit the duck in the head and killed it. He was shocked. In a panic, he hid the dead duck in a woodpile only to see his sister watching. Sally had seen it all, but said nothing.‎ After lunch Grandma said, “Sally, let’s wash the dishes.” But Sally said, “Grandma, Johnny told me he wanted to do it today, didn’t you, Johnny?” And then she whispered to him, “Remember the duck?” So Johnny did the dishes.‎ Later, Grandpa asked if the children wanted to go fishing, and Grandma said, “I’m sorry, but I need Sally to help make supper.” But Sally said with a smile, “Well, Johnny told me he wanted to help.” And she whispered again, “Remember the duck?” So Sally went fishing and Johnny stayed at home.‎ After several days of Johnny doing both his housework and Sally’s, he finally couldn’t stand it any longer. He came to Grandma uneasily and said that he killed the duck. She gave him a hug, and said, “I know that. But because I love you, I forgive you. But I was wondering just how long would you let Sally make a slave of you.”‎ How often we allow ourselves to be enslaved by our unwillingness to expose our wrong doings? We just go on living and sacrifice (牺牲) our peaceful mind. So we cannot even enjoy the good in our lives. Everybody, please take courage to speak out your faults and you will be rewarded with great relief and relaxation.‎ ‎41. The little boy went back home discouraged because .‎ A. he missed his slingshot in the woods B. his grandparents only let him play in the woods C. he found it boring to play with a slingshot on his own D. he always missed the target while playing with his slingshot ‎42. By saying that Sally made a slave of Johnny, the grandmother meant that .‎ A. Sally educated Johnny to take his life seriously B. Sally asked Johnny to hire a hard working slave ‎ C. Sally often asked Johnny to watch over the slave D. Sally controlled him and made him obey her orders ‎45. What would be the best title for the passage? ‎ A. Remember the Duck?‎ B. Human Relationship C Peaceful Mind ‎ D. Experience in the Countryside C Amy Chua is the author of “Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother.” In the book, Chua, also a professor at Yale Law School, states her child-bringing-up method learned from her parents moving here from China years ago: no sleepovers, no television, no grades lower than an A.‎ ‎“We guessed her book would cause much disagreement,” Wang Feifei, editor at CITIC Publishing House, told the reporter “We don’t take it as a traditional parenting book, largely because it involves cross-cultural conflict.” The book has been available online since Mid-January and ranked No. 80 in sales on Joyo.com, a Chinese version of Amazon. It is to receive wider distribution (发行) at bookstores after the Feb. 3 Chinese New Year holiday.‎ The book has struck a nerve with Americans, especially American mothers. An article published earlier this month in the Wall Street Journal, called Why Chinese Mothers are Better, lit a strong reaction (the article now has close to 8,000 comments and most of them are critical, many of them completely unfriendly).‎ And that’s just what she did on Tuesday night’s show “The Colbert Report.” The host Stephen Colbert put Chua on the spot “People have accused you of saying that the Chinese way of raising a child is better to what Western mothers do. True or false?” he asked “Uh… false,” Chua replied, her voice uncertain. Colbert seized the opportunity to point out Chua’s inconsistency (不一致). “So you raised your children in a worse way?” Chua made a set of defensive talking points, some of them more convincing than others. Her arguments in defense of strict parenting were “I think if you give a 5-or 8-year-old free choice, I think that’s going to be video games.” Chua thinks that anyone can be what she calls a “Chinese Mother”; all you have to do is to demand hard work, determination and discipline from your children. “I think they are fundamental American values.”‎ ‎46. What is Amy Chua’s method of bringing up her children like according to the passage? ‎ A. Very open. B. Very loose.‎ C. Completely scientific D. Very strict ‎47. What can we infer from the second paragraph?‎ A. The book is on sale since mid-January.‎ B. In February more people will buy the book.‎ C. The book is a traditional parenting book.‎ D. Joyo.com is a Chinese version of Amazon.‎ ‎48. From the third paragraph, we will know .‎ A. American mothers admire Chinese Mothers B. Chinese mothers are better than American mothers C. many Americans dislike Tiger mother’s method D. American parenting is completely different from Tiger mother’s ‎49. What does the underlined word “they” mean in the last paragraph?‎ A. American values.‎ B. Free choices for children.‎ C. Hard work, determination and discipline.‎ D. Parenting methods.‎ ‎50. How did Chua defend herself when questioned by Stephen Colbert?‎ A. Explaining her parenting methods with American values.‎ B. Taking two children’s stories for example.‎ C. Talking about her own experience in raising children.‎ D. Proving disadvantages of video games to children.‎ D This is the best time and this is the worst time; this is the time of great material richness and this is the time of desert of soul. Everyone seems to be rushing around for something but they have never fulfilled their dream. Everyone tries to seek happiness but it seems to be nowhere to be found. ‎ When asked “What on earth can make you happy?”, most modern men would give similar replies such as becoming extremely wealthy, or getting promoted in work and then becoming very wealthy. When asked “What will you do with your wealth?”, they would make a long list of things ‎ they have been longing for. However, haven’t you noticed the multibillionaires are not as happy as we common guys suppose them to be? Haven’t you noticed that the multibillionaire celebrities don’t even enjoy the fundamental freedom of going shopping with their own families without being followed by annoying paparazzi?‎ If we focus our happiness on such big issues, we are bound to be unhappy all through our life, because those big issues might just occur to us once in a blue moon.‎ As Socrates (苏格拉底) once put it, “He is the richest man who is content with the least, for content is the wealth of nature.” But how can we “be content with the least”? If you pay due attention, our life is loaded with little joys, sometime too little to be noticeable. Stop once in a while in your rush to your destination, look around and you will see that there are always little things worth cheering for. You got an “A” in a test. Good! You listened to all inspiring lecture. Great! You offered a helping hand to someone who had a flat tire. Amazing! Your dream girl or boy greeted you with a sweet smile. Fantastic! And so on and so forth. Let’s cheer for the little joys in life!‎ Please keep in mind that never should we wait to be happy!‎ ‎51. What is the best title of the text?‎ A. Money Means Happiness B. Happiness Is All Around Us C. Dreams Make Our Life Rich ‎ D. Satisfaction Is Unacceptable ‎ ‎52. According to the text, which of the following statements is NOT true?‎ A. Money doesn’t necessarily bring happiness.‎ B. Desire for wealth makes people unhappy.‎ C. Great occasions are worth celebrating.‎ D. We should ignore little joys in our life.‎ ‎53. What does the underlined phrase in the third paragraph probably mean?‎ A. Rarely. B. Regularly. C. Normally. D. Frequently.‎ ‎54. According to Socrates, people who are “content with the least” are .‎ A. greedy B. ambitious C. optimistic D. reliable ‎55. In the fourth paragraph, the author suggests that we should .‎ A. set up great goals in life ‎ B. make full use of opportunities ‎ C. enjoy every moment in life D. seek significant issues in life ‎ 第II卷(满分35分)‎ 第一节:阅读表达(共5个小题,每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 阅读短文,并按照题目要求用英语回答问题。‎ Normally, I loved birthdays. When my son and three daughters were little, my husband, Charles, and I always made sure to have dinner, followed by a big cake and presents.‎ Later, when the kids grew up and lived in different states, they always called to wish me a happy birthday. But this year I could have skipped the whole day, knowing there was one call I wouldn’t be receiving, the one from my daughter Patty, She’d passed away unexpectedly just a month before. One thing which made me feel a little calm was a voice message that she’d left on my cell phone the night before she died, telling me she loved me.‎ Over the following days I played her message of wishes over and over again, listening to the last words she said. “I love you very, very much, Mom.” Then, a couple of weeks before my birthday, while I was doing laundry, I accidentally dropped my phone in the washing machine. Quickly I pulled it out and dried it off, but when I checked my voicemail, Patty’s message was gone. I cried, heartbroken. Day after day I kept checking my voicemail, hoping Patty’s message would reappear. It never did.‎ On the morning of my birthday, I received my son’s wishes. However, all I wanted for my birthday was to hear Patty’s voice again. “Happy birthday.” Charles said, “Let’s go out for dinner and a movie. It might help take your mind off things.” Charles was right. I turned off my phone, settled into my seat in the movie theater and let the film take me away. But the minute it ended I started thinking about Patty again. As we were walking out of the theater, I turned on my phone. It rang, signaling I’d gotten a voice message. Probably just my youngest daughter, Leslie, calling to wish me a happy birthday, I thought. ‎ I dialed up voicemail and the message began. A study showed that tea — especially black tea — might be the best choice. A team of researchers studied the amount of black tea sold in 50 countries. People in Ireland were the top tea-drinkers. On average, each person there drank more than two kilograms of black tea a year. People in China, Morocco and Mexico drank the least tea. The study showed a link between black tea sales and rates of diabetes. The study showed that few people have Type 2 diabetes in countries where people drink a lot of tea. ‎ Coffee is one of the world’s most popular drinks — perhaps the most popular. Results of a large American study may help to make it even more popular. The study showed that drinking coffee might help reduce the risk of oral cancer, a deadly form of cancer. Researchers questioned 970,000 American men and women who took part in the 30-year-long study. One of the questions was about their use of coffee. They found that people who drank about four cups of coffee a day reduced their risk of oral cancer by 49 percent compared to those who had little or no coffee. ‎
