Paul answered,“Yes,my brother gave it to me for Christmas.” The boy was surprised.“You mean your brother gave it to you and it didn't cost you nothing?Boy,I wish…” He hesitated.
Of course Paul knew what he was going to wish for.He was going to wish he had a brother like that. But what the boy said surprised Paul greatly.
“I wish,” the boy went on,“that I could be a brother like that.” Paul looked at the boy in surprise, then he said again, “Would you like to take a ride in my car?”
“Oh yes,I'd love that.”
After a short ride, the boy turned and with his eyes shining, said,“Paul, would you mind driving in front of my house?”
13
Paul smiled a little. He thought he knew what the boy wanted. He wanted to show his neighbors that he could ride home in a big car. But Paul was wrong again. “Will you stop where those two steps are?” the boy asked.
He ran up to the steps. Then in a short while Paul heard him coming back, but he was not coming fast. He was carrying his little crippled brother. He sat him down on the step and pointed to the car.
“There he is, Buddy, just like I told you upstairs. His brother gave it to him for Christmas and it didn't cost him a cent. And some day I'm going to give you one just like it…then you can see for yourself all the nice things in the Christmas windows that I've been trying to tell you about.”
Paul got out and lifted the boy to the front seat of his car. The shining-eyed older brother climbed in beside him and the three of them began an unforgettable holiday ride.

“Cool”is a word with many meanings. Its old meaning is used to express a temperature that is a little bit cold.As the world has changed, the word has had many different meanings.

If there is one thing certain to get Brazilians on their feet,it is the Rio Carnival(狂欢节).
13
Held in Rio de Janeiro, the country’s biggest city, the carnival began on February 20 when the mayor gave key of the city to Rei Momo—the Lord of Misrule(无序之皇)
On his orders, each year people turn the city into a paradise(天堂) of dance and music. The
following six days are so fun of parades(游行),street dancing, fantastic clothes and partying(聚会)that many people forget about eating and sleeping.
“It was the passion(热情) of the carnival that attracted(吸引) me to Brazil and made me settle down in Rio.”said Bob Nadkarni,a British man who has lived in the city for several years .For many Brazilians, the centerpiece of the carnival is samba(桑巴舞),a typical Brazilian dance.Every year, tens of thousands of visitors and locals show off their passion and energy in the streets, following the beat(节拍)of the Latin music.
The climax(最高潮) to this street party is the float(彩车)parade,in which floats decorated with tons of fresh flowers by various samba schools and local communities move through the city.On the top of each float stands the candidate for the Drum Queen, who is chosen at the end of the party. While most people are free to enjoy the celebrations. Rio’s police officers have to keep a clear head.Following the murder of three officers in a gunfight early last week, the Brazilian Government has tightened security(防御) in Rio.The street fighting, robbery and sex crimes that accompany(伴随) the carnival are very difficult to police.
Carnivals began in ancient Rome as a celebration at which people fed wild wolves,in honor of the city’s founder who was said to have been raised by a she-wolf.Brazil gave new life to this tradition and so despite(不管) the troubles, the carnival will remain a symbol of the country’s culture.

After 10 seasons wearing the No 8 on his back, Kobe Bryant will become No 24 next season. The reason for the surprising decision by the Los Angeles Lakers super guard last week has become a hot topic for discussion.
Bryant wore No 24 when he was in early high school, but he changed to No 33 in his senior year. He switched to No 8 when he was selected by the Lakers in 1996,and has not been changed since.
Bryant has refused to explain the decision until the end of the play-offs(季后赛).So guessing Bryant's purpose has become a popular game among NBA fans and newspaper columnists(专栏作家).
There are all kinds of guesses. Many say that Bryant wants to leave the past behind and have a fresh start .He has often been criticized for playing to benefit himself and not the team as a whole. Others say that he may be trying to compare himself to Michael Jordan. Jordan was famous for his No 23 jersey(运动衫).Some, such as NBC Sport columnist Michael Ventre, argue that it is "all about money" .Bryant will make more money by selling new jerseys to his fans.
Some speculations are more about fun .For example, there is an opinion that Kobe is actually just a diehard(非常执著的)fan of the popular TV drama "24".
All this talk has turned the number change into a major issue. It seems that there is a lot of fuss(大惊小怪)over something that should be pretty simple.
Jersey numbers have their own special meaning in American sports, especially basketball. Players choose their number when they join a team and they usually stick with that number for the rest of their career. When a great player retires, his team will honor him by retiring his number.
13
To some extent(到某种程度), the jersey is the player, and the player is the jersey. Thus when you see the famous No 23 for the Chicago Bulls, you immediately think about Michael Jordan. A No 32 Miami Heats jersey recalls the image of Shaquille O'Neal, and the Houston Rockets' No 11 belongs only to Yao Ming.
Lots of stories are behind players' jersey number choices. Jordan said that he chose No 23 because it was roughly half of 45.Jordan's elder brother wore the No 45 in college. Yao Ming once said that the No 11 stands for two people in love-meaning him and his girlfriend Ye Li.
( ) 33.How long has Bryant been wearing No 8?
A. Since he started to play basketball B. For ten seasons.
C. Since he entered high school. D. Since he left the Lakers.
( ) 34.Which of the following is NOT a guess about Bryant's motive to change his number,
according to this passage?
A. He wants to leave his past behind and have a fresh start.
B. He wants to compare himself to Jordan.
C. He wants to earn more money.
D. He wants to show that he is a man of great importance.
( ) 35.Why did Jordan choose No 23?
A. Because that number would make him famous.
B. Because that number would make his fans miss him.
C. Because that number was related to the number his brother once wore.
D. Because that number was easy to remember.

The study, by German sports psychologists at the University of Munster, was reported in New Scientist magazine. They showed video recording of taekwondo(跆拳道) matches to 42 experienced referees(裁判). One fighter wore blue and the other wore red. D. It is reasonable that wearing red makes individuals feel more confident, although this hasn’t
yet been tested.
E. Researchers found that those who wear red tops, jackets or clothing score 10 percent more in
any competition than if they were in another color.
