They sleep through meetings. They never pay. They don’t even use bathrooms when they have to go.‎ However, Ehmke puts up with such rude behavior, and he does it happily. Why? Because he designs homes for gorillas, bears, lions, and other zoo animals. And he enjoys the challenge of looking at the world through their exotic (奇异的) eyes.‎ ‎“The role of a zoo designer is to think as much as possible about what will make each animal comfortable, happy, and active,” says Ehmke, director of the Minnesota Zoo in Apple Valley.‎ ‎“It would be wrong to say you can know what an animal is thinking and feeling,” he adds. “But we do our best to get as close to that as possible when we’re designing homes for them.”‎ Most zoo visitors focus on the animals, not on the habitats and barriers that fence the animals in. But details like these have received extra attention since December, when a female Siberian tiger escaped from her enclosure (围栏) at the San Francisco Zoo. The 4-year-old, 350-pound cat killed one person and injured two others.‎ The incident raised fears among zoo goers and sent staff at zoos across the nation rushing to evaluate how safe their own exhibits are. Still, experts say, the tragic event should not scare people away from zoos.‎ ‎“There have probably been 5 billion visits to zoos in the last 50 years,” Ehmke says. “This is the first time this has happened.”‎ ‎11. What is Lee Ehmke?‎ A. An official. B. A professor. C. A designer. D. A feeder.‎ ‎12. What does the underlined expression “Lee Ehmke’s customers” refer to?‎ A. Architects. B. Animals. C. Bathrooms. D. Visitors.‎ ‎13. Focusing on the habitats and barriers begins with __________________.‎ A. architects’ designing homes for the zoo animals B. animals’ looking at the world through their exotic eyes C. a female Siberian tiger’s escaping and killing persons D. the nation rushing to evaluate how important the zoos ‎14. Which of the following is true according to the passage?‎ A. All the zoo animals in the passage are very easy to deal with.‎ B. The purpose of a zoo designer is to make the zoo animals’ life easier.‎ C. Many of the zoo visitors would pay attention to the animals’ enclosures.‎ D. There are 5 billion tragic events that happened in the zoos in the last 50 years.‎ ‎15. What’s the best title of the passage?‎ A. The other side of the zoo fence.‎ B. The other side of the tiger.‎ C. The habitat of the tiger.‎ D. The escape of animals.‎ B Not all vegetables need lots of sunshine. Mark Hoffman and his wife own a bed-and-breakfast guesthouse in rural Kempton, Illinois. They often serve their guests fresh products from the garden.‎ The Hoffmans have been growing food and flowers for twenty-five years. For almost ten of those years, Mr. Hoffman has been experimenting and working with shade (阴凉) plantings. He says, ‎ ‎“The bottom line here is that most plants will produce more in full sun. But if you do not have full sun, there are other choices.”‎ For example, he grows tomatoes near oak trees. Oak trees can produce a lot of shade. But Mr. Hoffman says his tomato plants grow as long as they get five hours’ direct sunshine a day, especially morning sun. Not only does this go against the traditional advice that tomatoes need six, eight, even twelve hours’ full sun a day. It also shows how plants and tree roots can share nutrients and water.‎ Mr. Hoffman says plants with wider leaves seem to do better in shady environments. He also found that his potatoes did better partly in shade than in full sun.‎ Moving them out of the sun helped control an insect problem. Mr. Hoffman does not use pesticide (农药). Instead, he planted the potatoes in the shade, especially on the east side of the tree. The potatoes get morning sun, but they are shaded during the hottest part of the day. Some insects dislike shade, and the hottest part day is when they do the worst of their damage.‎ Time of day, sun intensity (强度), shadows from trees, walls and buildings all influence how much sunlight falls on plants. And people interested in shade planting should also remember something else. The term “shade” can describe different amounts of darkness. It can even mean different things in different parts of the world.‎ ‎16. How many hours of sunshine are enough to keep tomato plants growing in Hoffman’s garden?‎ ‎ A. Five hours a day B. Six hours a day ‎ C. Eight hours a day D. Twelve hours a day ‎17. From the passage we can know that ______ .‎ ‎ A. plants with wider leaves produce more in full sun.‎ B. as a matter of fact, plants don’t need to grow in full sun.‎ C. the more sunshine plants get, the more they will produce D. plants with wider leaves grow better in shadows ‎18. All of the following can influence how much sunlight falls on plants EXCEPT ______.‎ ‎ A. length of day time B. brightness of the sun ‎ C. changes of the season D. shadows ‎19. Which of the following can best describe Mr. Hoffman?‎ ‎ A. Curious B. Experienced C. Easy-going D. Funny ‎20. We may read the passage on a website in the section of ______.‎ ‎ A. environment B. travelling C. agriculture D. lifestyle C People in the United States honor their parents with two special days:Mother’s Day, on the second Sunday in May, and Father’s Day, on the third Sunday in June. These days are set aside to show love and respect for parents. They raise their children and educate them to be responsible(有责任感的) citizens. They give love and care. These two days make us think about the changing roles of mothers and fathers. More mothers now work outside the home. More fathers must help with child care.‎ These two special days are celebrated in many different ways. On Mother’s Day people wear carnations. A red one symbolizes a living mother. A white one shows that the mother is dead. Many ‎ people attend religious services to honor parents. It is also a day when people whose parents are dead visit the cemetery (墓地). On these days families get together at home, as well as in restaurants. They often have outdoor barbecues for Father’s Day. These are days of fun and good feelings and memories.‎ Another tradition is to give cards and gifts. Children make them in school. Many people make their own presents. These are valued more than the ones bought in stores. It is not the value of the gift that is important, but it is “the thought that counts”. Greeting card stores, florists, candy makers, bakeries, telephone companies, and other stores do a lot of business during these holidays.‎ ‎21. Which of the following is NOT a reason for children to show love and respect for parents?‎ A. Parents bring up children.‎ B. Parents give love and care to children.‎ C. Parents educate children to be good persons.‎ D. Parents pass away before children grow up.‎ ‎22. What do you think “florists” do?‎ A. They sell flowers.‎ B. They make and sell bread.‎ C. They offer enough room for having family parties.‎ D. They sell special gifts for Mother’s Day and Father’s Day.‎ ‎23. Which do you think is right about “carnation”?‎ A. It has only two kinds of colors. ‎ B. It refers to the special clothes people wear on Mother’s Day or Father’s Day.‎ C. It’s a kind of flower showing love and best wishes.‎ D. People can wear carnations only on the second Sunday in May.‎ ‎24. What do you know from the passage?‎ A. Mother’s Day and Father’s Day are both in May.‎ B. Fewer women worked outside the home in the past.‎ C. Not all the children respect their parents.‎ D. Fathers are not as important as mothers at home.‎ ‎25. So today I want to give you some wisdom about how to make the most of the time you spend in the kitchen. Here are three tips for great cooking on a tight schedule:‎ ‎1. Think ahead. The moments when I think cooking is a pain are when I’m already hungry and there is nothing ready to eat. So think ahead of the coming week. When will you have time to cook? Do you have the right materials (材料) ready? 27 ‎ ‎2. Make your time worth it. When you do find time to cook a meal, make the most of it and save yourself time later on. Are you making one loaf of bread? 28 It takes around the same amount of time to make more of something. So save yourself the effort for a future meal.‎ ‎3. 29 This may surprise you, but one of the best tools for making cooking worth your time is experimentation. It gives you the chance to hit upon new ideas and recipes that can work well with your appetite and schedule. The more you learn and the more you try, the more ability you have to take control of your food and your schedule.‎ Hopefully that gives you a good start. 30 and don’t let a busy schedule discourage you from making some great changes in the way you eat and live!‎ A. Try new things. ‎ B. Ability is easily improved.‎ C. Make three or four instead.‎ D. Understand your food better.‎ E. Cooking is a burden for many people.‎ F. Let cooking and living simply be a joy rather than a burden.‎ G. A little time planning ahead can save a lot of work later on.‎ ‎ ‎ 第三部分 语言知识及应用(共两节,满分45分)‎ 第一节 完形填空 (共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分)‎ 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项(A、B、C、D)中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。‎ A man wanted to study medicine but couldn’t make up his mind. I didn’t know you were coming to this school.‎ M: Yeah, what a coincidence! It’s good to see you. So where are you going now?‎ W: I’m going to the registration building to see if I can drop one of my classes.‎ M: Don’t you like it?‎ W: It’s a boring class, and I am getting nothing out of it. Most of the students in that class cannot help falling asleep in class. So where are you off to?‎ M: I finished class for today, so I am going skating with some of my classmates. They are waiting for me at the south gate.‎ W: I like skating, too. May I join you next time?‎ M: Sure. I will give you a call the next time we go skating.‎ Text 2‎ M: Hello! Can I speak to Susan Brown?‎ W: This is Susan. May I ask who is calling?‎ M: This is Ram Smith from Accel Computers. You have been short listed for the first round of interviews. I need to get some more information from you.‎ W:Oh, sure. Mr. Smith. Please go ahead.‎ M: I see here that you completed your MBA with high honors. Why did you apply for this job?‎ W: Accel Computers is one of the best providers of computer education. I believe it is the best place for me to start a career.‎ M: I see. But with your educational background, you can easily find a job in a better company abroad. How long do you plan to work with us?‎ W: Actually I am not interested in working abroad. My parents are quite old now, and I don’t want to move far away from them. I want to spend more time with them.‎ M: I see—that’s good. When could you be ready for work?‎ W: Anytime next week.‎ M: Great. I will get back to you in a couple of days by email.‎ W: OK, sir, and thank you for your time.‎ Text 3‎ W:Steve. Is that you? I almost didn’t recognize you. Look at you!‎ M: I know. I have put on twenty pounds in the past years. It’s hard to believe, right?‎ W: Well, yeah. What did you do to gain so much weight within a year?‎ M: Well, Tina and I broke up one year ago. She used to cook for me and what I ate was very healthy. But since she left me, I’ve been eating junk food all the time. I also stopped going to the gym.‎ W: I am so sorry to hear that. Why did you break up with Tina?‎ M: It was my fault. I hung out too much with my other friends, got drunk in bars, things like that. I was stupid. I should have spent more time with her instead. I really broke her heart. So how have you been? Oh, look at that ring. You are married!‎ W: Yes, in May. We had wedding in Britain. I’m so glad I’ve found Peter.‎ M: You’re lucky.‎ W: Steve, why don’t you pull yourself together? If you try, I’m sure you can win Tina back. I think you should start by losing some weight. You can’t show up in front of her looking like that.‎ M: I know. I’ll go to the gym and start working out.‎ 第二部分 Text 4‎ Amelia Earhart was a pioneer for women pilots. She bought her first plane in 1922. In May of 1932, she became the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean all by herself. The trip took 14 hours, 56 minutes, and set a new world record.‎ On July 2, 1937. Earhart set out to fly around the world with her partner Frederick Noonan. However, they disappeared on their way to Howland Island, a small island in the Pacific Ocean. The US Navy searched for them, but they were never found.‎ But now, a team of historians, scientists and rescuers are planning to search for the wreckage of the great female pilot’s plane. They want to search for it in the waters off a faraway island in the western Pacific Ocean. They thing the plane’s wreckage may be found in the deep waters nearby.‎ So why do the aircraft recovery group want to search for the plane again? That’s because they have taken a new look at an old photo of the island. They think their new discovery can help lead to the spot where the plane crashed.‎ 第一节:听力理解的问题:‎ ‎1.
