Three high students become heroes after their act of saving a baby’s life.
Andrew Willis, 15, his brother Chris, 13, and friend Reece Galea, 14, were walking along Swallow Drive on their way to school on May 23, when Nicholle Price ran out of her house, shouting for help. Her six-month-old son Corey had swallowed an earring and the young mother couldn’t ring for help because something was wrong with her phone. The three teenagers rushed to the aid of Ms Price, called an ambulance , calmed her down and waited with her until the ambulance arrived before heading to school.
Ms Price, Corey and his grandmother Joyce Finnie visited the school last Thursday to thank the boys for their kind action. “It’s good to know that there are still some good people who will stop and help,” Ms Price said. “While I was shouting for help, a woman walking her dog went straight past, without stopping. I don’t know what would have happened if these boys had not stopped.”
The teenagers were shocked at the attention they received at school for their heroic act but admitted that the incident was nerve-racking(刺激神经的). “We heard her shouting so we knew something wasn’t right,” Andrew said. “We thought someone had died. It was scary but we just did what we had to do.”
Just as proud as the boys’ parents is their principal, Tim McCallum.
After two days in hospital, Corey has now fully recovered. “He’s got two new teeth to show,” Ms Price said. “I have to keep a closer eye on him. He’s into everything now and grabs whatever he
finds to put it straight into his mouth.”

D. they were proud of the attention they received at school for their heroic deed
23. Which would be the best title for this passage?
A. How a baby was saved after swallowing an earring
B. Why the mother shouted for help
C. Baby life saved: teenage heroes earn high praise
D. A mother came to school to thank 3 teenagers

舒中高一统考英语 第3页(共10页)
Studies show that children who eat breakfast do better in school. It doesn’t take much further thought to know that adults will feel better and do better at work as well. Whether you work at home, on the farm, at the office, at school, or on the road, it is not a good idea to have no breakfast.
If we have no breakfast, we are likely to become tired when our brains and bodies run low on fuel (食物). By mid-morning, a lot of us grab a cup of coffee or eat a sugary candy bar to wake up again. This might work for a few minutes, but by lunch time we are hungry. Eating a good breakfast sets the tone for the rest of the day.
Having no breakfast is a popular way to lose weight, but not a smart one. Many people believe that they will lose weight if they have no meals, but that just isn’t true; the body expects to be refueled a few times a day, starting with a healthy breakfast. Eating breakfast is good for losing weight. In fact, people who eat breakfast are more likely to keep a healthy weight.
A healthy breakfast should have some protein (蛋白质) and some fiber (纤维). Protein can come from low fat meats, eggs, or beans. Fiber can be found in whole grains, vegetables and fruits. A good example of a healthy breakfast might be something simple like a hard boiled egg, an orange,
and a bowl of whole grain cereal with low fat milk. Stay away from sugary foods and white bread because they are digested (消化) quickly and will leave you hungry and tired in several hours. Protein and fiber will keep you feeling full until lunch time.
24. The first paragraph mainly tells us that ______.
A. it is necessary to have a good breakfast every day
B. many adults are too busy to have breakfast every day
C. many adults go to work without having breakfast
D. many children go to school without breakfast
25. According to the passage, we feel tired at work probably because ______.
A. we need to have a cup of coffee B. we don’t have a good breakfast
C. our brains don’t work any longer D. we don’t have enough sleep at night
26. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Having a good breakfast can help you to finish your work.
B. Eating a good breakfast is enough for the whole day.
C. Breakfast is really the most important meal in a day.
D. You will be happier if you have a good breakfast.
27. We can learn from the last paragraph that ______.
A. it is healthy only to have beans and eggs for your breakfast
B. you mustn’t have meat for your breakfast
C. you should eat sugary foods if you feel hungry
D. you should eat something which has protein and fiber for breakfast
C
The ninth week of SEAL (Sea, Air, Land) training is referred to as Hell Week. It is six days of no sleep, physical and mental suffering and one special day at the Mud Flats (泥沼) where you will sink into the mud.
It is on Wednesday of Hell Week that we came down to the mud flats and spend the next 15 hours keeping alive in the freezing-cold mud, the cold wind and the strong pressure from the instructors to give up.
As the sun began to set that Wednesday evening, my training class, having broken some of the
rules, was ordered into the mud. We sank into the mud until only our heads could be seen. The instructors told us we could leave the mud if only five men would give up — just five men and we could get out of the cold.
Looking around the mud flat, it was clear that some of us were about to give up. It was still over eight hours till the sun came up—eight more hours of coldness. Our cries were so loud that it was hard to hear anything. And then, one voice began to fly through the night—one voice raised in song.
The song sounded terrible, but it was sung with great power. One voice became two, and two became three, and before long everyone in the class was singing.
We knew that if one man could rise above the suffering then others could as well. The instructors warned us of more time in the mud if we kept up the singing—but the singing went on and on. And somehow, the mud seemed a little warmer, the wind a little weaker and the morning not so far away.
If I have learned anything in my time traveling the world, it is the power of hope. The power can change the world by giving people hope.
So, if you want to change the world, start singing when you’re up to your neck in mud.
28. What did the writer experience during Hell Week?
A. He suffered sleeplessness for one day. B. He was physically and mentally crazy.
C. He went through some hard tests. D. He sank into the mud for the week.
29. Why did the class have the experience at the Mud Flat?
A. Because they wanted to break the rules. B. Because the weather was terribly bad.
C. Because the instructors were strict with them. D. Because it was one of the training courses.
30. What did the class do when they were in the mud?
A. Five of them gave up. B. Everybody joined in the singing.
C. They cried all the time. D. Someone sang from the beginning.
31. What does the writer want to tell us?
A. Singing helps change the world. B. Singing solves problems in life.
C. Hope helps pull through difficulties. D. People should help each other.

Gateway Academy Pre-Sessional Courses(预修课程)
Our pre-sessional courses are ideal for students who have a conditional place at a British university, but who need to achieve a certain level of English in order to be accepted. The course aims to provide students with the English language and study skills that they need in order to be successful at university or another academic establishment. It is important to note that completion of the course does not guarantee students’ entrance into a university. It is necessary for students to show during the course that they have understood the information and skills that they have been taught, and can apply them to their work.
Pre-sessional students at Gateway Academy will benefit from:
● Small class sizes (no more than 10 students per class)
● Twenty three hours of tuition per week
● Individual support and tutorials
● Regular guest lecturers
● The use of the Academy’s study and recreational facilities, including the Language Library, the computer suite, and the academy’s sports facilities.
● A varied social programme including evening entertainments and weekend excursions to popular tourist attractions and cities such as Stonehenge, Oxford and Stratford-on-Avon.
The course offers an all-around approach to learning, and covers reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. During the course, students will receive instruction on important techniques such as summary-writing, analyzing essay titles, organizing writing, note-taking in lectures, giving seminars and making presentations. Students will gain experience in working both individually and in groups. As part of the course, all students will work towards a 5000-word project in their own field of study. Students will receive guidance from their tutors on how best to conduct research and write it up effectively. Students will also work towards a presentation on the same subject.
There is no final examination. The attendance, successful completion of assignments and participation in class will be taken into account. Students will be given a full report on their progress at the end of the course. Students need to be aware that the course involves a great deal of coursework, which will require students to manage their time effectively.
32. From the passage we can learn that ________.
A. the course is suitable for students of all levels
B. the course will ensure your success at university
C. you can’t go to university without taking the course
D. the course emphasizes the application of skills

第二节 (共5小题:每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Doctors say anger can be an extremely damaging emotion, unless you learn how to deal with it. They warn that anger can lead to heart disease, stomach problems, headaches, emotional problems and possibly cancer.
36 Some people express anger openly in a calm reasonable way. Others burst with anger, and scream and yell. But other people keep their anger inside. They can not or will not express it. This is called repressing anger.
For years many doctors thought that repressing anger was more dangerous to a person’s health than expressing it. They said that when a person is angry, the brain releases the same hormones . They speed the heart rate, raise blood pressure, or sugar into the blood, etc. 37
Some doctors say that both repressing and expressing anger can be dangerous. They believe that those who express anger violently may be more likely to develop heart disease, and they believe that those who keep anger inside may face a greater danger of high blood pressure.
38 They say the first step is to admit that you are angry and to recognize the real cause of the anger, then decide if the cause is serious enough to get angry about. If it is, they say, “ 39 Wait until your anger has cooled down and you are able to express yourself calmly and reasonably.”
Doctors say that a good way to deal with anger is to find humor in the situation that has made you angry. 40
A. In general , the person feels excited and ready to act.
B. They said that laughter is much healthier than anger.
C. Expressing anger violently is more harmful than repressing it.
D. Anger may cause you a cancer.
E. Do not express your anger while angry.
F. Anger is a normal emotion that we all feel from time to time.
G. Doctors say the solution is learning how to deal with anger.

A Possible Version:
Dear Cindy,
I am writing to share with you the social activity organized by our school last Saturday.
In order to show our care about the elderly and learn more about the society, the students went to the nursing home. After we got there, we were divided into different groups. Some of us did cleaning for the elderly, and some others talked with them. My group members sang and danced for the old people, who were very happy to watch our performance. This is a really wonderful experience for me, from which I learned that I should respect and spend more time with my grandparents to make them happy. Do you have such kind of activities? Tell me about that if you do.
Looking forward to hearing from you.

Text 3

Text 6
M: Mom, this is going to take forever! Animal World will be on in 20 minutes. It’s my favorite program. You know I can’t miss it!

W: I’ve been trying for months, and it’s always out. There are over 50 students in the course, and every single one wants the book.

M: We’ll leave Boston on June 20th, stay in St. Louis, Missouri for a week, and then fly to your city. We’d probably stay for five days with you and come back, for it’s a two-week vacation.
W: Is there anything special you’d like to do here?
M: We’d love to explore Beale Street, the official home of the blues, where we’d listen to live music. We’d also like to visit Graceland, the popular museum in memory of Elvis Presley. But above all, we want to spend some time with you and your family.
W: Of course! It’s been ages since we met last time. Let’s have a dinner party in my garden.
M: Lovely! Oh, could you find for us a hotel near where you live? It doesn’t have to be big, but I can’t stand noise at bedtime.
W: Sure.
M: Thank you. See you soon.
Text 10
M: Hello, everyone. My name is John. I’m the teaching assistant for this lab session. Let me explain a little about it. As you may know already, it’s a required meeting once a week. I expect you to do all the experiments and keep the results in your lab notebook. I’ll collect the notebooks every two weeks. You’ll be graded on lab notebooks and quizzes. But the most important information I want to give you now is about safety. First of all, you must wear shoes that cover your feet in the lab. Tennis shoes are OK. Also, don’t wear loose clothes, long scarves, big necklaces, or loose belts — they get caught in something or fall into liquid. Another thing to do for safety is cleaning up. Be sure to put the waste in the correct containers. We can’t mix liquid with paper. This is extremely important. I don’t want any fires in this room. You are responsible for washing out your own lab equipment and putting it away. If you don’t do this, I will take away points from your grade. Nobody’s going to clean up after you. OK, any questions?
