It’s the last year of high school, and young minds are turning their attention to the thought of leaving home. This seems a natural progression(自然过渡): parents have children; raise children; children graduate from high school and flee far from parents, returning on weekends to eat home-cooked meals. But what happens when a child loses home right before leaving?
My family has lived in my home since I was two years old. Seventeen years later, as I got ready to leave for university, my parents decided that it was time to move. And naturally, I panicked. This was the place I used to run around with friends; where I got sunburned, chasing ants with sidewalk chalk; where I would sit for hours staring out, making up songs about the passers-by. If we were to move, the new house wouldn’t be my home at all, just a strange, new place. After all, I’d be moving out to go to university. But something still wasn’t quite right.
And then it hit me: this is what the move was really about. I wasn’t concerned with losing my childhood bedroom. What was bothering me was that I’d soon be completely responsible for myself.
When I do go to university, I’ll go without a safe place to come home to. Of course I’ll have my family’s love and support, but I’ll never be able to go home again.
As graduating high-school students, we’re all in love with the idea of going away and having wild adventures if we always have someplace to return to. Leaving the family home behind is really just growing up without a safety net. The move from one place in life to another is an important change. Because it’s true, you can never go home. Not really, however. Once you’ve had an adventure or two, you will still have a nice place to come back to for a nice visit.
35. How long has the writer’s family lived in their present home?
A. 2 years. B. 15 years. C. 17 years. D. 19 years.
36. What was the real reason for the writer’s unwillingness to move?
A. He treasured good memories of his childhood.
B. He was afraid of taking responsibility as an adult.
C. He was worried about losing his childhood bedroom.
D. He liked to sit and enjoy the views outside the house.
37. According to the last paragraph, how does the writer feel about returning home?
A. Thankful. B. Impatient.
C. Overjoyed. D. Nervous.
38. What is the best title for this passage?
A. Growing Up B. Leaving Home
C. Graduation Panic D. Childhood Memories

Tourists can now come face-to-face with huge saltwater crocodiles(鳄鱼) as they swim underwater in the glass-lined “Cage of Death”, an attraction now offered at Northern Australia's Crocosaurus Cove.
For the attraction, brave visitors enter a transparent box that is 9 feet tall but only 1.5 inches thick. The cage is lowered into the underwater place where four crocodiles live, allowing visitors to see very closely and play with various crocodiles-including one who starred as a beast in the well-known movie “Crocodile Dundee”.
Although the experience only lasts about 15 minutes, guests have to accept an instruction in safety before entering the cage.
“I dive with sharks but it's not this close. It's extremely exciting to get that close to a crocodile of that size,” one adventurer told us excitedly as soon as he got out of the “Cage of Death”.
“The cage has no bars, unlike cages used in shark dives, which prevents the beasts from attacking people but deep teeth scratches (划痕) can be seen everywhere on the sides, frightening a lot of visitors who consider taking part,” reports the manager.
Saltwater crocodiles, known locally in Australia as “salties”, are among the largest crocodile species in the world. The males can grow nearly 20 feet long and have been known to weigh over 2, 200 pounds.
An on-site photographer will catch what goes down on film so that tourists can remember the adrenaline (肾上腺素) rush moment through photos-if they choose to pay an additional fee for the keepsakes (纪念品).
The “Cage of Death” experience itself costs $120 per person, in addition to entry to Crocosaurus Cove, which is $28. If you and a friend want to experience the exciting adventure, both of you can enter the cage together and have a close contact with those thrilling crocodiles for $160.
39. The underlined word "transparent" in Paragraph 2 probably means ___________.
A. thick B. useless C. clear D. safe
40. According to the passage, we can infer that ___________.
A. a safety instruction is a must for all visitors
B. visitors can see and touch various crocodiles
C. the cage has to be lowered underwater for half an hour
D. people can be much closer to the sharks than to the crocodiles
41. What can we learn from the manager’s words?
A. The cage is a little dangerous for visitors because there are no bars.
B. People in the cages with bars are often attacked by sharks in the dives.
C. The crocodiles usually hit the cage with their teeth as a result of hunger.
D. Some visitors are frightened when seeing deep teeth scratchers on the sides.
42. How much will it cost if you and your classmate visit Crocosaurus Cove and enter the cage?
A. $148. B. $160. C. $188. D. $216.
D
Bottled water has become the choice for people who are healthy and thirsty. Bottled water is all over the world. But some say the planet’s health and people’s health may be suffering from it.
The idea that bottled water is safer for humans may not be true. The Natural Resources Defense Council of America said, “There is no promise that because water comes out of a bottle, it is cleaner or safer than water from the tap.” Another New York City-based action group added that some bottled water is “really just tap water in a bottle—sometimes more clean, sometimes not.”
It is not proven that bottled water is better than tap water. Nick Reeves from the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management said, “The high mineral content (含量) of some bottled water makes them not good for feeding babies and young children.” Also, most bottled water doesn’t have fluoride (氟化物), which can make teeth stronger. Kids are drinking more bottled water and less fluoridated tap water, and some say that’s behind the recent rise in bad teeth.
Storing is another problem. Placed near heat, the plastic bottles can produce bad chemicals into the water.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency, some 2.7 million tons of plastic are used worldwide to bottle water each year. The plastic can take between 400 and 1,000 years to break down.
In terms of energy use, plastic bottles are also not cheap. One report said that if water and soft drink bottlers had used 10 percent recycled materials in their plastic bottles, they would have saved about 72 million gallons of gas.
So, if you are worried about the effect of bottled water on the Earth, you can take the following steps.
● Drink from your tap. Unless your government warns against this, it should be fine.
● Get a container (容器). Carry your tap water in a steel or a lined drinking container, and clean it between uses.
● Keep it cool. Don’t drink from a bottle that has been sitting in the sun, don’t store it near chemicals, and don’t reuse plastic bottles.
● Choose glass containers over plastic if possible. When finished, recycle!
43. What is the main idea of the article?
A. Drinking tap water is the only choice for people.
B. Glass containers are better than plastic bottles.
C. Plastic bottles are harmful to the environment.
D. Bottled water may not be as good as we think.
44. What can we learn about plastic bottles from the article?
A. They break down in less than 300 years. B. They can be used for many other things.
C. They are a risk to the environment. D. They are cheap to make.
45. According to the article, we can know that bottled water is __________.
A. no problem for the environment B. more expensive than tap water
C. always safer than tap water D. better for babies

Beat Summer Learning Loss
Summer learning loss is a loss of knowledge and skills most commonly due to long breaks during the summertime. Many teachers have certainly had the experience of taking the first month of school not only to introduce his or her rules to the class but also to get the kids back “up to speed” with thinking, remembering what they’ve learned and in many cases, reviewing previous lessons. 46
(1) Read!
Research supports the relationship between independent reading and student achievement, so simply having children read daily will make a positive difference. 47 There are various public libraries, local bookstores and online stores.
(2) Write!
Have children write letters to out-of-town friends and family, or write postcards while on vacation. 48 For children who are good at drawing or painting, parents may choose to create a family scrapbook(剪贴簿) with words printed below pictures. Not only will parents keep this summer’s memories, but children will also continue to practice his or her writing skills!
(3) 49
Think of ways children can use math skills in daily activities: have a yard sale, and put children in charge of the cash box; help younger ones organize an orange juice stand (to practice salesmanship and making change). Or simply buy a set of inexpensive flash cards to practice basic facts while waiting in line or on a long car ride.
(4) “Homeschool” Children.
Keeping children’s skills fresh doesn’t have to cost a fortune: check out some workbooks and online resources, and children can work through several exercises each day. Even as little as twenty minutes a day can have amazing results. 50 For instance, children can learn something during a car ride, right before bedtime, etc.
Of course, parents don’t need to do all the steps here. Just following through with one or two of
these ways will be of great help.
A. Do the math!
B. Have a yard sale!
C. A summer journal is another way to set down summer activities.
D. What’s more, it’s easy to work in a small block of time here and there.
E. Check out the following sources to find books that your child will want to dive into.
F. So it’s not a good choice for parents to force children to spend their summertime learning knowledge.
G. Fortunately, there are some steps parents can try to help children both enjoy the summer and keep their skills fresh.

According to Alibaba Group, the goods that is sold are worth more than 168.2billion yuan on the Double 11 Online Shopping Carnival of 2017.
As an online shopping lover, I’m always certain that people prefer going shopping online because of the following advantages. For one thing, there is no need to go out. Just click the mouse, and you’ll buy whatever you want, which is very convenient. For another, there are a wide variety of goods for us to choose from. Besides these, goods online are cheaper than those in the real stores. As a result, buyers can save a lot of money.
Although I’m crazy about online shopping, I know every coin has two faces. I think we
shouldn’t be addicted to it.

W: You were not so eager about Mahjong before.
M: That’s because I didn’t know the fun of playing it then. Why is Mahjong such a popular game, do you know?
W: I’ve got no idea. I only know that foreigners are beginning to take an interest in it, besides their old card games.
M: That’s right. Some of them are already experts.
W: Indeed they are. But the trouble about Mahjong is once you’re interested in it, you can’t shed it off.
M: Yes. Once I went crazy over other hobbies such as stamp collecting and reading, but I find them very boring now.
W: I’m sure your former hobbies are more beneficial.
M: I can’t deny that, and I can’t help it, either.
W: The bell’s ringing. That must be our partners.

W: How’s your first day on the job going?
M: Fine.
W: I’m glad to hear that. Tell me, have you ever used a floor-polishing machine before?
M: No, I haven’t. Could you show me how?
W: Certainly. First, spray the wax on the floor.
M: I see.
W: Then, press here to turn the machine on … Okay so far.
M: I follow you.
W: Then, polish the floor with a back-and-forth motion like this. Do you think you’ve got that?
M: Yes, I’m sure I won’t have any trouble.
W: Make sure and let me know if you have any questions.
M: OK. Thanks.
Text 9
M: Is this table on the corner Okay?
W: Sure. We can sit here.
M: Gee. You’ve hardly got anything on your plate.
W: Yeah. I guess I’m just not that hungry.
M: What’s the matter? Aren’t you feeling well?
W: Well, I’ve been really worried. It’s my car. It’s in the shop again.
M: Really? What’s wrong this time?
W: I don’t know exactly. Something’s wrong with the brakes, I think.
M: Well, at least that shouldn’t cost you much to fix. Parts are cheaper for all the American cars like yours. Did the mechanic say how much it would cost?
W: He said he would call me later today about the cost.
M: Watch out he doesn’t try to take advantage of you.
W: What do you mean?
M: Well, some car mechanics, if they think that someone doesn’t know much about cars, they might try to overcharge that person.
W: Maybe so. But I trust this man. He has done some work for me in the past and his prices seemed to be fair.
M: Oh, that’s good to know. Maybe I’ll try using him in the future. By the way, do you need a ride home after class today?
Text 10
W: Mary, I usually miss very important dates and feel confused. Have you ever forgotten an appointment at the doctor’s or been late in getting to your part-time job?
