How do you measure a chicken’s happiness? Is it in the way it runs for food? Or
by how much time it spends cleaning itself? To find the answers to these questions, researchers in Canada are putting 16 kinds of chickens through a series of physical and mental tests.
They're watching how well the birds can climb over a barrier for food, how nervous they appear to be and whether they play with a fake worm. Chickens can't say how they feel, but researchers believe that playing with the worm might be a sign of happiness.
Stephanie Torrey is, one of the researchers. Torrey said the animal welfare world wants to do more than just reduce suffering. Now, researchers aim to learn if and how animals can really enjoy their lives.
Supporters of animal welfare say today's chickens are unusually huge and in great pain. They say the industry needs to change breeds (品种).Many in the chicken industry say there is no problem. They say that broiler chickens—the most commonly used bird—may not move around a lot because they don ’ t have a lot of energy. Even if the industry agreed to change breeds, it's unclear what the new birds should look like.
John Glisson of the US Poultry and Egg Association says broiler chickens are especially inactive by nature. Some people may mistake the birds’ inactivity for a medical problem. The industry says changing chicken breeds is unnecessary, and that changing to broiler chickens that don't grow as big or as fast would mean using up more water and other resources. Chicken prices at food stores would be higher, too.
“ It's crazy for anyone to have to remind the industry that birds naturally walk, ” said Josh Balk, the Humane Society ’ s vice president of farm animal protection. He said the study in Canada will provide important information on what breeds of chickens might suffer less.
28. Why does the author raise the questions in the first paragraph?
A. To express his doubts about them.
B. To introduce points for research.
C. To compare various ideas about them.
D. To summarize the research in Canada.
29. According to researchers, chickens may be happy if they .
A. play with fake worms
B. seem not to be nervous
C.climb over a barrier for food
D. pass mental tests successfully
30. People’s opinions on chicken breeds can be best described as .
A.ambiguous B.arbitraryC.conservative D.controversial
31. What result may switching to broiler chickens bring about?
A.Chicken quality may be decreased.
B. Chicken supply may not be abundant.
C.Chickens may become more inactive.
D.Chicken may become more expensive.

You can relax if remembering everything isn't your strong suit. Recent research makes the case that being forgetful can be a strength—in fact, selective memory can even be a sign of stronger intelligence.
Traditional research on memory has focused on the advantages of remembering everything. But looking through years of recent memory data, researchers found that the neurobiology of forgetting can be just as important to our decision-making as what our minds choose to remember.
Making intelligent decisions doesn't mean you need to have all the information at hand. It just means youneed to hold onto the most valuable information. And that means clearing upspace in your memory palace for themostup-to-date information on clients and situations. Our brains do this by creating newneurons(神经元)inourhippocampus, which have the power to overwrite(重写)existing memories that are influencing our decision-making.
If you want to increase the number of new neurons in our brain ’ s learning region, try exercising. Some aerobic exercise like jogging, power walking and swimming has been found to increase the number of neurons making important connections in our brains.
When we forget the names of certain clients or details about old jobs, the brain is making a choice that these details don't matter. Although too much forgetfulness can be a cause for concern, the occasional lost detail can be a sign of a perfectly healthy memory system. The researchers found that our brains facilitate decision-making by stopping us from focusing too much on unimportant past details. Instead, the brain helps us remember the most important part of a conversation.
We can get blamed for being absent-minded when we forget past events in perfect detail. These findings show us that total recall(记忆)can be overvalued. Our brains are working smarter when they aim to remember the right stories, not every story.
32.How can we help our brains produce more neurons? '
A. By having deep sleep frequently.
B. By practicing swimming regularly.
C. By doing mental labor repeatedly.
D. By learning new skills constantly.
33. Which of the following can best replace “facilitate” underlined in paragraph 5?
A. postpone B. repeat C. promote D. abuse
34. What conclusion can be drawn from the text?
A. Memory loss is well worth noticing.
B. Decisions can’t be made without memories.
C. We shouldn't stress total recall too much.
D. Forgetting is even more important than remembering.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Caution:do remember to forget
B. Why and how people choose to forget
C.Want to become smarter? Learn to forget
D. Being forgetful might mean you are smarter
