After I made it to the city center, I started to feel it might be easy for a foreigner to deal with the great size of Beijing. With growing confidence, I decided to take the subway to the hotel, not realizing that the network didn’t go that far. Impressed with the cleanliness of the station, I bought a ticket and boarded the first train that came along.
After a few minutes I asked a young man seated next to me where I should get off closest to the Friendship Hotel. Wearing a smart business suit and tie, he would surely speak English, wouldn’t he? Unfortunately, he couldn’t understand me but seemed very friendly. I showed him the room card with all the information of the Friendship Hotel in Chinese characters. He looked at it, and then his eyes moved quickly to the carriage subway map. Next, he raised three fingers of his right hand.
In Australia, raising fingers at someone is not usually nice, but this man was smiling. At the next station he showed me two fingers. In Australia, that’s really rude, but I got the message. When we stopped at the third station, he didn’t just point to the door, but got up, took me out of the train, and led me to the top of the stairs, and out onto the street. Then he stopped a taxi and told the driver where to take me.
All this came from a man who couldn’t speak my language, and I couldn’t speak his. I was now speechless, especially when he refused my offer of money. I felt a little embarrassed about having even thought he would accept a tip.
This experience made it clear I had to learn some Chinese quickly or my adventures might start turning into bad luck.

A. prove the importance of being careful
B. appreciate the kindness of the young man
C. complain some cultural misunderstanding
D. describe one of his adventurous experiences

Who is your role model? Normally the answer to this question would be anyone around you who you find truly inspiring. It could also be someone like J. K. Rowling or Martin Luther King Jr who has proven to be a strong and intelligent person.
However, in today’s world, stars are regarded as role models along with the heroes listed above, despite their intentions or actions. Teens attempt to imitate their actions for two major reasons. First, to be fashionable and be accepted by popular culture. Second, stars’ actions are so well recorded by the media that it seems to grab teens’ attention easily. Many of the reports about stars are shocking and exhibit bad morals(道德)or lifestyles that aren’t right for teenagers. In addition, almost everything stars do is described beyond truth to make a shocking story by taking it to the next level.
However, teens must take responsibility for their actions. We can’t always blame stars for influencing them. Only teens have control over themselves and only they choose to do something. Their bodies and actions are in the hands of no one else.
Whether stars choose to be or not, they set examples as soon as they step into the spotlight. With reporters following and recording every move they make, it is impossible not to be watched and then be imitated. These people influence teens whether they want to or not. So, should teens look up to them or the people who are true and good role models? It’s teens’ responsibility to tell right from wrong, and it’s time for them to take responsibility for their actions. In doing so, they will lean towards those inspiring people and follow in their footsteps.
28. The teens like to imitate stars in order to________.
A. know more about stars’ stories
B. be accepted by the society
C. be reported by the media
D. become more stylish
29. According to the author, the role the media play in setting examples to teens is________.
A. reasonable B. inspiring
C. negative D. positive
30. The author advises the teens to ________.
A. keep a balance between study and entertainment
B. be responsible for their own choices and behaviour
C. follow in fashionable stars' footsteps to be more popular
D. choose their role models through different reports
31. What does the underlined phrase “step into the spotlight” mean in Paragraph 4?
A. Enter a place with a spotlight.
B. Lose interest in the media.
C. Get the attention of the media.
D. React properly to the media.
D
While astronauts in space get to do many exciting things, they miss out on ordinary things that we all take for granted — being able to walk on firm ground, hanging out with family and digging into a slice of hot steaming pizza. Though not much can be done about the first two things, there may soon be a solution to the third one, thanks to the cool 3-D pizza printer!
About a year ago, NASA offered $125,000 to Anjan Contractor, a 3-D technology expert, to build a device that would allow astronauts to make pizza on demand. The mechanical engineer promised that his invention would produce pies in large quantities that looked, tasted and even smelled like pizza made in common ovens.
Late last year, the engineer presented a video of his first prototype(原型)that begins by creating a single slice of dough(面团)that is cooked and printed at the same time. Then comes the tomato “sauce” —a mix of tomato powder, oil and water and finally, a protein slice that looks like cheese. While the video doesn’t show the baking process, the inventor says that once the pizza is printed, it can be ready to be consumed in 7 seconds.
While the pie in the video looks delicious enough to attract any pizza lover, Anjan Contractor is far from ready for astronauts. That’s because he still has to find a solution to make the food container in the printer last for 30 years. Though that may sound unrealistic, actually it is not. Anjan Contractor believes that the only way that is possible is that the water is removed from all the ingredients and then they are reduced to the powder form. This, as you can imagine, will not be so easy. But, while the printer may not be ready for space, it certainly looks ready enough for people on
earth. Hopefully, NASA and Contractor will consider selling it to those not fortunate enough to go to Mars!
32. Why does the author mention the things that astronauts in space cannot do?
A.To ask us not to take common things for granted.
B.To show they live a difficult life there.
C.To show their life is boring in space.
D.To introduce the topic of the text.
33. NASA offered $125,000 to Anjan Contractor mainly to __________.
A.create some new type of 3-D printer
B.attract more companies to work for NASA
C.help astronauts in space enjoy fresh pizza one day
D.produce pizza in large quantities to earn great profits
34. The biggest challenge that Anjan Contractor is faced with now is probably that __________.
A.he cannot make the food container last for three decades
B.the pizza doesn’t seem attractive to pizza lovers
C.he has no way to make pizza that can last for thirty years
D.he has no money left to go on with his research
35. What’s the best title of the passage?
A.NASA is trying its best to help astronauts eat better
B.Astronauts may be able to enjoy steaming hot pizza in space
C.NASA is working on making pizza for common people
D.A 3-D pizza printer has been used to make pizza

We often focus on building relationships with others, but we forget the essential first step: being friends of ourselves. 36 How can we have good relationships with others if we don’t even have good relationships with ourselves?
The problem might be worse than we expect. Maybe we don’t like ourselves without realizing it. Here is a simple checklist: Is there anything you don’t like about yourself from these lists?
Your past: Maybe you have made mistakes in the past which you feel bad about. 37 Even if that happened in distant past, your subconscious mind still has a reason not to like yourself.
Your background: You might wish that you were born in a different family, or that you have different background. 38 They seem to get whatever they want effortlessly because of their background.
Your personal character traits: You might have some personality traits that you don’t like. For example, you may be an introvert(内向的人) and you don’t like it; you wish you were an extrovert.
Others might have better achievements than you, and no matter how hard you tried, it might seem impossible for you to match them. 39 Is there anything that resonate(产生共鸣) with you? All these give reasons to you not to like yourself. That in turn makes it difficult for you to be a good friend to yourself.
40 Here are some tips:
· Forgive yourself.
· Accept things you can’t change.
· Focus on your strengths.
· Write your success stories.
· Stop comparing yourself with others.
· Always be true to yourself.
A. You might be disappointed with yourself on why you make such mistakes.
B. You might then think that it’s because you are not smart enough or don’t have enough talents.
C. You can do something to improve the relationships with others.
D. Fortunately, there are always things you can do to fix the situation.
E. That is an important step if we are to have good relationships with others.
F. Sometimes you might not believe yourself.
G. Maybe you could not accept the fact that you are not as lucky as others.
