She had parked them in a dance class, but they’d fled o ut to find her. She wrapped up her remarks and canceled the Q&A. “I was trying to please everyone but pleasing no-one,” she says, “I had to rethink the way I made my decisions.” ‎ Author of the bestselling Winning (written with husband Jack Welch, former head of GE), Suzy Welch, 49, has a new book, 10-10-10, that details the strategy(策略) she created after the big decision-making moment. The mother of four explains: “When faced with a vital decision, ask yourself, how will my choice affect my life ten minutes from now? Ten months from now? Ten years from now? ‎ ‎“Too often we decide something by avoiding the immediate ouch. But by looking at the middle and longer time frames(框架) as well as the short-term, we’re accessing our real values. My business trip is an example. Had I applied the strategy to it back then, I would have declined it. I had other work travel coming up. I was needed at home. ‎ ‎“Many people have found ‘10-10-10’ thrilling. A businessman moved forward with a new business plan but without the girlfriend, who didn’t share his goals. A mum of a troubled teen finally got him to a psychologist after putting it off. Often, in our most stressful moments, we make decisions by instinct (本能)only. Or we ask a friend for advice. Or we make no decision and suffer for it. We can live much more deliberately by taking control of choices and really understanding them.‎ ‎“Sure, there’s still room for spontaneity(自发的行为). But when you look at things from three evident time frames and assess the consequences, never again will you say, ‘I have no idea why I made this decision.’” ‎ ‎1. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage? ‎ A. Suzy and her husband used to work in GE, and they achieved great success in business. ‎ B. Suzy and her husband had four children. ‎ C. Suzy believed that many people reached a decision by avoiding direct pains. ‎ D. Suzy failed to give up her work travel because she hadn’t had her great strategies then. ‎ ‎2. Which of the following is probably one of the strategies in Suzy’s book? ‎ A. When doing business, you should learn to please everyone. ‎ B. Before making a vital decision, you should ask yourself instead of others. ‎ C. When carrying out a new plan, you’d better take your girlfriend. ‎ D. The assessment of consequences plays a vital role in decision-making. ‎ ‎3. Suzy’s new book was mainly about _______. ‎ A. how to deal with numbers when doing business ‎ B. how to make decisions by following her strategies ‎ C. how to obtain more benefits in business ‎ D. how to make detailed strategies in business ‎ B There’s no doubt that our character has a profound effect on our future. What we must remember, however, is not merely how powerful character is in influencing our fate, but how powerful we are in shaping our own character and, therefore, our own fate. Character may determine our fate, but character is not determined by fate.‎ It’s a common mistake to think of character as something that is fully formed and fixed very early in life. It calls to mind old proverbs like “A leopard can’t change its spots” and “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.”‎ This perspective that our character is etched in stone is supported by a great deal of modern psychology emphasizing self-acceptance. As Popeye says, “I am what I am.” The hidden message is: don’t expect me to be more, better, or different.‎ Ultimately, these views of humanity totally undervalue the lifelong potential for growth that comes with the power of reflection and choice.‎ How depressing it would be to believe that we can’t choose to be better, more honest, more respectful, more responsible, and more caring. None of us should give up the personal seeking to improve our character. Not because we’re bad, we don’t have to be sick to get better, but because we’re not as good as we could be.‎ There are so many things in life we can’t control, whether we’re beautiful or smart, whether we had good parents or bad, whether we grew up with firmness or negation. It’s inspiring to remember that nothing but moral will power is needed to make us better.‎ No, it isn’t easy. But if we make a great effort to become more aware of the habits of heart and mind that drive our behavior, we can begin to place new emphasis on our higher values so that we become what we want our children to think we are.‎ ‎4. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 3 mean?‎ ‎ A. is carved in the stone with knives. B. is controlled by oneself. ‎ ‎ C. can be better and different. D. can’t be changed easily. ‎ ‎5. Which of the following would the writer agree with?‎ ‎ A. A leopard can’t change its spots. ‎ B. We must attach importance to self-acceptance.‎ ‎ C. We should value our lifelong potential for growth. ‎ D. We should make choices constantly. ‎ ‎6. What do we need to improve ourselves according to the author?‎ ‎ A. Our smartness. B. Our will power. C. Our fate. D. Our character.‎ ‎7. What is the best title of the passage?‎ ‎ A. Character can be formed and fixed. B. Character determines our fate.‎ ‎ C. We shape our own character. D. Changing our character isn’t easy.‎ C This is a story told or read to children of young ages. The heroine, Cinderella, treated cruelly by her stepmother and her two ugly stepsisters, is helpless until the right magic comes along. She meets her prince and they live together happily.‎ Just a sweet, pretty tale? Not in the view of Ellen Macintosh, who has written much about fairy tales. “Instead of standing up to her cruel stepmother and ‎ stepsisters, Cinderella just waits for a fairy godmother to appear and solve her problem. But would' t you want a daughter of yours to show more spirit?” ‎ The story is long-lasting, whatever its shortcomings, and it doesn’t take much to see its influence on a number of recent Hollywood productions. In these versions for the silver screen, the Cinderella character no longer has to clean the house and has no sisters to make her life terrible, though she keeps the way of not showing much courage. The character of the rich and handsome stranger, however, is kept, and in some cases really is a prince. The role of the fairy godmother is often played by luck; we live in a civilized age when even very young children might reject the idea of fairies. In the majority of film versions, the heroine has a profession and is even permitted to continue working after marrying her prince — this is the twenty first century, after all.‎ Doesn’t the success of these films indicate that the story has relevance(关联) to children even today? “Yes,” answers Ellen, who sees its message as being rooted in a fundamental childhood desire for love and attention. “Most children experience a sense of inner loneliness as they are growing up and empathize with (与…共鸣)the character who faces some sort of challenge. This can be seen in the original story of Cinderella, where the fairy godmother tells the heroine that she must become elegant and confident if she is to go to the ball. She has to grow spiritually, and by maturing, she becomes attractive to the prince, thus ensuring that the ending of the story will be happy.” “In the later versions, thus element (因素)is missing,” says Ellen, “ and the theme of the story is simply that a girl’s role in life is to be more beautiful than other girls so that she can carry off the prize: the handsome prince. Is this really what we want girls to grow up believing?”‎ ‎8. Why does Ellen disapprove of the Cinderella story?‎ A. The plot is too simple. B.The description is not vivid.‎ C. The heroine is not brave enough. D.The story is unfit for the children today.‎ ‎9. In the film versions of the Cinderella story, __________.‎ A. luck plays an important role in the heroine' s happy life ‎ B. Cinderella’s family background remains unchanged C. the heroine becomes a successful career woman ‎ D. the character of the prince is removed.‎ ‎10. According to Even, the film versions of the story ________.‎ A. succeed because of the happy ending ‎ B. ignore the children's psychological need C. deliver a mistake message that beauty is everything D. reflect modem people' s attitude to challenges in life ‎11. What is the purpose of the passage?‎ A.To analyze the characters of the Cinderella story.‎ B.To introduce different versions of the Cinderella story.‎ C.To explain the changes of the Cinderella story over time. ‎ D.To present a different understanding of the Cinderella story.‎ D Sleep is as mysterious as it is important for our health. Over the decades, researchers have put forward several systems through which sleep makes us energetic again, but still don’t fully understand the big picture. Now, two recently published studies come up with an interesting explanation: we sleep to forget some of the things we learn during the day.‎ We store memories in networks in our brains. Whenever we learn something new, we grow new connection between neurons (神经元), called synapses (突触). In 2003, Giulio Tononi and Chiara Girelli, biologists at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, put forward something very interesting: during the day, we learn so much and develop so many synapses that things sometimes get unclear. Since then, the two and their colleagues have made quite a few interesting additions to that study.‎ For starters, they showed that neurons can cut out some synapses, at least in the lab. But they suspected the same things happens every day, naturally, in our brains ---probably during sleep.‎ So they set up a painstaking experiment, in which Luisa de Vivo, an assistant scientist working in their lab, collected 6,920 synapses from mice, both awake and ‎ sleeping. Then, they determined the shape and size of all these synapses, learning that the synapses in sleeping mice were 18 percent smaller than in awake ones. That’s quite a big margin.‎ After this, they designed a memory test for mice. They placed the animals in a room where they would get a mild electrical shock if they walked over one particular section of the floor. They injected some of the mice with a material that had been proved to prevent the cutting of new synapses. The mice that experienced this would more likely forget about the section and after a good night’ sleep, they tended to walk over the section again, while mice that slept normally remembered better.‎ Then, Dr. Tononi and his colleagues found that the cutting didn’t strike every neuron. Some 20% were unchanged, likely well-established memories that shouldn’t be changed.‎ In other words, we sleep to forget --- but in a smart way.‎ ‎12. What did Dr. Tononi find in his early research?‎ A. We store what we learn in synapses.‎ B. We grow new synapses when we sleep.‎ C. Synapses are connections between neurons.‎ D. Some synapses are cut out during sleep.‎ ‎13. What may the underlined word “margin” in Paragraph 3 mean?‎ A. Mistake. B. Number. C. Difference. D. Surprise.‎ ‎14. Why did the injected mice go to the electric section again?‎ A. They didn’t sleep well and forgot about it.‎ B. Their neurons didn’t cut the new synapses.‎ C. The injected material cut their memory of it.‎ D. Their synapses are too small to remember it.‎ ‎15. What’s the text mainly about?‎ A. An interesting function of sleep. B. The importance of sleep.‎ C. A memory test for mice. D. Neurons and synapses.‎ 第二节 (共 5 小题, 每小题 1.5分, 满分 7.5 分) ‎ 根据短文内容, 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项, 选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ Master Your Deadlines ‎ ‎ The struggle begins in high school, sometimes earlier. The one most widely accepted today is based on the 1 that drama evolved (演化)from ritual( ‎ 宗教仪式). The argument for this view goes as follows. In the beginning, human beings 2 the natural forces of the world—even the seasonal changes—as unpredictable, and they sought through various means to 3 these unknown and feared powers. Those measures which appeared to 4 the satisfying results were then kept and repeated until they changed into 5 rituals. 6 stories arose which explained or covered up the mysteries of the rituals. As times passed, some rituals were 7 , but the stories, later called myths(神话), continued to exist and provided material for art and drama.‎ Those who believed that drama evolved out of ritual also argue that those rituals contained the 8 of theatre because music, dance, masks, and 9 were almost always used. 10 , a suitable site had to be provided for performances and 11 the entire community did not participate , a(n) 12 division was usually made between the “ area of acting “ and the “ area in which an audience sits ”. According to this view, tales about the hunt, war or other things are told and gradually spread. 19 through the use of action and dialogue by a narrator and then through the assumption of each of the roles by a different person. You may not know that smoking can do terrible damage to your heart and lungs or that it is more difficult for smoking couples to become pregnant. What’s worse, smoking can affect the health of non-smokers. Even your classmates wouldn’t like to make friends with you.‎ Here’s some advice on how to quit smoking. First, be determined. Every time you want to smoke a cigarette, do something else. In fact, do anything to keep your mind and especially yours hands busy. Second, keep trying. Don’t be disappointed if you have to try several times before you stop smoking. If you weaken and have a cigarette, don’t feel ashamed. Just try again. You will succeed eventually.‎ I do hope you will live happily and healthily. ‎ ‎ Yours sincerely,‎ Li Hua 听力录音原稿:‎ Text 1‎ W: I'm calling about my gas bill for last month because there are some charges on there that I’m concerned about. (1)‎ M: I can review it with you. But first, what's your home address and the last name on the account?‎ Text 2‎ W: I see here that a Charlie Westfield has a few late charges. You'll have to pay them before you can sign out another book. ‎ M: You' re probably looking at my son' s account. I’m Carl Westfield. ‎ W: I also have a Charlene Westfield. Her account needs to be updated. (2)‎ Text3‎ W: Look at the big field of cotton! And there's a farm with some beautiful houses.‎ M: We really get to know the country better when we travel by train.(3)‎ Text 4‎ M: I’ve never seen you shout at someone before. (4) Are you all right?‎ W: I'm sorry, but that woman was being so rude! It's been a long day and I'm a little stressed out from work. ‎ Text 5‎ W: The 6: 00. 7: 30 and 8: 00 trains to London still have seats open. Which one would you like?‎ M: I'll take the 6: 00 train. How long will it take to get there?‎ W: Well, it'll take two and a half hours to get to London. (5)‎ Text 6‎ M: You look a little uncomfortable. What's the matter? (6)‎ W: Oh, I just don't eat Thai food very much. (6)(7)‎ M: Would you like me to order you something else, or would you rather go to that new Italian restaurant? (7)‎ W: No, we came here to eat, so let's eat. Maybe I'll just add some soy sauce.‎ M: Really, it's no problem. I don't want you to feel forced into eating something you don’t like.‎ W: It's fine really. I need to try new things. ‎ Text 7‎ W: Hey, Jim? Do you mind if I ask you how long your friend is going to be staying in our apartment? (8)‎ M: He will be here for at least another month, maybe longer. (8) It depends on whether or not he finds a job. ‎ W: OK…well…it's just that he's already been here for two months, and he just sits around here all day and eats all our food. It is OK if it is temporary, but I didn’t know he'd be staying here this long. Maybe he should start contributing for things----like rent, or even groceries. (9)‎ M: I'll talk to him, but I can't make you any promises.‎ Text 8‎ W: I was thinking we could have the King family over for dinner on Friday night. (10) They moved next to the subway station, so they're within driving distance now.‎ M: Yeah, good idea. We haven’t seen them in a while, and they have two kids, just ‎ like we do. (10)‎ W: What should we make for dinner? Maybe something casual and easy, like a barbecue? (10)‎ We can eat out in the backyard and play some games together.‎ M: Sure. I think we have a badminton set in the garage W: Let’s invite the Smiths as well. They’re our neighbors, after all. Jack and Diane go to school with Sophie and Bobby. (10)(11)‎ M: Great. I'll grab some burgers and hot dogs tomorrow after work.‎ W: I guess I’d better start cleaning up around here, then. This place is a mess. (12)‎ Text 9‎ M: Dr. Stone, how did you become an expert on smells?‎ W: Well, when I was in college, there was a course on senses. The other senses seem to be more general somehow, but smell is so personal. (13) I found it extremely interesting. ‎ M: Do you have any interesting information to give us about smells?‎ W: Well, let's see. Did you know that it's harder to forget smells than to forget facts? There have been experiments where people could pick out a particular smell 30 days after smelling it for the first time. (14)‎ M: Really? So, smells can bring back more memories than, say, music? (14)‎ W: That seems to be the case. (14) ‎ M: That's interesting. So, what's your favorite smell?‎ W: Oh, I have a lot of different ones. The smell of the sea reminds me of happy family holidays, (15) and the smell of roses makes me think of my friend's house. Strangely enough, I like the smell of aircraft fuel at airports. I know I'm going to fly somewhere exciting! But it's the general smell of my garden that I really like the most. (16) That means I'm at home where I should be. ‎ Text 10 ‎ Good day, everyone. Now that were all on the boat, (17) I'll give you a brief explanation of today's activities, as well as an introduction to the Great Barrier ‎ Reef itself. As we leave the mainland here, we're going to pass by one of the most fascinating parts of this reef. The beautiful colored plants that you see below you started forming 8000 years ago. They are home to over 2000 species of fish. Green Island is just one of the 900 islands of the Great Barrier Reef, (18) and it is the only one with a rainforest. (19) Sherri is our park guide, and she will take you through the forest and tell you all about the 120 different plant species we have. If you're interested in getting wet, I suggest you follow Damien and Marcus. They’re our diving guides, and they have the most knowledge about life on the island. (20) Anything to do with beer or boats, you can ask me. However, do not go anywhere on your own without informing us first. We wouldn't want anyone to get bitten by a shark or a poisonous spider. Just kidding, mates! ‎
