Two soldiers, hungry and exhausted, came upon a small village. They went from door to door, begging for food. However, the villages, suffering poor harvests and many years of war, gave them none.
Then the first soldier had an idea. He took three round stones and washed them. There was a large iron pot in the village square. He filled the pot with water and built a fire beneath the pot. The villagers first looked out of their windows and them poured out into the square, wondering what was going on. The first soldier announced that he was going to make stone soup to feed them all. He carefully placed the stones into the pot.
The water boiled all afternoon as the soldiers told tales of the lands they had traveled. Finally the first soldier announced that it was time to taste the soup. He took a sip(一小口)and said, “It’s a good soup. But it needs something. Here, you taste this and tell me what it needs.” The soldier looked at the nearest villager who quickly tasted the soup and said,” I think it needs an onion.” “An onion!” said the soldier. “Anyone knows you can’t make soup without an onion.”
One of the children, who knew where an onion was hidden, went and got it. Another hour went by and the soldier tasted the soup again. “What does it need?” he asked a nearby villager, who tasted the soup. The villager replied, “It needs a cabbage.” Soon a villager approached hesitantly(迟疑地), holding a cabbage he’d retrieved, of course, from its hiding place.

Dreams are not just a product of the processing of information that our brain conducts while we sleep. It is from dreams that some of the greatest inventions have become a reality.
Take for example the famous chemist Dmitri Mendeleev, it was in his dream that he figured out how to place all the elements on a periodical table. Srinivasa Ramanujan discovered thousands of mathematical equations(方程式)from his dreams. Rene Descartes, the man who built much of the framework of the modern scientific method mentioned that the basis of the method came to him in a dream.
These are just a few examples of how people got the answers to some of the most complex questions from their dreams. Our subconscious(潜意识的)mind keeps trying to give us answers to
questions we may struggle with, and many of these answers come to us in the form of dreams. However, most of us may struggle with recalling them.
Here is a very simple exercise that can help you recall your dreams. Before going to bed, for at least 24 days (It takes around 24 days to form a habit), keep telling yourself that “I will remember all my dreams”. At first, you may not see any results at all, but don’t be affected by that. Just keep doing it. After some time you will notice that vague(模糊的)memories of your dreams will stay in your mind when you wake up. These may be forgotten after a while, so make a note of it on your mobile phone or in a book.
Now the fun doesn’t just stop there. Try to understand what your dreams mean; see if it applies to something that is happening in your everyday life. Many of the problems we struggle with have already been solved in our amazing mind. It is all locked away in our subconsciousness waiting to be discovered. These answers come to us in the form of dreams.
32. The examples given in Paragraph 2 show that ______.
A. successful people often dream
B. dreams can help solve problems
C. famous people work hard at night
D. great inventions are based on hard work
33. According to the text, most people have trouble ______.
A. realizing their dreams B. continuing their dreams
C. waking from their dreams D. remembering their dreams
34. When you recall a dream, you are advised to ______.
A. forget it B. keep it in mind
C. share it with others D. make a record of it
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Why do People Dream B. Inventions and Inventors
C. The Power of Your Dreams D. How to Remember Dreams

第三节 书面表达(满分15分)
Dear David,
I’m writing to share my good news with you—I’ve won first prize in the National High School English Speaking Contest.
I’d like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to you. In my eyes, you are such a brilliant teacher. Since you taught me, I have been keen on learning English. I spent most of my spare time reading English novels and listening to English programs as you suggested. After I signed up for the contest, it was you who encouraged me and helped me prepare for it. Without you, I wouldn't have stood out among the others in the contest.
Thanks again for your encouragement and efforts.
Yours,
Li Hua
