I’ve always had strong opinions of how love should be expressed. What I remember most about visiting my boyfriend’s parents is the loud tick of the clock as we silently ate our meal. I was quick to regard his family as cold. However, once, when we were about to drive home, my boyfriend’s father appeared and began to wash the windshield(挡风玻璃). I could sense that his dad was a caring man.
I learned another lesson about love later. My father often telephoned me early in the morning. “Buy Xerox. It’s a good share price,” he would say when I answered the phone. My dad offered no pleasant greeting or inquiry(询问)about my life. This angered me and we often quarreled. But one day, I thought about my father’s success and realized his concern for my financial safety showed how much he loved me. The next time he called and told me to buy a stock(股票), I thanked him.
The way I treat my friends is sometimes different from how they treat me. For example I always return phone calls without delay and regularly check in with old friends. I had one friend who rarely called, responding to my messages with short e-mails. “She isn’t a good friend!” I thought. My anger grew as the holidays approached. Then she came to a gathering I hosted and handed me a beautiful dress I had fallen in love with when we last went window-shopping. I was shocked at her kindness, and felt bad for thinking her uncaring. Clearly I needed to change my expectations.
Far too often, I ignore unique expressions, eagerly expecting people to do things my way. This has left me feeling unloved. Over the years, however, I have learned to read others’ love signs better and get along well with them.
21. The writer finally realized that her father _____.
A. wasn’t a pleasant person B. was successful in finance
C. was caring about her D. was dissatisfied with her
22. How many examples has the writer given to show the lessons she has learned on love?
A. Two. B. Three. C. One. D. Four.
23. The writer writes this passage to show that _____.
A. different people have different ways to show their love
B. her good friend dislikes her way to care about others
C. she expects others to care about her in her way
D. people should treat others in a caring way
B
Some people believe Christmas without a Christmas tree isn’t Christmas. I still remember family trips to cut down Christmas trees when I was a kid, and cutting down our own Christmas trees remains an unchanged tradition although I have my own family now. One thing I wanted to know was whether there was a way to make a Christmas tree last longer.
Luckily, right before Christmas in 2010, we learned a way to make a Christmas tree last longer when we visited Karabin Farms, a Christmas tree farm in Southington, Connecticut.
Christmas tree grower Michael Karabin shared the following tip with us as we were returning from the field after cutting down our Christmas tree:
When you bring your Christmas tree home, first boil about 4 litres of water. Then put one cup of sugar in the water and allow the mixture to cool. Make a half-inch cut at the base of the trunk(树干). Put the lower part of the trunk in a container and then pour in the warm sugar water. Continue to add fresh, cool plain water later, always making sure your Christmas tree has an ample supply of water.
We decided to have a try, and one thing I noticed in the first week after we brought our Christmas tree home was that it seemed to have kept its scent(气味) longer than trees we’d cut down in the past. Besides, the tree looked as green as before.
Did this tip from the farmer really make our Christmas tree last longer? Here’s a photo that shows how healthy and green our tree still appeared in January: a full month after we cut it down!

A. Satisfied B. Afraid C. Worried D. Disappointed

Be honest, when was the last time you cried? If you’re one of those who say they never cry, the statistics are against you. Women reportedly cry 64 times a year on average, while men shed(流)tears about 17 times. Everyone from professional athletes such as Michael Jordan to politicians like Barack Obama has been caught crying at least once. But why do we cry?
Some psychologists (心理学家) believe crying is our body’s response when we’re helpless. Even if we’re surprised by happy news, we may still cry. Other psychologists say that when we cry, we’re trying to get others to help us out when we’re surprised, sad, angry, scared, or in danger.
Therapist (临床专家)Judith Kay Nelson says that our experience with crying as babies may determine how we view crying when we’re older. Some parents are quick to try and calm (安抚) their kids down whenever they start crying. Those children will likely find crying in their adult years brings a similar comfort. On the other
hand, those whose parents became angered by their crying probably won’t feel crying has the same calming effect.
Many people believe crying can actually make a person feel better. But according to studies, whether it makes us feel better or not depends on the reactions of others. If others react positively (积极地), we’ll feel better. On the contrary(相反), we’ll feel worse.
People’s reactions to crying have a lot to do with the gender(性别)of the person weeping. In the West, it’s generally acceptable for women to be seen crying. In Britain boys are taught not to cry. Even though people are becoming more enlightened about tears, crying in males is still viewed as a sign of weakness. Philip Hodson, an expert on male emotions (情绪), has a different viewpoint. “In truth, crying isn’t weakness; it’s a relaxation system,” he says. “If we don’t use this system, we’re not being very intelligent.” After all, everybody cries.
29. What can be learned about the act of crying from the statistics?
A. Everyone, regardless of gender, cries. B. Some people never cry.
C. Women often cry for no reason at all. D. Men actually cry more than women.
30. Which is the opinion of therapist Judith Kay Nelson?
A. The act of crying has a calming effect on all of us.
B. Parents shouldn’t rush to calm their baby when it cries.
C. The way we view crying is shaped by our childhood experience.
D. Parents’ responses to a crying baby will determine its personality type.
31. What is said about crying making a person feel better?
A. It is completely false. B. It is dependent on a person’s age.
C. It is true only for men. D. It is influenced by others’ responses.
32. What can we infer about Western cultures from the last paragraph?
A. Only intelligent people can relax by crying.
B. Crying is still less socially acceptable for males than females.
C. Males are now encouraged to express their emotions through crying by their
parents.
D. British people consider it unhealthy to keep feelings bottled up inside.

Companion robots(陪护机器人) are becoming more and more important in offering help to busy people looking after the elderly and children. With an aging population and an increasing labor shortage(短缺), the demand(需求) for companion robots for elder care and children’s companions is on the rise.

Song Chenfeng, founder and CEO of Zaijia, said: "The robot is equipped with a monitoring camera and other hardware for facial and voice recognition.” Family members could also connect their smart phones with the robot . “When the elderly fall or the children cry at home, the robot will send messages to inform other family members," he said. “The companion robot should be an important 'blue sea' in the intelligent household robot market. Xiaoyuzaijia aims at white-collar people who are busy with their work and spend less time accompanying(陪伴) their family members. It builds a bridge among family members and satisfies the emotional communication needs of modern people,” said Song.
Yuan Wenhui, chairman of Zaijia, said the company will offer personalized service in the family health care and children's education , based on big data algorithms(统计), aiming to be a necessary intelligent family housekeeper in the future.

Too many people want others to be their friends, but they don’t give friendship back. 36 To have a friend, you must learn to treat your friend the way you want your friend to treat you. Learning to be a good friend means learning three rules: be honest; be generous; be understanding.
37 Friends must be able to trust one another. If you don’t tell the truth, people usually find out. If a friend finds out that you haven’t been honest, you may lose your friend’s trust. Good friends always count on one another to speak and act honestly.
Generosity means sharing and sharing makes a friendship grow. You don’t have to give your lunch money or your clothes, or enjoy, like our hobbies and your interests. 38 These can be very valuable to a friend. They tell your friend what is important to you. By sharing them you help your friend know you better.
Sooner or later everyone needs understanding and help with a problem. Something may go wrong at school. Talking about the problem can make it easier to solve . Turning
to a friend can be a first step in solving the problem. 39 You must try to put yourself in your friend’s place so you can understand the problem better.
No two friendships are ever exactly alike. 40 If you plan to keep your friendships, you must practice honesty, generosity and understanding.
A. Breakfast money is necessary.
B. Naturally you will want to share your ideas and feelings.
C. That is why some friendships don’t last very long.
D. A friend who gives you his lunch money is a true friend.
E. Honesty is where a good friendship starts.

M: Good. We have 5 weeks to prepare. Here are my suggestions. On the first day, a welcome party. Then they can visit the schools in the district on the second day.
W: We must remember that this group wants to look at how computers are being used in the classroom.
M: Exactly. So I want to ask Mr. Goodman to give them a talk on this on the afternoon of the third day.
W: That will fit.
M: And on the last day, they want to do some touring. We could take them on the tour of London, but many of them may have been there already. And Scotland will be too far away.
W: Why not take them for a walk along the coast? It should be interesting.
M: Good idea, Cathy. I am sure that they will like it.

Many centuries ago all people lived on seeds and plants. They didn’t know how to farm or raise animals for food. Because they used stone tools, we call them the Stone Age people. Now there are some people who still live much like these Stone Age people. They live in the places that are hard to reach. Since they have met few outsiders, they don't know about modern inventions, and they haven't learned the ways of doing things from others. For 25 000 years, such groups of people have lived alone in the middle of Australia. One of the groups is the Kooris. They don't know how to farm, nor do they raise animals. The Kooris spend most of their time searching for food and water. Several Kooris families live together as a group. They have no houses. At night, they sleep around the fires.
