阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D 四个选项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
My dear friend has invited me to speak at a women’s conference she was holding in Honduras.
The night before I was to leave, I decided a warm bath would help me sleep. I twisted the hot water handle on the tub (浴缸) and waited. I complained, “Let me have some warm water!”It took forever for the hot water to work its way through the pipes to the back of the house. Needles to say, the bath wasn’t relaxing.
The next afternoon, I arrived in Honduras. After the conference, my friend took me to meet some of her family members. They lived in a stick-and-mud house and slept on dirt floors. The women cooked outside on the stove. Still, even in these awful conditions, everyone I met had a smile on his or her face. They were so generous and almost always insisted we stay for coffee.
On our way we passed a pond which was covered with green slime (粘液). One woman pushed the slime back with a stick while the other put the water into a bucket. I prayed, “Please don’t let them offer coffee. ”
After we were invited in, a little girl ran inside. She held a mango in each hand. The one in her left hand was half eaten. This little beauty held out her right hand and offered me the other mango, which I gladly accepted. Her eyes danced. I remember thinking, “She has no idea that she is poor. ”
When it was to leave, we walked outside and I noticed a muddy stream that ran beside their home. My friend said, “That is where they bathe. It is also where the animals drink and they push out waste.”
The evening I returned home I went into my perfect bathroom and twisted the hot water handle. While bathing, I thought of this simple pleasure. Clean water wasn’t my right; it was luck.

In a research lab in New Jersey. U.S, 16-year-old Alon Millet carefully squeezes out a special solution(溶液)onto some mung beans(绿豆)drop by drop, trying to help fight world hunger.
Last year, the teenager was one of the four students who received a $10,000 award from the US
Agency for International development—chosen from 1,700 high schools in more than 70 countries. Millet’s experiments “could change the way plants are grown in the developing world”, protecting them against drought and natural disasters, said Courtney Mason, a program manager at the agency.
Three years ago, Millet’s father told him that an Israeli company had used a protein solution to make trees grow larger. And that, in tum., helped to produce more paper with fewer trees. “So I started thinking, ‘what else could this be used for?’” said Millet. He chose mung bean, an important crop in the developing world, which provides a good amount of protein and grows quickly. Then he contacted the company, FuturaGene, whose scientist agreed to share the solution.
He started experimenting. Could the beans grow larger and survive in tough environments? After three years of repeatedly putting the seeds into the solution, measuring, testing and examining, “some pretty good things happened, ”he said.
Donna Leonardi, his adviser, said she “sees a mature researcher in him, who sees the ‘big picture’ in what his research could do for people. And he’s not afraid to fail. He sees problems as challenges. ”
Millet is now on his 26th experiment with his mung beans, continuing his search for a better understanding of how the solution is changing the bean.

People have different ways of dealing with a common cold. Some take medicines such as aspirin (阿司匹林)while others try popular home remedies (疗法) like herbal tea or chicken soup. Yet here is the tough truth about the common cold: nothing rally cures it. So why do people sometimes believe their remedies work? According to James Taylor, professor at the University of Washington, colds usually go away on their own in about a week, improving a little each day after symptoms peak, so it’s easy to believe that it’s medicine rather than time that deserves the credit, USA Today reported.
Recently, scientists came closer to figuring out why we are powerless against a cold. To understand it, you first need to know how antiviral (抗病毒的) drugs work. They attack the virus by attaching to and changing the surface structures of the virus. Meanwhile, the drug must fit and lock into the virus like the right piece of a jigsaw (拼图) puzzle, which means scientists have to identify the virus and build a 3-D model to study its surface before they can design an antiviral drug. The two cold viruses known to scientists were rhinovirus A and B. But they didn’t find out the existence of a third virus, rhinovirus C, until 2006. All three of them contribute to the common cold, but drugs that work well against rhinovirus A and B have little effect when used against C.
“This explains most of the previous failures of drug trials against rhinovirus, ” Professor Ann at University of Wisconsin, US told Science Daily.
Now, more than 10 years after the discovery of rhinovirus C, scientists have finally built a highly-detailed (高清的) 3-D model of the virus, with which in hand, hopefully a real cure for common cold is on its way. Soon we may no longer have to waste our money on medicines that don’t really work.
28. The author wants to tell us in the reading.
A. different ways to deal with a common cold
B. why nothing cures a common cold
C. how we cure a common cold
D. different causes of a common cold
39. What does the underlined word “this”refer to?
A. The reason why scientist haven’t defeated all the viruses.
B. The reason why scientists haven’t built a model of the rthinovirus..
C. The fact that all drugs have great effect on the three rthinovirus.
D. The fact that not all drugs work well against the three rhinovirus.
30. What’s the benefit of building 3-D model of the virus ?
A. It makes a cure for common cold possible.
B. It helps to identify the virus.
C. It changes the surface of the virus.
D. It shows the work of medicines.

Three boys and three girls were going to the beach. When they boarded the bus, they were carrying sandwiches and wine, dreaming of golden beaches. Suddenly, they noticed Vingo. He sat in front of them, eyes fixed upon a photo, completely in silence.
Deep into the night, the bus pulled into Howard Johnson’s, a service area, and everybody got on except Vingo. The young people began to wonder about him. When they came back, one of the girls sat beside him and introduced herself. “Want some wine?” she said. He smiled and took a swig from the bottle. He thanked her and became silent again.
The next morning, they awoke outside another Howard Johnson’s, and this time Vingo went in. The girl insisted that he join them. He ordered black coffee and some cookies. When they returned, the girl sat with Vingo again. After a while, slowly and painfully, he began his story. He had been in
prison for the past four years, and now he was going home.
“Are you married?”
“I don’t know. ”
“You don’t know?” she said.
“Well, when I was in prison I wrote to my wife, ” he said, “I told her that I was going to be away for a long time, and that if she couldn’t stand it, if the kids kept asking questions, and if it hurt her too much, she could just forget me. I’d understand. Get a new guy, I said. She’s a wonderful woman. I told her she didn’t have to write me. And she didn’t. Not for three and a half years. ”
“And you’re going home now, not knowing?”
“Yeah. Well, last week, we was sure the parole(假释) was coming through, I wrote her again. We used to live in Brunswick and there’s a big oak(橡树) tree just as you come into town. I told her that if she didn’t have a new man and if she’d take me back, she should put yellow handkerchief on the tree and I’d get off and come home. If she didn’t want me, forget it—no handkerchief and I’d go on through. ”
“Wow, ” the girl exclaimed, “Wow, ”
She told the others, and soon all of them were in it.

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
Possible version :
Looking at the photo, the young people found a young woman and three children in it. “What a lovely woman and cute kids. ” “Yeah, she is a smart woman who can always make our small house warm and comfortable. ” Vingo murmured. With Brunswick approaching, Vingo stopped staring at the photo, tightening his face, as if protecting himself against another disappointment. The young people took over window seats, waiting for the coming of the oak tree. Then Brunswick was ten miles, and then five. All the people opened their eyes wide, waiting for a miracle. Suddenly, they all jumped up from their seats, screaming except Vingo.
Vingo sat there amazed, staring at the oak tree. It was covered with yellow handkerchiefs, twenty or thirty of them, maybe hundreds, flying in the wind. The oak tree stood like a banner of welcome, blowing in the wind. All the young people were up out of their seats, shouting, crying, doing small dances or shaking fists in triumph As the young people remained thrilled, Vingo slowly rose from his seat, holding himself tightly , and made his way to the front of the bus to go home.
