Long ago a Native American chief named Shenandoah lived with his tribes(部落) in what is now the state of Virginia. Little is known about Shenandoah, but in some way, the soft sound of his name was given to a river. The Shenandoah River still flows in a deep valley between the Allegheny and Blue Ridge Mountains, just as it did when Chief Shenandoah lived. It is a slow moving river, soft and as beautiful as its name. Some word experts who believe the word “Shenandoah” means “spruce river” because the waters of the river run through great forests of spruce trees(云杉). And this explanation could be correct.
However, there is an old Native American story which is far more beautiful than that of the experts. Centuries before Europeans came to the New World, there was a great lake of blue water hidden in the mountains of Virginia. For hundreds of years, Native American tribes lived near this lake, feeding on the fish from its clean waters. The Native Americans often climbed up the mountains and camped there during their long hunts for food. In the evenings they sat near their camp and looked down at the beautiful lake.
On a clear, starry night you could see thousands of stars shining and dancing on the water below. The Native Americans loved this lake, and because they could see the stars in it, they called the lake, “Clear Daughter of the Stars.” In their language, the word for this was “Shenandoah.”
One day the lake started to disappear. Its water ran out of the valley, through a break in the mountain side. The waters ran on and on until they joined another river known as the Potomac. At last, the lake was gone. In its place was only a river. It is the beautiful Shenandoah River today.
However, the word Shenandoah becomes well known to people because someone wrote a song about it some years ago.“Shenandoah” is perhaps one of America’s most recognizable folk songs. Some say the song refers to the river. Others say it is about the daughter of Chief Shenandoah. Regardless of what the song is about, "Shenandoah" remains an American classic.“O1 Shenandoah, I love your daughter, Away you rolling river; O Shenandoah, I love your daughter, Away I'm bound to go, 'Cross the wide Missouri …”

Americans love peanut butter. The average child will eat 1,500 peanut butter before he or she graduates high school. But there is a controversy over a new peanut butter. It is called STEEM Peanut Butter. This peanut butter adds a new ingredient: caffeine. Coffee is a popular morning drink because it has caffeine and gives people energy in the morning. Even small amounts of caffeine can be dangerous to children.
United States Senator(参议员) Charles Schumer says.“Peanut butter, one of the snacks most closely connected with children, might have to be stored in the medicine cupboard rather than in the kitchen cupboard. This will shock the Food and Drug Administration.” Schumer wants the U.S. FDA to investigate. He observed that earlier the FDA prevented plans for a caffeinated chewing gum.
STEEM, the manufacturer, said, “We are selling the caffeinated peanut butter all over the world. The product provides caffeine in an easily digestible way. Caffeinated foods have been sold in U.S. stores for well over a decade and are in no way a new idea. Customers tell us they want to eat the caffeinated peanut butter so they don’t have to drink as much coffee or energy drinks. The peanut butter is not intended for children.”
“Peanut butter has been a favorite of children for generations,” Schumer continued: “Parents across the country have to worry about a scene in which their child might unknowingly bite into a peanut butter that contains more caffeine than two cups of coffee.”
The American Academy of Pediatrics says caffeine in small amounts can help the physical performance of adults. But the academy urges parents not to allow children to take even small amounts of caffeine owing to caffeine’s possible negative effects on a child’s heart and brain development.
4. There is a controversy over the STEEM Peanut Butter because it contains ______.
A. fat B. peanut C. caffeine D. nutrition
5. Charles Schumer suggests that the new peanut butter should be ______.
A. kept in the kitchen cupboard B. out of children’s reach
C. manufactured in huge quantities D. eaten by children for generations
6. According to STEEM, the new peanut butter is popular with adults because______.
A. it is a traditional food B. it is digested more easily
C. its production is not banned D. they eat it instead of energy drinks
7. We can guess from the text that the responsibility of the Food and Drug Administration is to______.
A. introduce new foods and drugs B. promote the sales of foods and drugs
C. guarantee the safety of foods and drugs D. improve the physical performance of adults

State media Guangming Daily published an article on March 28 blaming the game for “distorting history.” The article claimed that, despite using many famous names from Chinese history, "King of Glory" completely misrepresented the figures’ true stories and status.
According to the newspaper, famous poet Li Bai from the Tang Dynasty became an assassin (刺 客), while noted doctor Bian Que from the Spring and Autumn Period was cast as an expert on poison. More than 60 characters in the game were characters from history, including many from the classic novel “Romance of the Three Kingdoms.”
“They (the characters in the game) not only travel through time and space to fight together, but also take on historical figures’ names with no connection at all to their experiences in history,” the newspaper argued, adding that this characteristic could easily confuse young players. Some 54 percent of the game’s players are aged between 11 and 20, the newspaper added.
“King of Glory” is a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game designed by Tencent Games. It was launched in 2015. In 2016, the total profit of the game reached nearly 7 billion RMB, some 18 percent of the total profit for mobile gaming in China.
The Guangming Daily article was met with significant support and approval. Some people pointed to online search results for the historical figures, which increasingly
provide information about the characters in the game rather than the real historical figures.
However, some hit back at the criticism, arguing that games are supposed to be creative, and that “King of Glory” doesn’t claim to be set in any specific historical period.
“I am aware that there are many young players, some even in primary school. Some might be affected by the game in certain ways, but it can do a lot of good if students become interested in the characters and do more research to that end,” one “King of Glory” player told the People’s Daily Online.
8. What does the underlined word “distorting” in paragragh 1 mean?
A. Reflecting. B. Recording. C. Twisting. D. Creating.
9. Which is NOT true according to the passage?
A. About half of the game’s players range from11 to 20 in age.
B. In 2016 the total profit for mobile games in China amounts to about 39 billion RMB.
C. You may get information about the assassin Li Bai in the game through a search engine.
D. Many young players become interested in the historical figures through the game.
10. What is the author’s main purpose of writing the passage?
A. To explain why the game is popular.
B. To present that the game has become a target for criticism.
C. To convince people that the game is distorting history.
D. To introduce the game to the public.
11. What’s the author’s attitude towards the game?
A. Objective. B. Doubtful. C. Favorable. D. Disapproving.

Soaping up your hands may do more than just get rid of bacteria. It may wash away the inner stress you feel right after being forced to make a choice between two attractive choices, according to a new study. The study builds on the past research into a phenomenon known as “the Macbeth effect”. It turns out that Shakespeare was really onto something when he imagined Lady Macbeth trying to clean her conscience by rubbing (擦) invisible bloodstains (血迹) from her hands in his tragedy Macbeth.
A few years ago, scientists asked people to describe a past wrong act. If people were then given a chance to clean their hands, they later expressed less guilty than people who hadn’t cleaned.
This finding interested W. S. Lee, a researcher, “anything from the past, any kind of negative emotional experiences might be washed away,” says Lee.
He decided to test hand washing’s effect on one kind of bad feeling: the stress we feel after being forced to choose between two attractive choices, because picking one choice makes us feel that we’ve lost the other.
People usually try to calm this inner conflict by later exaggerating(夸大) the positive aspects of their choice.
He had students rank 10 different music CDs. Then he offered students two of the CDs and told them to select one as a gift. Some students then used liquid soap. Others only looked at the soap or sniffed it. “Actually, you do not need water and soap,” says Lee.
Later, the students again had to rank all the music CDs. People who didn’t wash their hands had the normal response—they scored their take-home CD higher, suggesting that they now saw it as an even more attractive one than before. But this wasn’t true for the hand washers. They ranked the music about the same.
“They feel no need at all to justify the choice,” says Lee.
But Lee also says it’s too soon to know whether people should head for a sink after making a tough choice. He says washing may help decision-makers by cleaning away mental disorder. But perhaps if they don’t go through the usual post-decision process of justifying their choice, they might feel more sorrow in the long run.
12. What is true about “the Macbeth effect”?
A. Shakespeare used to wash his hands before writing Macbeth.
B. Macbeth knew about the importance of cleaning hands.
C. People feel less ashamed after washing their hands.
D. Lady Macbeth had a habit of washing hands.
13. In Lee’s experiment, those who didn’t wash their hands after making a choice __________.
A. felt regretful about their choice
B. valued their choice more than before
C. wished they had washed their hands
D. didn’t care about their choice
14. According to Lee, those hand washers ____________.
A. will surely feel more sorrow in the long run
B. tend to exaggerate the positive side of their choice
C. will never regret their choice
D. consider justifying their choice unnecessary
15. What is the best title of the text?
A. Benefits of Washing Your Hands
B. Importance of Justifying Your Choice
C. Washing Away Your Stress
D. How to Reduce Choice Anxiety

Gratitude is beneficial to both the one giving and the one receiving. You can show gratitude to
others by saying “please and thank you” and “yes (or no) ma’am (or sir).” 16 It can be as simple as getting up in the morning and appreciating that you woke up — not everyone has that privilege!
Instead of getting mad at others, show them gratitude. Make an effort to communicate more effectively instead of being critical or judgmental. When you are having a hard day at work, take a break and remember some of the good days that you’ve had that month. 17
Research shows that individuals who express gratitude have a more positive outlook on life, better health, less stress; they are more likely to forgive; and they have stronger relationships.
18 Having a gratitude box reminds us of the feeling we felt when we were “in the moment.” It allows us to be more mindful and present. So find a medium-sized box you like and start recording all of your happy memories and events throughout the year. Keep some decorative paper close so that you can jot(略记) these memories down and place them in the box. 19 And you can remember all of the good times that you have had throughout the year.
20 Be specific when you reflect back on your memory so that you won’t forget any important details. If possible, be personal and include names when writing down your entry.
A. Instead of the common practice of using a gratitude journal, I started using a gratitude box.
B. You shouldn’t be too critical.
C. You can record your happy memories in the box.
D. There are many reasons for which to express your gratitude.
E. Don’t forget that it is only a bad day, not a bad life.
F. When you are having a bad day, you can reach into your gratitude box.
G. Be creative when writing down what you are grateful for.
