What about a dental office that mimics(模仿) the spirit of Disneyland? If you're looking for a dental office that provides the best care and the best environment, you're looking for Dr. Licking's office in Sunnyvale.‎ Office manager Judy, who has worked with Dr. Licking for 38 years, speaks highly of his kindness. She believes that the office is “the Disneyland of dentistry”. Everyone from children to their grandparents loves the environment and care they receive from this welcoming office.‎ Dr. Licking is known as the best dental care provider for anyone who fears facing appointments with the dental office. The staff goes out of their way to make patients feel comfortable and at ease. Dr. Licking and Judy set the standard with their saying, “When someone comes to your home, you ‎ stand up and welcome them, like an old family friend.”‎ Dr. Licking's office has all. They recently relocated to put the new equipment into their practice. The office is equipped with an intra-oral video camera, and as a patient you can get pictures of your teeth as you're walking out the door.‎ Setting himself apart from other dentists, Dr. Licking continues his education beyond what is required. To do it, they wore aquatic (水上的) shoes they designed and created.‎ ‎ Alex Quinones was the first to make it to the other side of a 175foot lake on campus in record time—just over a minute. Quinones, who wore oversized boatlike shoes, also won last year and will receive $500. Students had to wear the aquatic shoes and make it across the lake in order to earn an “A” on the assignment for Architecture Professor Jaime Canaves, Materials and Methods Construction Class. “It's traditional in a school of architecture to do boats out of cardboard for a boat race. I thought our students were a little bit more special than that,” Canaves said. “We decided to do the walk on water event to take it to the next level.”‎ ‎ A total of 79 students competed in the race this year in 41 teams. Only 10 teams failed to cross the lake. Others who fell got back up and made it to the end. The race is open to all students and ‎ anyone in the community. The youngest person to ever participate was a 9yearold girl who competed in place of her mother, while the oldest was a 67yearold female.‎ ‎ A large crowd on campus joined Canaves as he cheered on the racers. He shouted encouraging words, but also laughed as some unsteadily made their way to the end.‎ ‎ “A part of this is for them to have more understanding of designing and make it work better, ” he said. It is also a lesson in life for the students.‎ ‎ “Anything, including walking on water, is possible, if you do the research, test it and go through the design process seriously.”‎ ‎14. For what purpose did the students take part in the race?‎ ‎ A. To go across the lake to school. B. To pass Professor Canaves' class.‎ ‎ C. To test their balance on the water. D. Professor Canaves attaches importance to handson learning experience.‎ ‎17. The purpose of the passage is to ________.‎ ‎ A. show his approval of the unique teaching style ‎ ‎ B. inspire teachers to be more creative ‎ C. report an interesting assignment ‎ D. encourage more people to take part in the race C ‎ Brown cows may not actually make chocolate milk, but pink silkworms (蚕) do produce pink silk, a team of scientists has discovered. To see if they could produce predyed silk—silk that comes colored, straight from the source—the team fed ordinary silkworms mulberry (桑树) leaves that had been sprayed (喷洒) with fabric (织物) dyes (染色剂). Out of seven tested dyes, only one worked, producing a thread that reminded me of pinkdyed hair.‎ ‎ And yes, the worms themselves take on some color before they produce silk. Their colorful diets did not affect their growth, the team, which included engineers and biologists from the CSIRNational Chemical Laboratory in India, reports in the journal ACS Sustainable Chemistry & Engineering. (The researchers didn't look too deeply into how the dyes affected the silkworms' health. After all, silkworms die when people harvest their silk.)‎ ‎ The team made dyeing silk this way because coloring fabric normally uses large amounts of fresh water. The water gets polluted with dangerous chemicals in the process, requiring costly treatment before factories can send it back into waterways. Dyeing silk directly by feeding silkworms would avoid those waterwashing steps. Scientists are just starting to study this idea. However, it remains to be seen if it's commercially successful. In this experiment, the Indian team tested seven dyes, which are cheap and popular in the industry.‎ ‎ The scientists found different dyes moved through silkworms' bodies differently. Some never made it into the worms' silk at all. Others colored the worms and their silk, but the color disappears before the silk is turned into fabric. Only one dye, named “direct acid fast red”, showed up in the final, washed silk threads. By the time it made it there, it was a pleasant, light pink.‎ ‎18. The text is most probably a(n) ________.‎ ‎ A. science report B. tourist guide C. animal experiment D. fashion advertisement ‎19. Silkworms can produce pink silk because ________.‎ ‎ A. they are born pink B. they are dyed pink ‎ C. they grow in pink water D. they are fed dyed food ‎20. Where is the experiment carried out? ‎ ‎ A. In America. B. In India. C. In Israel. D. In China.‎ ‎21. How many dyes have been proved successful in the experiment?‎ ‎ A. One. B. Three. C. Five. D. Seven.‎ D How many times do you check your Facebook page in a day to see whether your latest post has got another “like” or “thumbs up”?‎ Although you might be embarrassed to admit how many times you do this, don’t worry—psychological findings have shown it’s completely normal. In fact, the pleasure we derive from receiving a “like” is equal to that of eating chocolate or winning money, and we can’t help wanting more. According to the findings, which observed 32 teens aged between 13 and 18, the feedback circuit (反馈回路) in the teens’ brains is particularly sensitive, and the “social” and “visual” parts of their brains were active when they received “likes” on the social network. The research also showed that though the thumbs up might come from complete strangers, the good they derive from them worked all the same.‎ So, does it mean we should try our best to win as many thumbs up as possible? Not necessarily so if we know the reasons behind our desire for attention. In “why do people long for attention” by M. Farouk Radwan, he explained several cases in which people naturally longed for attention. Radwan said people who were an only child, who were used to being the center of attention in their house, may try to copy these conditions. Feeling “overlooked and unappreciated” might also lead you to long for attention. Other times, the state of being jealous, or wanting to cover your mistakes may also contribute to such longings.‎ In fact, too much desire for attention can create anxiety, and in turn ruin your happiness even when you get it. So what can we do about it? The answer is quite simple. “If people could adopt goals not focused on their own self-esteem(自尊)but on something larger than their self, such as what they can create or contribute to others, they would be less sensitive to some of the negative effects of pursuing self-esteem,” wrote psychology professor Jennifer Crocker.‎ So perhaps the answer to our addiction to “likes” is simply to focus on something larger than ourselves—a hard, but a worthy one. ‎ ‎22. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “derive” in Paragraph 2?‎ ‎ A. deliver B. give C. prevent D. get ‎23. What’s the reaction of receiving “likes” on the social network to the brain? ‎ ‎ A. The brain becomes more nervous. B. Some parts of the brain are active.‎ ‎ C. The brain becomes less sensitive. D. The brain becomes cleverer.‎ ‎24. Who wants to get more attention according to the passage?‎ ‎ A. The only child. B. The old who lives happily with children.‎ ‎ C. The young who feels anxious. D. Teens who want to discover their mistakes.‎ ‎25. What’s Crocker’s suggestion about the negative effects of getting self-esteem?‎ ‎ A. Doing an interesting matter. B. Working harder than ever before.‎ ‎ C. Having a bigger goal than their self. D. Not checking your Facebook page in a day. ‎ 第二节 选句填空(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ Researchers define self-control or self-discipline as “ability to control or change one’s inner responses”. 26 However, some people think that as an immediate consequence of leading lives of constant self-control, they aren’t likely to gain a lot of pleasure from life. ‎ ‎ 27 To start, 414 adults completed on online survey. In the survey, they rated the their self-control by indicating how much they agreed with 14 statements, such as “I indeed do certain things that are bad for me, if they are fun. ”‎ In their study, 205 adults were given smart phones and required to report their emotions at random moments throughout the week. 28 If so, they had to report how hard they tried to resist them, and whether they eventually ended up acting on them.‎ ‎ The researchers found that the more self-control people had, the more satisfied they were with their lives in the long run. 29 In fact, such people’s increased happiness to a large extent accounted for the increased life satisfaction. ‎ These researchers also figured out that people high in self-control are simply less likely to find themselves in situations where that’s even an issue. They don’t waste time fighting inner battles over whether or not to eat a second piece of cake. 30 And that, it would seem, makes them happier... even if occasionally a little bit sad.‎ A. In a word, they are not bothered about such little desires.‎ B. Researchers checked these general ideas through a survey and study.‎ C. It is generally believed that in the long run self-control can make people happier.‎ D. Meanwhile, they were also asked to report whether they were experiencing any desires.‎ E. However, people with more self-control were also more likely to be happy in the short run.‎ F. But they are still uncertain why some people are more able to control their inner responses.‎ G. Most adults reported they failed to control their desire to play video games before an exam.‎ ‎ ‎ 第三部分 语言知识及应用(共两节,满分45分)‎ 第一节 完形填空 (共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分)‎ 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项(A、B、C、D)中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。‎ When our selfconfidence is low, we sometimes tend to believe what others think of us. In today’s program, we’re going to talk about computer games and kids. As a parent, you probably know that video and computer games are very popular with children. However, maybe you don’t know much about the games your kids are playing. Here are some popular electronic games:‎ Firstly, role-playing --- these games take place in a fantasy world. Players take the role of a character set in advance. Many children, even adults, play these games online. Secondly, imitation --- in these games, players can re-create real situations, such as flying a spaceship. They can also create their own cities, countries, or even families, and act as the planner or leader to meet the needs of the game characters. Finally, action-adventure --- these games are fast moving and full of adventure. In these games, players have different challenges, such as solving puzzles, winning races, ‎ and searching for treasures.‎ However, as a parent, it’s a good idea to check out the games your children play to make sure they aren’t too violent. It’s also important to limit the amount of time your children spend playing electronic games.‎ Questions:‎ ‎5. How many electronic games does the speaker mention?‎ ‎6. What do players do in the games of action-adventure?‎ 第二部分 Text 4‎ To the firefighters’ surprise, dropping a spoon may have saved Joy Horton’s life. The 73-year-old woman has been living alone for almost ten years. One Monday morning, as usual, she was preparing some food in her western New York home on Lake Ontario. As she was washing something by the kitchen sink, the spoon she had washed happened to drop onto the floor, so she bent down to pick it up. Just then her house explode. Everything in her house was damaged, but Joy Horton wasn’t seriously injured. She crawled out from underneath the broken bricks and walked to her daughter’s home nearby to get help. Fire officials said no people were injured besides Joy Horton in the explosion. Because Joy was bending down when the explosion happened, the kitchen sink and counter top helped keep the broken things from hitting her. The police haven’t found out what caused the explosion. They’re still looking into the cause. Joy said it might have been caused by one of the old gas pipes, as her house was over one hundred years old.‎ Questions:‎ ‎7. How old is Joy?‎ ‎8. When did Joy’s house explode?‎ ‎9. How many people were injured in the explosion?‎ ‎10. What did Joy say might have caused the explosion?‎
