Betty is not traditional American beauty. She is unfashionable, has thick red glasses, untidy hair and large metal braces (牙套) on her teeth. But this hasn’t stopped her from becoming one of American’s favorite TV characters. So how did she manage to do it?
The answer is that charm can be more attractive than beauty. Betty is the main character in a TV show Ugly Betty. The show is about her life as an office worker at a fashion magazine in New York.
The TV show has just started. Betty has many exciting experiences and romantic stories. Betty is often looked down on and laughed at by the people around. But she manages to do better than others with her hard work, charm and wisdom. The show tells us about how a girl goes from an ugly young duck into a beautiful swan.
Though you may know the ending of the show from the beginning and the story is familiar to many of us, it has still been a big success in the USA. It has attracted a large number of viewers and won two Golden Globes awards, one of the highest honors for a television program in the USA.“ I think you can see a bit of Betty in all of us, and I mean men as well, because it’s about the underdog (弱者)”,says Ashley Jensen, who plays one of the characters on the show.
The program is so popular because of the performance of the 23-year-old actress America Ferrera who plays the role of Betty. She brings the character alive on the screen.
5. Betty is popular because of ________.
A. her clothes B. her charm C. her personality D. her appearance
6. Which is the reason for the success of the show?
A. A large number of viewers. B. Her life as an office worker.

B. Betty acts as a beautiful swan on the show.
C. Betty is an American favorite TV character.
D. Betty is often looked down on by the people around.
8. What can be the best title for the passage?

Most of the time, people wear hats to protect themselves from harsh weather conditions. Hats are also worn to show politeness and as signs of social position. But nowadays, hats, especially women’s hats, are much more than that. More exactly, hats have changed into fashion and style symbols by many movie stars. What’s more, people now consider many different features when choosing even a simple hat. Many designers point out that, when choosing the right hat, it’s important to consider the color of your skin as well as your hair, your height, and the shape of your face.
First of all, the color of the hat should match the color of your skin and hair. For instance, black hats should be avoided if you are dark skinned. If a purple hat is placed on top of red hair, one will look as attractive as a summer flower. Second, the height of the hat is also an important point. Tall women should not go for hats with tall crowns, just as short women should choose hats with upturned brims (边缘)to give the look of height. Third, and most importantly, the shape of the face decides the kind of hat one should pick. A small, gentle hat that fits the head looks good on a small face. However, women with big, round faces should choose a different style.
As the saying goes, “Fine feathers make fine birds.” A good hat can not only help your dress but also support your features, so why not choose the best possible one next time you want to be in public?
9. What does the underlined word“harsh”in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. good B. bad C. strange D. different
10. According to the article, which of the following women would look most attractive?
A. A red-haired woman who wears a purple hat.
B. A big-faced woman who wears a small, nice hat.
C. A tall woman who wears a hat with a tall crown.
D. A small dark-skinned woman who wears a black hat with a tall crown.
11. What does the last paragraph suggest?
A. Hats are worn on the head to keep warm.
B. Hats can make you look much taller.
C. Hats are not as important as character.
D. Hats can help you look better in public.
D
Want a glance of the future of health care? Take a look at the way the various networks of people about patient care are being connected to one another, and how this new connectivity is being exploited to deliver medicine to the patient —no matter where he or she may be.
Online doctors offering advice based on normal symptoms(症状) are the most obvious example. Increasingly, however, remote diagnosis(远程诊断) will be based on real physiological data(生理数据) from the actual patient. A group from the University of Kentucky has shown that by using personal data assistance plus a mobile phone, it is perfectly practical to send a patient’s important
signs over the telephone. With this kind of equipment, the cry asking whether there was a doctor in the house could well be a thing of the past.
Other medical technology groups are working on applying telemedicine to rural(countryside) care. And at least one team wants to use telemedicine as a tool for disaster need—especially after earthquakes. On the whole, the trend is towards providing global access to medical data and experts’ opinions.
But there is one problem. Bandwidth(宽带) is the limiting factor for sending complex(复杂的) medical pictures around the world — CT photos being one of the biggest bandwidth users. Communication satellites may be able to deal with the short-term needs during disasters such as earthquakes or wars. But medicine is looking towards both the second-generation Internet and third-generation mobile phones for the future of remote medical service.
Doctors have met to discuss computer-based tools for medical diagnosis, training and telemedicine. With the falling price of broadband communications, the new technologies should start a new time when telemedicine and the sharing of medical information, experts’ opinions and diagnosis are common.
12. The writer chiefly talks about _______.
A. the use of telemedicine B. the on-lined doctors
C. medical care and treatment D. communication improvement
13. The basis of remote diagnosis will be _______.
A. personal data assistance
B. some words of a patient
C. real physiological information
D. medical pictures from the Internet
14. Which of the following statements is true according to the text?
A. Patients don’t need doctors in hospitals any more.
B. It is impossible to send a patient’s signs over the telephone.
C. Many teams use telemedicine dealing with disasters now.
D. Broadband communications will become cheaper in the future.
15. The “problem” in the fourth paragraph refers to the fact that _______.
A. bandwidth isn’t big enough to send complex medical pictures
B. the second-generation of Internet has not become popular yet
C. communication satellites can only deal with short-term needs
D. there is not enough equipment for spreading the medical care

Friends
Just as a band or gang of superheroes needs members who have different talents and powers, a circle of friends should have exactly the same thing. 16 . They also help us to keep broader perspective on life. You need different types of friends in the same way that you need food from different food groups.
The friend who is cooler than you
The world changes quickly and some people are just that little bit better at keeping up with what's hip (非常时尚的) than we are, like those friends who know that no one ever says "hip" any more, for instance. We like to be around these people, because they're a beacon of cool. Cool things just flock (蜂拥) to them. These are the people who help you to open your eyes. 17

This friend is only an important role model if they behave in ways that are genuine. They will see the best in you and give you important feedback on both your strengths and weaknesses.
The friend who doesn't know any of your other friend
We like killing two birds with one stone by catching up with several groups of friends at once.
19 Therefore, he can offer objective advice so it is a bonus that your friendship exists without orbiting around your other ones. There is a level of privacy to this friendship that doesn't exist in friendship circles. It will be easier to share some of your hopes and dreams, fears and concerns knowing that they are not going to be discussed when you're not around.
The friend who is painfully honest
Your friends will not always tell you what you want to hear, but they'll certainly tell you what you need to know if they are really that into you. 20 . They're also there to keep you away from mixing paisleys and stripes (麻烦事). They are those who do it with good intentions and for your own A. When you meet troubles some friends are always away from us.
B. These people enrich your life by exposing you to things that may have otherwise have passed you by.
C. But there are times when you need to make a call to a friend who is completely uninvolved and removed from a situation.
D. These people know you better than you know them and accept them unconditionally.
E. It’s important to have diversity and to be able to look for support from a variety of sources.
