BLOOD DRIVE & MARROW (骨髄) REGISTRATION
“These patients deserve a chance at a normal, happy future and they rely on the kindness of the strangers to make that happen.
—Daisy, Isabelle’s Mother
Isabelle is the daughter of Daisy and Saman Mirzaei. In January 2008 Isabelle was diagnosed (诊断) with a genetic blood disorder, beta thalassemia (地中海贫血). Isabelle’s body is unable to produce healthy red blood cells. As a result, Isabelle has been receiving blood transfusions (输血) every 4-6weeks since she was 11 months old. A lifetime of regular transfusions can lead to serious medical problems. Her only chance at a normal, healthy life is to have a marrow transplant. Isabelle is an only child, so doctors have started a search for an unrelated marrow donor through The Match Registry. The Mirzaei family asks that you consider helping patients like Isabelle by registering to be a marrow donor and give the gift of life, the gift of blood.

I don’t think I can recall a time when I wasn’t aware of the beauty of the ocean. Growing up in Australia, I had the good fortune of having the sea at my side. The first time I went to Halfmoon Bay. I suddenly had the feeling of not being able to feel the ground with my feet anymore.
For my 10th birthday, my sister and I were taken out to the Great Barrier Reef. There were fish in different colors, caves and layers of coral. They made such an impression on me. When I learned that only 1 percent of Australia’s Coral Sea was protected, I was shocked. Australian marine life is particularly important because the reefs have more marine species than any other country on earth. But sadly, only 45% of the world’s reefs are considered healthy.
This statistic is depressing, so it’s important for us to do everything to protect them. The hope that the Coral Sea remains a complete eco-system has led me to take action. I’ve become involved with the Protect Our Coral Sea activity, which aims to create the largest marine park in the world. It would serve as a place where the ocean’s species will all have a safe place forever.
Together, Angus and I created a little video and we hope it will inspire people to be a part of the movement. Angus also shares many beautiful childhood memories of the ocean as a young boy, who grew up sailing, admiring the beauty of the ocean, and trying to find the secrets of ocean species.

A. is escaping from the Coral Sea gradually B. depends on reefs for living greatly
C. may be faced with danger D. is protected better than that in other oceans
26. The Protect Our Coral Sea activity is intended to .
A. contribute to a complete eco-system B. prevent more marine species being endangered
C. set up a large nature reserve for reefs D. raise more teenagers’ environmental awareness
27. Angus and the author created a little video to .
A. urge more people to take action to protect the marine species
B. inspire more people to explore the secret of the ocean
C. share their childhood experiences about the ocean
D. bring back to people their memory of ocean species

When we do the same movements with our bodies over and over again, we overuse some muscles. And that overuse can lead to strain (紧张) and injury. Sometimes those problems can come from doing sports. But exercise professionals say they are now seeing another cause for muscle problems: hand-held technology devices (设备).
Staring down at your phone or tablet for long periods of time puts great tension on your neck and spine (脊椎). Mary people who use tech devices also bend their shoulders forward. Experts say this posture (姿势) puts strain on the entire upper body. Muscle strain linked to hand-held technology has become such a common condition that it now has a name: tech-neck.
Kimberly Fielding, an exercise teacher in New York City explains that constantly looking down at our devices creates an unnatural bend in our spine. This can cause nerve pain and other problems. “A lot of the curves of the neck can change, so instead of the neck spine going inward, the curve can be a little bit different and it causes nerve pain and disc herniation (椎间盘突出) and different muscle tension headaches-different things that really can reduce quality of life.”
Fielding created a class to directly address the problem of tech neck. The class uses different exercises to release tension in the upper body and strengthen back and neck muscles. Fielding says these exercises may feel uncomfortable in the beginning because the neck muscles may have become
weak.
However, you don’t need to take a class like Fielding’s. You can take simple steps to improve tech neck. For a quick fix, hold your phone at eye level. At the same time, take breaks from using your technology by standing up and stretching your legs often. Also, give your eyes a break by closing them throughout the day.
28. What does the underlined phrase “tech neck” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. The cell phone or iPad frequently hung on the neck.
B. The strong neck after technical physical exercises.
C. The decoration on the neck with hand-held devices.
D. The painful neck caused by electronic devices.
29. What can we learn from Kimberly Fielding’s findings?
A. Muscle tension can lead to spine curving and headaches.
B. Nerve pain and other problems are caused by disc herniation.
C. Staring down at your smartphone does great harm to your neck spine.
D. Quality of life depends in a large part on the condition of neck spine.
30. Why did Kimberly Fielding start the class?
A. To help those suffering from tech neck.
B. To introduce her newly-invented devices.
C. To further study the causes of tech neck.
D. To stress the danger of hand-held devices.
31. What is the purpose of the last paragraph?
A. To invite people to attend Fielding’s class.
B. To give some practical tips to prevent neck pain.
C. To advise those addicts TO exercise their necks.
D. To urge people to keep away from e-products.
D
Competition is an ideology (意识形态) that spreads all over our society and misleads our thinking. But it means no profits for anybody, no meaningful differentiation, and a struggle for survival. We advocate competition, see it as necessary, and set its laws; and as a result, we trap ourselves within it—the more we compete, the less we gain.
Our educational system both drives and reflects our craze for competition. Grades alone are precise measurement of each student’s competitiveness; pupils with the highest marks receive status and credits. And it gets worse as students rise to higher levels of the tournament. Higher education is the place where people who had big plans in high school get stuck in fierce competition with equally smart peers over conventional careers like management consulting and investment banking. For the privilege of being turning into conformists (顺从者), students (or their families) pay hundreds of thousands of dollars in rapidly rising tuition. Why are we doing this to ourselves?
I wish I had asked myself when I was younger. My path was so tracked that in my 8th-grade year, one of my friends predicted—accurately—that four years later I would enter Stanford. And I enrolled at Stanford Law School, where I competed even harder for the standard badges (徽章) of success. The highest prize in a law student’s world is unambiguous: the Supreme Court clerkship. I was so close to winning this last competition. If only I got the clerkship, I thought, I would be set for life. But I didn’t. At the time, I was frustrated.
In 2004, after f had built and sold PayPal, I ran into an old friend who had helped me prepare my tailed clerkship applications. We hadn’t spoken in nearly a decade. His first words to me were not “Hi Peter” or “How are you doing?” But rather, “So, aren’t you glad you didn’t get that clerkship?” Because if I hadn’t lost that last competition, we both knew that I never would have left the track laid down since middle school. Had I actually clerked on the Supreme Court, I probably would have spent my entire career taking depositions or drafting other people’s business deals instead of creating anything new. It’s hard to say how much would be different, but the opportunity costs were enormous.
Looking back at my ambition to become a lawyer, it looks less like a plan for the future and more like an excuse for the present It was a way to explain to anyone who would ask-to my parents, to my peers, and most of all to myself-that there was no need to worry. I was perfectly on track. But it turned out that my biggest problem was taking the track without thinking really hard about where it was going.
32. Students compete at school because .
A. they are assessed by grades B. they are under peer pressure
C. they want to find a secure job D. the tuition increases quickly
33. We can learn from passage that the writer .
A. didn’t have a clear plan for future at school B. did badly in study in the 8th grade
C. wasn’t a capable student in college D. didn’t want to obtain the clerkship
34. According to paragraph 4, we can know that the writer now .
A. is unsure whether his choice is correct B. regrets failing clerkship applications
C. is happy to have lost the clerkship D. thinks he could have had a better career
35. The writer shares his life story mainly to argue that .
A. people shouldn’t support competition B. grades cannot reflect students’ ability
C. failure can be a good thing sometimes D. we shouldn’t follow other people blindly

From the picture we can see a family of three walking on a long red carpet. The son, well dressed, wave s proudly in the middle while the father behind bends forward to hold the jacket and the mother in front rolls out the carpet, sweating.
It shows a common phenomenon nowadays that children are the focus of families, shouldering the hope of their pa rents. Parents arrange everything for their children and spare no effort to pave the way for their success. As a consequence, children become so reliant on their parents that they have no independent thought or creative ideas.
Such a situation is of great concern. In my opinion, overprotection and too much care are
extremely bad for children’s development. Instead of doing everything for them, parents should encourage their children to overcome difficulties and inspire them to develop by themselves. Only in this way can they grow up to be independent and become truly successful.
