Unbelievable Stories of Animals Acting Just Like Humans
◆Horses are picky eaters
Horses have an even better sense of smell than humans do. When horses raise their noses and open their nostrils (鼻孔) , their nervous system allows them to sense smells we can’t sense. This might explain why they refuse dirty water and carefully move around meadows, eating only the tastiest grasses, experts say.
◆Whale says thanks
In 2011, a whale expert spotted a humpback whale trapped in a fishing net and spent an hour freeing it. Afterward, in an hour-long display of thanks, the whale swam near their boat and leaped into the air about 40 times.
◆Pandas like to be naughty
Is there anything more lovely than a baby panda, except maybe a human baby? In fact, baby pandas sometimes behave like human babies. They sleep in the same positions and value their thumbs. Pandas are shy by nature for its shy behaviors such as covering its face with a paw of ducking its head when confronted by a stranger.
◆A cat honors its owner
Paper towels, and a plastic cup are just a few of the gifts that Toldo, a devoted three-year-old gray-and-white cat, has placed on his former owner Iozzelli Renzo’s grave every day since the man died in September 2011. Renzo adopted Toldo from a shelter when the cat was three months old, and the two formed an inseparable bond. After Renzo passed away, Toldo followed the coffin to the cemetery, and now "stands guard" at the grave for hours at a time.
21. What can horses do to pick delicious grasses?

Paris is the city of dreams. If you plan to head to Paris for a study period, then perhaps a little reality check is in order. But my experience was a romantic one.
I paved my path to Paris through an exchange program. On arrival in Paris, I was constantly reminded of the official processes I had to complete — forms to be filled in, meetings to attend, the list seemed endless.
Then the real work began. Once classes were underway, I found myself volunteering to do oral presentations and assignments first, rather than last. This method proved to be very helpful.
Once I had finished class for the week, I had an ever-increasing list of museums to visit, neighborhoods to explore, and cafés to sit in. Read books about Paris. Talk to locals and other foreigners living there. But the one thing that reading a book or talking to someone cannot do is to provide you with the experience of wandering Paris on foot. The people watching, the sounds of the city, the colors as the seasons change, they all add to the ecstasy that I experience in Paris as an exchange student.
After spending five months wandering through the charming neighborhoods, I fell in love with the atmosphere that came out from every open door, and with every spoken word. There is something comforting about walking to the market each Sunday to enjoy the beautiful display of fruits, vegetables and dairy products. There is warmth in saying bonjour to the passers-by.
On my last day in Paris, I confidently said, “Bonjour Monsieur,” as I passed the little store down the street. I guess the best part about going on exchange in Paris is falling in love with the city in your own way. And I know mine is unique and special to me, my own little pieces of Paris.
24. What does the underlined word "ecstasy" in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Courage. B. Imagination. C.Happiness. D. Reputation.
25. What does the passage mainly tell us?
A. An exchange student’s life. B. Charming neighborhoods.
C. An exchange program. D. A traveling experience.
26. Beyond reading books, which experience would the author treasure most?
A. Enjoying coffee in his spare time.
B. Greeting people in French in the street.
C. Buying vegetables in the market.
D. Hanging around in Paris.
27. According to the passage, what left the author the deepest impression?
A. The friendly people he met in Paris.
B. The special culture he experienced in the city.
C. The academic achievement he made in his study.
D. The presentations and assignments he did in class.

The spine (脊柱) stands at the center of your health, providing your body with structure and support. It also contains a major collection of nerves that deliver electric signals from the rest of the body to your brain. So it’s important to take care of it.
Staying in a good position is one of the most important things to keep your spine healthy. A proper position means standing or sitting while keeping your spins straight, except for its natural bending. Positions play a vital part even when you’re asleep. Stomach sleeping is far from a good idea. Many people prefer sleeping on their side, which is in the interests of their spine. Sleeping on your back has lots of benefits yet can cause lower back pain and put some pressure on your spine.
Staying still for too long — even if your position is good — can be hard on your back. Especially if you work at a task most of the day, it’s important to get up and stretch (伸展) periodically. Strength exercises with light weights like push-ups can also help by strengthening the muscles. However, don’t overdo the exercise, as repeated movements can hurt the muscles around the spine, as trying to lift heavy weights with poor technique.
Vitamins also affect the health of your spine. In particular, vitamin B and omega-3 fatty acids help keep nerves healthy. Another important part is vitamin D, which is required for strong bones. Vitamin D can come from some foods, but it’s also absorbed from sunlight, so it may help to do some exercises outside. At last, many of the actions necessary to keep a spine healthy are similar to those used to protect your health in other ways. So protect your back, and the rest of the body will benefit.
28. Which sleeping position is best for our spine according to the passage?
A. B. C. D.
29. What is suggested in paragraph 3?
A. Strengthening muscles around the spine.
B. Repeating a certain movement more.
C. Doing a proper amount of exercise.
D. Staying still in a good position.
30. What can we infer about vitamins?
A. Vitamin B reacts with omega-3 fatty acids.
B. Abundant vitamin D guarantees strong bones.
C. Vitamin D can’t be absorbed without sunlight.
D. Doing push-ups outside increases vitamin D intake.
31. What is the best title for the text?
A. Stay still, stay healthy
B. Good position, good spine
C. Healthy means, healthy spine
D. Proper exercise, proper weight
D
It is the ideal way for traveler to ensure they wake up with the perfect view — a portable Eco-capsule that can be set up anywhere in the world. The egg-shaped pod (独立舱) ensures travelers can camp in the most extreme corners with all the luxury of a hotel room.
Looking like something in a sci-fi movie, the pod is equipped with solar panels, which guarantee solar energy as its power. In this way the tiny home can let you live comfortably wherever you travel. It even has its own shower and toilet, sleeping area for two, and a small kitchen. The 3,306 ib pods can be transported in a sea-container, meaning the possibilities are endless.
Bratislava-based Nice Architects are behind the extraordinary Eco-capsules and said they initially designed them for people who stay in the nature for a long time. However, it quickly became apparent that they could be opened up to the wider public and even used in urban areas to fight against high rent and placed on roofs for studio space or living quarters. The Eco-capsule can serve as a cottage, a pop-up hotel or even as a charging station for electric cars.
The Eco-capsules could even be quickly imported for housing for emergency teams who have been quickly arranged to help with natural disasters. Described by the website as a "Swiss Army knife" — it packs everything you need, the self-contained unit can sustain long periods of time without external resources.
The 86 sqft pods are able to sleep two people for up to year and for those worried about a cold night’s sleep, the Eco-capsule has a thick layer which significantly reduce heat loss.
The pod is designed to cope with extreme weather conditions due to its innovative (创新的) design and materials used. No wonder the Nice Architects are so confident about its future and the producers are receiving heavy orders.
32. Where does the Eco-capsule get power?
A. From a charging station.
B. From a portable battery.
C. From solar panels.
D. From electric cars.

M:Hello. International Friends Club. Can I help you?
W:Oh, hello. I read about your club in the paper today and I thought I’d phone to find out a bit more.
M:Yes, certainly. Well, we’re a sort of social club for people from different countries. It’s quite a new club — we have about 50 members at the moment, but we’re growing all the time.
W:That sounds interesting. I’m British actually, and I came to Washington about three months ago. I’m looking for ways to meet people. Er… what kinds of events do you organize?
M:Well, we have social get-togethers, and sports events, and we also have language evenings.
W:Could you tell me something about the language evenings?
M:Yes. Every day except Thursday we have a language evening. People can come and practise their languages — you know, over a drink or something. We have different languages on different evenings. Monday — Spanish; Tuesday — Italian; Wednesday — German; and Friday — French. On Thursday we usually have a meal in a restaurant for anyone who wants to come.
W:Well, that sounds great. I really need to practise my French.
M:OK. Well, if you can just give me your name and address, I’ll send you the form and some more information. If you join now you can have the first month free.

W: I'm really sorry, but I don't think we have any rooms for tonight. Well, let me check my computer here. Ah! There has been a cancellation for this evening. A honeymoon room is now available.
M: Great. I'll take it.
W: But I'll have to charge you 250 dollars for the night. Well, the best I can give you is a 10% discount plus a ticket for a free breakfast.
M: Thank you very much!

(Text 10)
Good morning. This is Lydia speaking. Now I have no other choice but to call you to complain about the recent purchase of a woolen sweater from your department store on Philip Street, on September 25th. I recently washed the sweater in cool water, following the instructions. However, when I moved it from the machine, the sweater became too large and wrinkled and no longer fit me well. I phoned the store last Tuesday, which was October 12th, and spoke to the shop assistant, a Mr. Morris, who was rather rude on the phone and informed me that I could not get a replacement sweater as it was purchased at a reduced price. Later I phoned again but once more received a cold answer from one of your helpline staff that she could do nothing to help. I felt really upset, for I have been a regular customer of your store for many years and until this incident, I've never had any complaints. I must tell you, I feel disappointed to be treated in such a manner. I demand an apology for this manner. And I think you should have a talk with your workers. I’m expecting you to ring me back as soon as possible.
