Alzheimer’s disease is mostly a condition of old age. Since life expectancy is getting longer
around the world, the number of people affected by the brain disease is expected to increase greatly in some countries by the middle of the century. People with Alzheimer’s often have other medical needs that require the services of numerous health care professionals. The caregivers often have a hard time keeping up with all the medical information.
More and more family members are being called on to help care for loved ones with Alzheimer’s. It is a responsibility for which most people are unprepared. This is why the Hebrew Home, a private non-profit health care group in Riverdale, New York, developed an iPhone and iPad application called “Balance.” The app offers caregivers advice on recognizing symptoms and on feeding, bathing and providing a healthy environment for patients. It can be bought on the Internet for four dollars. David Pomeranz is Hebrew Home’s program development director, and he created “Balance.”
“It is not easy and we hope this will make it a little easier for people,” Mr Pomeranz says. “We are dealing with their family members because, as a philosophy, we feel that we need to care for the caregivers equally in our response to the care needs of the clients themselves, since if the caregivers do not have the proper supports, they simply cannot be caregivers.”
Mr Pomeranz says the “Balance” software is designed to let users organize medical and other information so they can easily keep track of the person’s health. It helps caregivers manage doctor’s appointments and share information with doctors about the patients’ daily emotional changes.
Interest in the app is not limited to the United States. “It has been interesting to see that we have had apps purchased in countries from Egypt to the Netherlands to Greece. It is like the United Nations every day, to see where people are buying this.”
David Pomeranz says software developers are working on a version of “Balance” for mobile devices using the Android operating system.

People feel that they have a right to throw away as much rubbish as they like. They shouldn’t. Rubbish damages the environment and is expensive to dispose of. With household waste, just as poisonous chemicals, governments need to persuade people that they should be responsible for the rubbish they produce.
Waste is also becoming more dangerous. Modern industry produces many things, from coal ash to computers, which are difficult to dispose of properly. The consequences can be serious: in the city
of Dzerzhinsk, in Russia, decades of careless handling of chemical waste has reduced male life expectancy to just 42 years. Rotting waste, meanwhile, produces methane, one of the greenhouse gases, and thus contributes to global warming.
Yet as the special report on the waste business in this week’s issue argues, there are grounds for optimism amid the mountains of rubbish. Environmental concerns have caused dramatic improvements in the way waste is managed in many countries. Recycling is becoming ever more common. Entrepreneurs are brimming with schemes to turn rubbish into electricity or fuel or fertilizer. Environmentalists dream of a world in which almost nothing is wasted.
But it is governments that have the power to turn such visions into reality, and their policies are all over the place. In America, for example, landfills containing household rubbish are subject to tight regulation, while ones filled with harmful sludge(沉淀物) form power plants are less tightly controlled. In Britain landfills are taxed out of the damage they do to the environment. In poor countries many governments often ignore waste altogether. Only 6% of Madagascar’s rubbish is even collected.
To clear up the mess, governments need to hold people and companies responsible for the waste they produce. One way is to work out the cost of disposal and charge firms and households for rubbish collection based on the volume they produce. That helps discourage people from throwing the stuff out, and provides a tax stream to dispose of it when they do. Another is to make laws to push manufacturers to take back and dispose of certain goods when consumers have finished with them. That gives firms a motivation to make their goods easy to recycle or reuse.
As consumers, people hate paying for rubbish disposal. But as voters, they claim to worry about the state of the planet. Such measures are the price of cleaning it up.
28. The short male life expectancy in Dzerzhinsk results from ______.
A. harmful gases from rotting waste
B. poisonous things produced by coal ash
C. rough coping with chemical waste
D. the extreme weather caused by the increase of methane
29. We can know from the examples of rubbish disposal mentioned in Para. 4 that ______.
A. all the optimism of the environmentalists is nothing but an illusion
B. many poor countries always neglect the importance of waste disposal
C. America’s policies on waste disposal are the tightest in the world
D. only governments have the right to make policies of waste disposal
30. Which of the following is the effect of forcing firms to take back and dispose of certain goods?
A. It can help the firms profit from product recycling.
B. It can help the firms reduce the cost of the products.
C. It can help the firms gain more reputation in the market.
D. It can encourage the firms to produce reusable products.
第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
How to overcome an MMORPG addiction
Game addictions are currently the fastest growing class of addictions, with MMORPG addictions being the most common. MMORPG stands for Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game. 31 Here are some measures that you can take to overcome an addiction to
an MMORPG.
32
If you can control the amount of hours that you play, then you are probably not addicted. Some typical symptoms include the following:
• Continuously thinking about a MMORPG
• Missing work, school, or a social activity to devote time to a MMORPG
• Playing a MMORPG for an excessive duration in one sitting (more than 5 hours)
• Psychological distress attributed to lack of game play (feeling upset/angry if you can’t play)
Recognize your addiction.
Even if it is just a game, it is still an addiction that is affecting your lifestyle. In recognizing the problem, you become aware that it needs to be fixed.
Tell your MMORPG friends that you are quitting, whether for a certain time period, or permanently. 33 If you can’t bear parting from your e-friends, keep contact with them via e-mail or chat.
Start your long journey to recovery.
Depending on how addicted you are, and how much time you have to beat your addiction, you have several methods of approach.
• Decrease your overall time playing. What seems to be the most common is to slowly lower your playing time until it is down to a reasonable amount. 34
• Uninstall the MMORPG. If you cannot trust yourself to keep away from loading the game another time, then your best bet is to remove the program from your computer completely.
• Find new hobbies. Look for another hobby like reading or riding a bicycle. 35
Avoid triggering your addiction again.
After your addiction is beaten, keep it at bay. If you’re sure that the addiction won’t come back, whatever you do don’t try the MMORPG again, it is too risky. Also, don’t look for starting another MMORPG.
A. Discover how deep your addiction has become.
B. Determine if you are addicted to an MMORPG.
C. They may give you the emotional support that you need to recover.
D. It is best if you find something that will keep you away from the computer.
E. However, this may not work for people who are unable to control their addiction.
F. It may seem funny or it may seem weird, but MMORPG addiction is growing quite rapidly.
G. They can have very harmful effects and should be treated just as seriously as other addictions.

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Once upon a time in a faraway land, lived two young men, much like many young men you may know today…
The two brothers were likeable, but undisciplined(不守纪律的), with a wild character in them. They behaved badly, which turned serious when they began stealing sheep from the local farmers—a serious crime in this rural place, so long ago and far away. In time, the thieves were caught. The local farmers decided their fate: The two brothers would be branded on the forehead with the letters ST for “sheep thief”. This sign they would carry with them forevermore.
The younger brother was so embarrassed by this branding that he ran away; he was never heard from again.
The elder brother, filled with deep regret, accepted his fate and chose to stay and try to make amends(改过自新) to the villagers he had wronged. At first the villagers had doubts about his behavior and would have nothing to do with him. But this brother was determined to make reparation for his wrongdoing.
Whenever there was a sickness, the sheep thief came to care for the ill with soup and a soft touch. Whenever there was work needing to be done, the sheep thief came to help with a lending
hand. It made no difference whether the person was rich or poor. The sheep thief was there to help. Never accepting pay for his good deeds, he lived his life for others.
Many years later, a traveler came through the village sitting at a sidewalk café eating lunch. He saw an old man with a strange brand on his forehead seated nearby. The stranger noticed that all the villagers who passed the old man stopped to share a kind word, to pay their respects; children stopped their play to give and receive a warm hug.
Curious, the stranger asked the café owner after the old man left, “What does that strange brand on the old man’s forehead stand for?”
“I don’t know. It happened so long ago…” the café owner replied. Then, pausing briefly for a moment of reflection, he continued: “…but I think it stands for ‘saint’.”

Tape scripts for Listening Test
Text 1
M: Did you watch the Oscars on Sunday, Miranda?
W: Yes, of course! I watch them every year! What did you think about what Angelina Jolie did?
M: Well, to be honest, I didn't watch the Oscars. I guess I don't understand why everyone likes it so much.
Text 2
M: Give me a call when you get into town. Til pick you up at the train station.
W: Should I call you at your office?
M: If you get in before 5:30, call the office. Otherwise, call me at home.
Text 3
M: How is your homework coming along?
W: Don’t ask. After I finish writing this paper, I've got to start my research for another paper that’s due next week. And I don’t know when I’ll have time to prepare for my test that’s in two days.
Text 4
W: Jerry, you're leaving for school tomorrow. What can I do to help?
M: Please ask dad where my boxes are.
W: You can use these old suitcases here instead.
Text 5
M: I drove by the Taiwanese snack place, and I noticed that it's closed. I think it went out of business.
W: You can’t be serious! I just ate there yesterday, and the owner didn’t say anything about closing
down.
Text 6
M: As you can see, I have a degree in finance, and I also have three years of work experience at a major Wall Street firm.
W: Yes, but this is not exactly a finance job. It has more to do with marketing and advertising.
M: I see... is it possible that I am in the wrong office? I thought I was applying for a financial manager position.
W: Let me give them a call and see if there was a mistake with the schedule. There might be a marketing expert downstairs with the finance people!
Text 7
W: This place is different from the supermarket we're used to, isn't it? I don't come here very
often because I think the prices are higher than those at supermarkets.
M: There isn’t much of a selection. I mean, there are only one or two brands of each type of product, but that makes it easier to choose things.
W: When I’m not in a hurry, I usually enjoy comparing brands and prices so I can get the most for my money.
M: At this time of night, this is probably the only place open.
W: I’m surprised at the milk prices. They’re much lower than I expected. The prices are competitive with those of the large chains.
M: The prices are low on selected items, but the shop can’t really compete with supermarkets when it comes to most things. At least there are no long lines here.
Text 8
M: So, what do you want to do? Get another drink here, or call it a night?
W: I'll have another beer. Let me buy this round.
M: OK, thanks. So, how was your date the other night?
W: Great! Jim took me to the cinema to see a film. I think he's really nice, and he's got a cool job — he's a television producer, you know. He went to the National Film and Television School, and he's been working at Channel 4 for a year now.
M: Sounds impressive. So, you think it might get serious?
W: Yeah, we have a good connection. I think he's marriage material. We'll see how it goes, but Pm already thinking we could have a long-term future ahead of us.
M: Isn't it a bit early to talk about stuff like that? You've only been out with him twice so far,
W: No, we've been out three times now, and I'm seeing him again tomorrow. It’s not easy finding someone you're attracted to and have good chemistry with. I don't see what's wrong with thinking about the future.
M: Well, I’d be careful if I were you. You should get to know him better before talking about marriage.
Text 9
M: I can’t sleep, Lisa. I’m gonna call in sick tomorrow.
W: You should go to see the doctor. This is the third time this week you've stayed up all night. Are you all right?
M: I'm not sure anymore. I feel fine, and I get tired when it gets late, but then I just stay awake.
W: I'll call Dr. Choi at nine to make an appointment.
M: I’m fine. I’ll come to bed.
W: Please do. You'll only get a couple hours of sleep at most before you have to wake up for work.
M: I think I should stay home.
W: Are you stressed about something?
M: Yes, it's the new director. She is not a pleasant person to work for. Three people have quit in the past two weeks. Everyone walks around the office scared and silent.
W: Why didn’t you tell me this before?
M: I didn’t want to bother you with it. I can’t afford to quit without lining up another job.
W: I'm gonna get that raise starting next month, so you should consider that, too.
M: I did, but that still doesn't leave us anywhere near where we want to be.
W: I know times are tough, but we're gonna get through this together. We just need to work together and see things through to the end.
M: Yeah, I guess the worst that can happen is that I have to keep working for that crazy woman for a while.

Welcome, everyone, to this workshop on student housing. I'll go through the information about types of housing available for the term and the application procedure. Then, if you have any questions, feel free to ask me.
There are two main types of housing for you to choose from: student dorms and the international houses. As of now, there are some spaces available in each type, but they are filling up fast. You should get your application in as soon as possible. Let me explain some of the main features of each type of housing.
The student dorms are for all students. We have men’s dorms and women’s dorms. All the rooms have two beds, two closets, and two desks. There are no cooking facilities in the dorms, but you can buy a meal ticket for the cafeteria.
The international houses are groups of apartments for both foreign and local students. They are organized into language and culture themes, and some of them have rules about speaking only a certain language during meal times. It’s a good way for students to learn other cultures and languages. I think that the Spanish house is full, but there are rooms available in all the other houses.
