Welcome to Olympic National Park!
The park is located in the western state of Washington. It is on the Olympic Peninsula, in the northwest part of the state.
The park covers more than 400,000 hectares. It has several different ecosystems. Visitors will find temperate rainforests, glacier-covered mountains, and almost 120 kilometers of wild coastline.

People
Eight Native American tribes are closely connected to the area. American courts also gave Native American tribes the right to continue their traditional fishing practices in the area. They work with the National Park Service to protect the area’s natural resources.
Places to go

The Elwha Valley is in the central part of the park. It is the Olympic Peninsula's largest watershed. The Hoh River is on the west side of the park. The river is formed
from melted glacial ice on top of Mount Olympus. Hurricane Ridge is a mountain area in the northern part of the park. It is easy to enter, and provides incredible views of the Olympic Mountains.

Dear Preston Thomas,
You were head of the lower school, deputy head, head, and my A-level tutor for economics, and there are a few things I might usefully get off my chest. The boy who secretly gave a candy-shaped laxative(泻药) to the greedy classmate who was stealing everyone’s sweets, causing a hygiene(卫生) crisis in Humanities? That was me. The waste of space who quarreled with another pupil spilled from the classroom on to the gravel pitch and ended up with us chasing each other in circles around the playground, pursued by the supply teacher who never came again? Yep, guilty. I was one of the shadowy figures who were able to let themselves back into the school in the early by means of a stolen skeleton key.
It all seems quite silly now but I am sure that if you had been able to pull together
the various strands and establish a pattern, you would have dealt with it in that calm, authoritative, sensible and humorous way that you dealt with everything. It was the funniest thing. We weren’t scared of you; but at the same time, we thought we shouldn’t mess with you. You said that I should opt for A-level economics, ignoring my protests about inability in maths. You were right.
And then there’s the occasion I carry with me. It occurred in the sixth grade when I commandeered an empty classroom as a changing room and was locked in by schoolmates who, in addition, had stolen my shorts and trousers. That took some explaining when the melee(混战) caught your attention, but you didn’t ask for an explanation. “You don’t stop making mistakes as you get older,” you said with a wry smile. “You just hope to make fewer.”
Hugh

Most people would describe a dollar millionaire as rich, yet many millionaires would disagree. They do not compare themselves with teachers or shop assistants but
with the other parents at their children’s private schools. To count the number of rich people in the world, however, an arbitrary cut-off point is needed, and $1m is as good as any. Capgemini defines anyone with investable property of $1m or more as a “high-net-worth individual”, consultant-speak for rich. By this measure the planet has about 10m millionaires, according to Capgemini and Merrill Lynch, a bank.
Credit Suisse, another bank, uses a less strict definition: a millionaire is anyone whose net assets exceed $1m. That includes everything: a home, an art collection, even the value of an as-yet-inaccessible pension scheme. The Credit Suisse “Global Wealth Report” estimates that there were 24.2m such people in 2015, about 0.5% of the world’s adult population. By this measure, there are more millionaires than there are Australians. They control $69.2 trillion in property, more than a third of the global total.
How did these people grow rich? Mostly through their own efforts. Only 16% inherited their stash. The most common way to get rich is to start a business: nearly half (47%) of the world’s wealthy people are entrepreneurs.
You do not have to be a genius to build a million-dollar business, but it helps if you are intelligent and extremely hard-working. In their book “The Millionaire Next Door”, Thomas Stanley observed that a typical American millionaire is surprisingly ordinary. He does not live in the fanciest part of town—why waste money that you can invest? And his tastes are so plain that you can barely tell him apart from his neighbours. He buys $40 shoes, and his car of choice is a Ford.
Another 23% of the world’s millionaires got rich through paid work, estimates Capgemini. A few vault easily over the million-dollar bar. Gregory Maffei, the boss of Liberty Media, earned $87,095,882 in 2010. The median pay for chief executives at the 456 largest publicly quoted firms in America was $7.23m, according to the Hay Group, a consultancy. But the vast majority are skilled professionals or managers who have been careful with their money. An orthodontist in America makes about $200,000 a year. He may leave medical school heavily in debt, but after a lifetime of earning, saving and investing, he can probably amass $1m.
24. Those with a million dollars don’t consider themselves rich because______.
A. they are too greedy for money to be satisfied
B. they know many who are more wealthy
C. they tend to compare themselves with richer people
D. they care more about their roles as parents
24. Which of the following statements about millionaires is correct?
A. They like collecting works of art and investment
B. They account for one third of the total population
C. Many of them made great fortune overnight
D. Many of them became rich by trade
25. It can be inferred from the passage that to be a millionaire, one has to _____.
A. be wise in money matters B. build up good relationship
C. learn from others D. become skilled professionals
31. The best title of the passage is _____ .
A. The Definition of Millionaire B. What Makes a Millionaire
C. American Millionaire D. Everyone Can Be a Millionaire
D
A biologist once criticized for stealing eggs from the nests of the rarest bird in the world has been awarded the “Nobel Prize” of conservation after his methods saved nine species from extinction.
Professor Carl Jones won the 2016 Indianapolis Prize - the highest accolade in the field of animal conservation - for his 40 years of work in Mauritius, where he saved an endangered kestrel from becoming the next Great Auk.
When the 61-year-old first travelled to the east African island in the 1970s, he was told to close down a project to save the Mauritius kestrel. At the time there were just four left in the wild, making it the rarest bird on Earth. However he stayed, using the techniques of captive breeding(人工繁殖), which involved snatching eggs from the birds’ nests and hatching(孵化) them under incubators, prompting the mothers to lay another set of eggs in the wild.
A decade later, the number of Mauritius kestrels had soared to over 300 and today there are around 400 in the wild. The biologist has also been necessary in efforts
to bring other rare species back from the edge of extinction, including the pink pigeon, echo parakeet and Rodrigues warbler.
Prof Jones, was awarded the $250,000 (£172,000) prize at a ceremony in London.
“As a young man in my 20s, I certainly didn't enjoy the stress and the tension of the criticism I received,” Reflecting on the start of his career, he said the Maurutius kestrel project had been seen as a “dead loss” at the time. In the 1970s there was fierce opposition to the captive breeding techniques, with critics arguing that they were too risky and took the emphasis off breeding in the wild.
Prof Jones has devoted his whole life to his work, only becoming a father for the first time eight years ago, at 53. He said receiving the prize was particularly important to him, because it proved that his work to save birds was right.
32. What does the underlined word “accolade” mean in Paragraph2?
A. return B. level C. honor D. research
33. According to the passage, Great Auk is ________.
A. an endangered bird B. an extinct bird
C. a popular bird D. a fierce bird
34. What can we know from the figures in Paragraph 4?
A. Taking eggs from the nests has worked well.
B. The wild environment for kestrel has changed a lot.
C. Kestrel has adapted to the life in the wild.
D. It’s difficult to protect kestrel.
35. Prof Jones’ idea of taking eggs from the birds’ nests ________.
A. was proved of no use B. was widely accepted
C. was promoted officially D. was criticized by some people
