The old saying that practice makes perfect seems to make no sense when it comes to schoolwork. Many educators today are looking for evidence to support the case for homework, but are coming up empty-handed. “Homework is all pain and no gain.”, says author Alfie Kohn. He points out that no study has ever found a correlation(关联) between homework and academic achievement in elementary school.
Mary Jane Cera is the academic administrator for the Kino School, a private, non-profit kindergarten through 12th grade school in Tucson, Arizona, and she maintains a no-homework policy across all grades. The purpose of the policy is to make sure learning remains a joy, not a thing that discourages social time and creative activity.
Many supporters of homework argue that life is filled with things we don’t like to do, and that homework teaches self-discipline, time management and other non-academic life skills. Kohn
challenges this popular idea; he says that if kids have no choice when it comes to homework, they’re not really exercising judgment, and are instead losing their sense of autonomy(自主).
At the Kino School, Cera says children often choose to take their favorite parts of school home. “A lot of what we see kids doing is continuing to write in journals, practicing music with their friends, and taking experiments home to show their parents.”she says. Surveys of Kino graduates suggest that the early control they are given over their education continues to serve them well into college, and that they feel better equipped to manage their time and approach professors with questions than other students do.
One of the reasons why we continue to assign homework, Kohn says, is our obsession(着迷) with standardized tests. Even if we can agree on the importance of kids doing better on tests, he says, there is no research to suggest that homework is the ticket to success. He says the question isn’t just “How much homework is too much?” but that the quality of assignments needs to be addressed as well.
Wherever the homework debate goes next, it’s worth taking a moment to examine if we’re asking the right questions about our children’s education.
24. Which of the following is Kohn’s idea?
A. Homework teaches students life skills.
B. Homework is not connected with academic achievement in elementary school.
C. Standardized tests are not important in education.
D. The quality of homework is linked to students’ interests.
25. According to the text, Mary Jane Cera________.
A. believes in the connection between homework and academic achievement
B. argues some homework should be assigned to students
C. finds her students can’t finish their homework on time
D. thinks that learning should help develop students’ creativity
26. What can we infer from the fourth paragraph?
A. Students who do more homework study better.
B. Students who refuse homework have better time-management skills.
C. Students who have control over their studies can do better in college.
D. Students who have better professors have better academic performance.
27. What is the attitude of the author towards homework?
A. Opposed. B. Objective. C. Indifferent. D. Supportive.
C
A fish may not be the first creature that comes to mind when co-operation in the animal world is mentioned, but a new study has shown the caring behavior of one sea species. Scientists have found that pairs of rabbitfishes will help and support each other while feeding. While such behavior has been recorded for birds and mammals, it had formerly been thought to be impossible for fishes to exhibit the same features.
“We found that rabbitfish pairs manage their caring activity quite firmly, thus providing safety for their partner that is looking for food,” says Dr. Simon Brandl. “in other words, one partner stays ‘on guard’ while the other feeds – these fishes just watch each others’ back,” Dr. Brandl says. “This behavior is so far unique among fishes and appears to be based on reciprocal cooperation between pair members.”
Reciprocal cooperation, which requires an investment in a partner that is later reciprocated(报答), is supposed to require complex cognitive and social skills — something that fishes had been considered not to have until now.
Dr. Brandl says the research shows clear support and presents interesting evidence for reciprocal support between the rabbitfish pairs.
“There has been a long debate about whether reciprocal cooperation can exist in animals that lack the highly developed cognitive and social skills found in humans and a few species of birds and primates(灵长类),” he said. “By showing that fishes — which are commonly considered to be cold, unsocial, and unintelligent — are able to have reciprocal cooperative systems, we provide evidence that cooperation may not be as special as earlier expected.”
Professor Bellwood says that our opinion of fishes as cold creatures is slowly changing. Our findings should further cause efforts to understand fishes as highly developed organisms with complex social behaviors. This may also require a change in how we study and treat fishes.
28. What does the first paragraph imply?
A. Rabbitfishes almost act like birds and mammals.
B. Fishes don’t belong to the animal world at all.
C. Fishes have the ability to feed each other.
D. The caring behavior was thought impossible for fishes.
29. While one rabbitfish feeds, the other one _________.
A. is protecting its partner from any danger B. is carrying some food for its partner
C. is looking for more food for its partner D. is hiding behind the back of its partner
30. What did people use to think about fishes?
A. They have the same behaviors. B. They show no feelings for others.
C. They have high social skills. D. They support each other all the time.
31. What can we infer from what Bellwood said?
A. We should change our way of eating fish.
B. The behaviors of fishes are difficult to learn.
C. More efforts are needed to understand fish.
D. Our study of social behaviors should be careful.
D
Almost all researches in sleep explain that nightmares are a reaction to negative experiences that happen during waking hours. However, some of them believe that nightmares do have some real benefits. One 2017 study, for example, found that frequent nightmare sufferers rated themselves as more empathetic (共鸣的). They also displayed more of a tendency to unconsciously mirror other people through things like yawning. People who have constant nightmares also tend to think further outside the box on psychoanalysis tasks. Some other researches have found support for the idea that nightmares might be linked to creativity.
People seeking cure for nightmares were not necessarily more fearful or anxious, but rather had a general sensitivity to all emotional experience. Sensitivity is the driving force behind intense dreams. Heightened sensitivity to threats or fear during the day results in bad dreams and nightmares, whereas heightened passion or excitement may result in more intense positive dreams. And both these forms of dreams may feed back into waking life, perhaps increasing suffering after nightmares, or promoting social bonds and empathy after positive dreams.
The effects go further still. This sensitivity overflows over into perceptions and thoughts: people who have a lot of nightmares experience a dreamlike quality to their waking thoughts. And
this kind of thinking seems to give them a creative edge. For instance, studies show that such people tend to have greater creative talent and artistic expression. And people who often have nightmares also tend to have more positive dreams than the average person.
The evidence points towards the idea that, rather than disturbing normal activity, people who are unfortunate in having a lot of nightmares also have a dreaming life that is at least as creative, positive and vivid as it can be distressing and terrifying. What’s more, this imaginative richness is unlikely to be limited to sleep, but also is filled with waking thought and daydreams. Even after people wake up and shake off the nightmare, in other words, a mark of it stays behind, possessing them throughout the day.
32. What do most sleep researchers think of nightmares?
A. They have no advantages at all. B. They make people more empathetic.
C. They can promote humans’ creativity. D. They are a reflection of waking behavior.
33. How can nightmare sufferers probably stop nightmares in theory according to the text?
A. Try to reduce sensitivity to threats or fear.
B. Be more fearful or anxious to nightmares.
C. Avoid excitement as much as possible.
D. Promote social bonds and empathy.
34. What does the underlined word “perception” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Content. B. Awareness. C. Intelligence. D. Determination.
35. What can be the best title for the text?
A. The Empathy of Nightmares B. The Solution of Nightmares
C. The Benefits of Nightmares D. The Tendency of Nightmares

● 39
Treat your friends respectfully when you argue with them.Make your friendship a safe place by not embarrassing your friend or expressing your private disagreements in front of other people.Be publicly supportive and kind to your friends so they know you value your friendship with them.
●Show up,be there, and do what you say you’re going to do
40 So just show your friend the best kind of respect by being on time, keeping promises, and being the one friend they can always count on.That’s the way to truly show respect.

第二节 书面表达
Dear Tom,
I am very happy to hear from you and know that you are so interested in our traditional Chinese poems. Both of the poems you mentioned in your last letter are famous classical poems concerning spring rain from Ancient Tang Dynasty, which are read from one generation to the next.
The first poem you put forward is written by Dufu, in which he wants to convey the message that the rain in spring benefits people secretly without informing us. From this poem, we can feel the likes and appreciation from people for the timely rain. While the second poem you said belongs to Dumu, where he expresses his sadness and regret for not going back to pay respect to his ancestors at their tombs. It is widely acknowledged that Qingming Festival is one of the most important festivals in China. People will visit their ancestors’ graves and clear the weeds there, burn incense, mourn the dead and remember the past days. Although they describe totally different happiness and sorrow from two aspects, these two poems are popular from the past to the present.
I hope you can understand the poems correctly by my explanation and continue studying Chinese poetry. I would like to have more deep communication with you about our cultures. Looking forward to hearing from you soon.
Yours sincerely,
Huahua

Text 10
Have you heard of Jane Goodall? She is a famous scientist who lived with and studied chimpanzees for many years. A chimpanzee is an intelligent African animal that is like a large monkey without a tail. When Jane was young, her father gave her a toy chimpanzee. And she became interested in these animals. In 1957, her love for animals led her to call Dr. Louis Leakey, a famous scientist, who offered her a job as an assistant. Even though she had no college degree, he asked her to become a researcher. She lived with the chimpanzees for over thirty years and wrote down what they did. She published her research. Some people criticized her research. They said she should have given the chimpanzees numbers instead of names. After she left the jungle, she became interested in saving the environment. She opened the Jane Goodall Institute in 1977 to educate people about the environment. She has written many books and still travels around the world, helping children understand the natural world. In 2002, she opened a Jane Goodall Institute in Hong Kong, China. Everywhere she goes, people ask her about her research on chimpanzees.
