It was a village in India. The people were poor. However, they were not unhappy. After all, their forefathers had lived in the same way for centuries.
Then one day, some visitors from the city arrived. They told the villagers there were some people elsewhere who liked to eat frog’s legs. However, they did not have enough frogs of their own,
and so they wanted to buy frogs from other places.
This seemed like money for nothing. There were millions of frogs in the fields around, and they were no use to the villagers. All they had to do was catch them. Agreement was reached, and the children were sent into the fields to catch frogs. Every week a truck arrived to collect the catch and hand over the money. For the first time, the people were able to dream of a better future.
But the dream didn’t last long. The change was hardly noticed at first, but it seemed as if the crops were not doing so well. More worrying was that the children fell ill more often, and, there seemed to be more insects around lately.
The villagers decided that they couldn’t just wait to see the crops failing and the children getting weak. They would have to use the money earned to buy pesticides (杀虫剂) and medicines. Soon there was no money left.
Then the people realized what was happening. It was the frog. They hadn’t been useless. They had been doing an important job-eating insects. Now with so many frogs killed, the insects were increasing more rapidly. They were damaging the crops and spreading diseases. Now, the people are still poor. But in the evenings they sit in the village square and listen to sounds of insects and frogs. These sounds of the night now have a much deeper meaning.
24. Why did the villagers agree to sell frogs?
A. The frogs were easy money.
B. They needed money to buy medicine.
C. They wanted to please the visitors.
D. The frogs made too much noise.
25. What might be the cause of the children’s sickness?
A. The crops didn’t do well.
B. There were too many insects.
C. The visitors brought in diseases.
D. The pesticides were overused.
26. What can we infer from the last sentence of the text?
A. Happiness comes from peaceful life in the country.
B. Health is more important than money.
C. The harmony between man and nature is important.
D. Good old days will never be forgotten.
From Paragraph 1 we learn that the villagers ________.
A. worked very hard for centuries
B. dreamed of having a better life
C. were poor but somewhat content
D. lived a different life from their forefathers
C
The other day, my friend Jane was invited to a 40th birthday party. The time printed on the invitation was 7:30 pm. Jane went off with her husband, expecting a merry evening of wine, food, and song.
By 9:45, everybody was having great fun, but no food had appeared. Jane and David were restless. Other guests began whispering that they, too, were starving. But no one wanted to leave, just in case some food was about to appear. By 11:00, there was still no food, and everyone was completely off their heads. Jane and David left hungry and angry.
Their experience suggests that the words on the printed invitations need to be made clearer. Everyone reads and understands the invitations differently. Most of us would agree that 6:30-8:30 pm means drinks only, go out to dinner afterwards; 8:00 pm or 8:30 pm means possible dinner, but 9:30 pm and any time thereafter means no food, eat beforehand, roll up late.
But this is not always the case. If asked to a students’ party at 6:30 pm, it is unaccepted for guests to appear on time. Being the first to arrive—looking eager—is social death. When my mother is asked to a party at 6:30, she likes to be there, if not on time, then no later than seven. My age group (late thirties) falls somewhere between the two, but because we still think we’re young, we’re probably closer to student-time than grown-up time.
The accepted custom at present is confusing, sometimes annoying, and it often means you may go home hungry, but it does lend every party that precious element of surprise.
28. The underlined words “off their heads” probably mean ________.
A. tired B. crazy C. happy D. encouraging
29. Jane and David’s story is used to show that ________.
A. party invitations can be confusing
B. party-goers usually get hungry at parties
C. people should ask for food at parties
D. birthday parties for middle-aged people are dull
30. For some young people, arriving on time for a students’ party will probably be considered ________.
A. very difficult B. particularly thoughtful
C. friendly and polite D. socially unacceptable
31. What is the general idea of the text?
A. It’s safe to arrive late just when food is served.
B. It’s wise to eat something before going to a party.
C. It’s important to follow social rules of party-going.
D. There’s no need to read invitations carefully.
D

书面表达:
The Mid-Autumn Festival falls on the 15th of the eighth month of our Chinese lunar calendar.
As one of the traditional Chinese festivals, it has been enjoying great popularity in our country. Usually, no matter flow far away or how busy we are, we will try to come home foe the celebration. The moon that night looks the brightest in the whole lunar month. What we love most is the time we enjoy the full moon together. With the beautiful moon up in the sky, we sit together and eat mooncakes and fruit, sharing our stories. In addition to these, traditional acclivities, we have a wider range of choices such as traveling and visiting our relatives or friends.
