My elder brother Steve gave me important lessons in values that helped me grow into an adult after our father died when I was six.
For instance, Steve taught me to face the results of my behavior. Once when I returned in tears from a Saturday baseball game, Steve took time to ask me what had happened. When I explained that my baseball had broken Mrs. Holt's basement window, Steve encouraged me to confess to it. After all, I should have been playing in the park and not in the path between buildings. Although my
knees knocked as I explained to Mrs. Holt, I offered to pay for the window if she would return my ball. I also learned from Steve that personal property (财产) is a sacred thing. After I found a shiny silver pen in my fifthgrade classroom, I wanted to keep it, but Steve explained that it might be important to someone else. I returned the pen to my teacher, Mrs. Davids, and she praised me.
Yet of all the instructions Steve gave me, his respect for life is the most vivid in my mind. When I was twelve, I killed an old brown sparrow in the yard with a BB gun. Excited with my accuracy, I screamed to Steve to come from the house to take a look. I shall never forget the way he stood for a long moment and stared at the bird on the ground. Then in a dead, quiet voice, he asked, “Did it hurt you first, Mark” I didn't know what to answer. He continued with his eyes firm, “The only time you should even think of hurting a living thing is whether it hurts you first. And then you think a long, long time.”I really felt terrible then, but that moment stands out as the most important lesson my brother taught me.
24. What does the underlined word “confess” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. cover. B. admit. C. deny. D. agree.
25. How did the author feel when he faced Mrs. Holt?
A. He felt frightened.
B. He was unwilling.
C. He appeared challenging.
D. He was lighthearted.
26. Which was the most important lesson the author learned from his brother?
A. Care for the property of others.
B. The value of honesty.
C. Responsibility for one's actions.
D. Respect for living things.
27. What technique does the author mainly use to organize the text?
A. Time order. B. Cause and effect.
C. Examples. D. Logical reasoning.

California Condor's Shocking Recovery
California condor
California condors are North America's largest birds, with winglength of up to 3 meters. In the 1980s, electrical lines and lead poisoning (铅中毒) nearly drove them to dying out. Now, electric shock training and medical treatment are helping to rescue these big birds.
In the late 1980s, the last few condors were taken from the wild to be bred (繁殖). Since 1992, there have been multiple reintroductions to the wild, and there are now more than 150 flying over California and nearby Arizona, Utah and Baja in Mexico.
Electrical lines have been killing them off.“As they go in to rest for the night, they just don't see the power lines,” says Bruce Rideout of San Diego Zoo. Their wings can bridge the gap between lines, resulting in electrocution (电死) if they touch two lines at once.
So scientists have come up with a shocking idea. Tall poles, placed in large training areas, teach the birds to stay clear of electrical lines by giving them a painful but undeadly electric shock. Before the training was introduced, 66% of setfree birds died of electrocution. This has now dropped to 18%.
Lead poisoning has proved more difficult to deal with. When condors eat dead bodies of other animals containing lead, they absorb large quantities of lead. This affects their nervous systems and ability to produce baby birds, and can lead to kidney (肾) failure and death. So condors with high levels of lead are sent to Los Angeles Zoo, where they are treated with calcium EDTA, a chemical that removes lead from the blood over several days. This work is starting to pay off. The annual death rate for adult condors has dropped from 38% in 2000 to 5.4% in 2011.
Rideout's team thinks that the California condors' average survival time in the wild is now just under eight years.“Although these measures are not effective forever, they are vital for now,” he says.“They are truly good birds that are worth every effort we put into recovering them.”
28. California condors attract researchers' interest because they ________.
A. almost died out in the 1980s
B. had to be bred in the wild
C. are found only in California
D. are active at night
29. Researchers have found electrical lines are ________.
A. blocking condors' journey home
B. big killers of California condors
C. rest places for condors at night
D. used to keep condors away
30. According to Paragraph 5, lead poisoning ________.
A. makes condors too nervous to fly
B. has little effect on condors' kidneys
C. can hardly be gotten rid of from condors' blood
D. makes it difficult for condors to produce baby birds
31. This passage shows that ________.
A. the average survival time of condors is satisfactory
B. Rideout's research interest lies in electric engineering
C. the efforts to protect condors have brought good results
D. researchers have found the final answers to the problem
D
The Intelligent Transport team at Newcastle University have turned an electric car into a mobile laboratory named “DriveLAB” in order to understand the challenges faced by older drivers and to discover where the key stress points are.
Research shows that giving up driving is one of the key reasons for a fall in health and wellbeing among older people, leading to them becoming more isolated (隔绝) and inactive.
Led by Professor Phil Blythe, the Newcastle team are developing invehicle technologies for older drivers which they hope could help them to continue driving into later life.
These include custommade navigation(导航) tools, night vision systems and intelligent speed adaptations. Phil Blythe explains:“For many older people, particularly those living alone or in the country, driving is important for preserving their independence, giving them the freedom to get out and about without having to rely on others.
“But we all have to accept that as we get older our reactions slow down and this often results in people avoiding any potentially challenging driving conditions and losing confidence in their driving skills. The result is that people stop driving before they really need to.”
Dr Amy Guo, the leading researcher on the older driver study, explains:“The DriveLAB is helping us to understand what the key stress points and difficulties are for older drivers and how we might use technology to address these problems.
“For example, most of us would expect older drivers always go slower than everyone else but surprisingly, we found that in 30mph zones they struggled to keep at a constant speed and so were more likely to break the speed limit and be at risk of getting fined. We're looking at the benefits of systems which control their speed as a way of preventing that.
“We hope that our work will help with technological solutions (解决方案) to ensure that older drivers stay safer behind the wheel.”
32. What is the purpose of the DriveLAB?
A. To explore new means of transport.
B. To design new types of cars.
C. To find out older drivers' problems.
D. To teach people traffic rules.
33. Why is driving important for older people according to Phil Blythe?
A. It keeps them independent.
B. It helps them save time.
C. It builds up their strength.
D. It cures their mental illnesses.
34. What do researchers hope to do for older drivers?
A. Improve their driving skills.
B. Develop driverassist technologies.
C. Provide tips on repairing their cars.
D. Organize regular physical checkups.
35. What is the best title for the text?
A. A New Model Electric Car
B. A Solution to Traffic Problems
C. Driving Services for Elders
D. Keeping Older Drivers on the Road

Changing People's Bad Impression On Us
Some of us have made bad first impressions in front of people we wanted to become good friends with. First impressions are important because they form the foundation on which all future thoughts about someone will be based. __36__ However, there are actions you can take to change people's bad impression of you.
●Apologize immediately. A sincere apology can go a long way because you will prove to everyone that you value their thoughts about you. Tell the people that you didn't intend to offend(冒犯) them and that you wish to correct the situation. Explain the reasons why you acted the way you did in your apology. __37__ Otherwise, it will make others feel uncomfortable that you keep bringing up the past.
●Use humor. When you are around the people you made a bad impression in front of, play a small joke on yourself. Once they know you are not afraid to laugh at yourself, it can break up some of the tension. Remember to only direct humor at yourself. __38__
●Do not make assumptions. After you have made a bad impression, it can be easy to assume that everyone thinks the worst of you. __39__ Instead of assuming what someone thinks about you, explain to her that you feel ashamed about how you acted and ask him how your behavior affected him.
●__40__ In order to overcome a bad first impression, your words and actions in the time to come must be consistently good. With enough time and patience, gaining trust and changing wrong beliefs is possible.
A. Be careful not to overdo it.
B. Pay attention to future behavior.
C. First impressions are usually longlasting.
D. However, things aren't always as bad as they seem.
E. That way you can avoid any more feelings of discomfort.
F. So it's hard to erase a bad first impression from someone's mind.

W: Indeed, your cat is also very lovely. How old is she?
M: About eight years old. Because of her old age, I decide to buy another pet.
(Text 3)
W: This apartment on the first floor looks nice.
M: Yes, the living room is really large.
W: That is a kitchen. A perfect place!
M: Yeah. But to be honest, the bedroom facing the street is a little too noisy.
(Text 4)
W: Can you hear well enough from here?
M: It doesn’t matter. The important points of what he says are here in this book.
W: Well, I’m going to the library after this lecture. I want to get my report finished so that I can go to the cinema.
(Text 5)
W: I had a dream that I swam to Europe and bought cheese. The cheese tasted great.
M: Well, last night I dreamed that I was lost in the forest and when I woke up I was very afraid.
(Text 6)
W: Don’t worry. I’m a computer expert. I promise you can use it within minutes.
M: Thanks. Hey, what about your job? Your boss has moved to the Asian office. Are you going to get promoted?
W: I might not. It’s not a big deal.
M: Huh?
W: I’ve been thinking lately. I don’t plan on working my whole life. Someday, maybe in five years or so, I’m going to quit my job and get out of the stressful life.
(Text 7)
W: Er, do you have any hobbies, Jack?
M: Mm, I like going to the movies if I’m free. I know it’s not much of a hobby but I don’t have a lot of time for hobbies.
W: What are your favorite films?
M: I like thrillers. That’s my favorite.
W: Oh, I’m no good with those. They’re too frightening. I don’t watch any of them because I have my hands over my eyes.
M: So what are your favorite hobbies, Rebecca?
W: I want to take up skiing. I’m starting new hobbies because I haven’t got any at the moment apart from reading and music.
(Text 8)
M: Mum, it’s hot out there. I’m going to take a shower.
W: Another one? Haven’t you already taken two today?
M: Well, I’m sweaty! Why can’t you smell me from over there?
W: You really shouldn’t take more than one shower a day though. You’re wasting water.
M: But water is not that expensive.
W: Water is an important resource! And we don’t have endless supply of it.
M: But if I don’t shower, I’ll smell up the whole house!
W: Well, at least keep it short. If you cut your shower time by two minutes, you can save about 600 litres a month.
M: That much? When did you become such a water expert?
W: Since my friend Michael told me about the water shortages that are happening all over the world.
M: But we’ve always had lots of water in the city.
W: We have water now, but more people on the planet means less water to go around. Think about that as you shower.
(Text 9)
M: Hello, Clark’s Cycle Hire. How can I help you?
W: Oh hello. I saw your ad in the local paper, and I’m wondering what kinds of bike you have, and what your prices are like.
M: Well, we hire out three main types of machine: electric, touring and mountain bikes. Are you likely to be riding off-road, do you think?
W: No, I’ll probably be sticking to roads, so a touring bike would be best.
M: Right, well the rate will be £50 a week, or £14 per day.
W: So it’s a lot cheaper to rent by the week. Is there anything else I’d have to pay?
M: Well, for another £5 we can supply lightweight bags. There’s no charge for things like a pump, or for a lock. It’s a good strong one. Just make sure you don’t lose the key!
W: Hmm. So, if I do go ahead and hire one, how do I pay? By cheque, or would it have to be cash?
M: Neither, I’m afraid. We can only accept credit card bookings.
W: I’ve got a Visa in my name. Would that be OK?
M: Sure.
(Text 10)
W: Today on What’s On Around Town, I’m talking to Chris Jackson, one of the organizers at our local Eversham Tennis Club, who is here to try to persuade you to become members. Chris, are you only interested in talented players or can anyone join?
M: Playing competitive tennis isn’t all we do, although we have had some great successes and our level of teaching is very high. The club is also somewhere people can come to have fun. If you want to play for fun, it’s best to come on a club night.
W: What are club nights?
M: They’re evenings for adult players that include playing tennis matches in a relaxed atmosphere. The club nights are held every Wednesday and Friday from 6 p.m. throughout the summer months. In winter the courts are covered so that play can continue, but there’s an extra fee to cover the cost
of the extra lighting. It is not very much though. On Friday nights food and drinks are available at the end of play.
W: That’s for adults, and what about younger players?
M: We have excellent teaching programmes run by Jack Stevens and his team that cover all ages and include both individual and group lessons. The courses run for 10 weeks at a time and are open to members and non-members. Full payment in advance is preferred.
M: Is there a club night for juniors?
W: Oh, yes. It’s on Thursday all year round. In fact, we’re opening a small shop in the club selling food and cold drinks for this event, but that won’t be until next spring. Any parents, by the way, who’d like to help out with that are very welcome.
