During the First World War, my dad left his homeland of Japan for the USA. At that time, Japan was growing more and more militaristic(军国主义的)and many people were forced to join the army. My father predicted there would be a food shortage , but as he was a clerk in the government in charge of distributing food , we were able to stay fed.
After the war ended, US Gen. Douglas MacArthur ruled Japan. It was common for American soldiers to marry Japanese girls then, but my future husband George wanted to get married back in the US. So, we didn’t become husband and wife until we were reunited in Chicago in 1950. A lot of people said it wasn’t going to work, including my parents. But it did—we were happily married for over 40 years !
