We had two young kids and lived in town. Both my husband and I worked long days. As a result, we didn’t have much time for our kids. They often stayed alone in the house when we were out. They weren’t happy, as you can guess. One day, my husband and I decided to buy a dog for them to make them happier.
Our kids loved that idea. We started searching newspaper, and it wasn’t long before we found puppies for sale. So we decided to hike from one small town to another and found an old farmhouse. Our kids were way ahead of us running as fast as they could to see what their puppy is like. “ She’s under the sofa,” the owner said with a smile.
And that’s when we got our first look at the little dog. My daughter picked up the brown-and-white pup with soft ears and paws. She looked up with the biggest and brownest eyes I’d ever seen, and I said, “ We’ll take her.” And after we took Sadie home, our kids often ran outdoors with her after school. They became so much happier.
Two years ago, my husband and I decided to move to the countryside. On the day we moved, we loaded Sadie in the truck. By the time we reached our new house, Sadie was beyond herself with joy. As we pulled into the drive-way, she gave a bark of excitement. She ran here and there happily. Seeing how
happy she was, I thought of the days our kids were left alone at home. I realized what a big role the dog had played in their lives!
I should thank Sadie. Because of her, our kids had a much happier childhood.

EP Portable Heater
We all know that the cost of heating our homes will continue to be a significant burden on the family budget. Now millions of people are saving on their heating bills with the EP portable heater. With over one million satisfied customers around the world, the new EP heats better and faster, saves more on heating bills, and runs almost silent.
The EP has no exposed heating parts that can cause a fire. The outside of the EP only gets warm to the touch so that it will not burn children or pets.
The EP will not reduce oxygen in the room. With other heaters, you’ll notice that you get sleepy when the heat comes on because they are burning up oxygen.
The advanced EP also heats the room evenly, wall to wall and floor to ceiling. It comfortably covers an area up to 350 square feet. Other heaters heat rooms unevenly with most of the heat concentrated to the center of the room. And they only heat an area a few feet around the heater. With the EP, the temperature will not vary in any part of the room.
The EP comes with a 3-year warranty(保修) and a 60-day, no questions asked, satisfaction guarantee. If you are not totally satisfied, return it at our expense and you money will be given back to you.
Now we have a special offer for 10 days, during which you can enjoy a half price discount and a free delivery. If you order after that, we reserve the right to either accept or reject order requests at the discounted price.

We live in a digital world now, and a student’s technology needs have changed. For the early years, say when you are in primary school, you can get by with no technology at all. Even if you have a computer, it's a good idea to get children familiar with libraries. At this age, trips to the library are like family outings.
As you get closer to middle school, a computer with Internet access becomes more of a necessity. Teachers will often give assignments that require a student to use the Internet for research. After a computer, technology choices for student s become more difficult to make--especially when it comes to cell-phones. K ids will beg their parents for a cell-phone, especially in middle school. For many parents, it's a safety issue: They want to know that their kids can reach them quickly if necessary. For teachers, cell-phones can be used to record lessons when students are absent. But many teachers dislike cell-phones. Some kids send messages or have talks in the class. Sending messages also raises the problem of cheating on exams. More and more schools are now forbidding the use of cell-phones.
Many kids see iPods as necessary things to have. iPods are great for music, but do they do anything good for your children’s education? Maybe they do. That’s the opinion of Doug Johnson, an educator for 30 years. Johnson says that educators should accept all new forms of technology in the classroom, including iPods. “Some do more with their cell- phones than we can do with our laptops, ” he jokes. “I don’t think we should be afraid. The truth is that it ’s easier to change the way we teach than to change the technology habits of an entire generation. ”
32. According to author, primary school children should______ .
A. go to libraries to read more books
B. ask their parents to buy them cell-phones
C. buy iPods to listen to music
D. use the computer and the Internet regularly
33. Why do parents agree to buy their children cell-phones?
A. They want their children to be cool.
B. They think cell-phones be helpful to their study.
C. They want to keep in touch with their children.
D. They want their children to keep up to date.
34. The following are all reasons why many teachers dislike cell-phones EXCEP T_______.
A. cell-phones can be used to cheat on exams
B. cell-phones can be used to record lessons
C. schoolchildren will send messages during class
D. schoolchildren might talk on them during class
35. We can infer from what Doug Johnson said that_______.
A. cell-phones are not useful to students
B. teachers should let students use cell-phones
C. it’s better for teachers to change their teaching methods
D. schoolchildren should follow the trends(潮流) of fashion

六、书面表达 (25分)
Boys and girls, thank you for your listening to my presentation. As you know, with development of economy, people have to face various pressures. They don’t have enough time to attend to the old people in their families, which has become a social problem.
To solve this problem, I designed a kind of household robot, which is intended to take care of old people. It can cook meals at a fixed time which can be adjusted according to individual needs. It can also accompany old people in having a chat, playing chess, and doing exercise. Moreover, it can deal with emergencies. For example, if an old man falls ill suddenly, the robot will call doctors for help.
It would be a great help for us if we own such a robot.
Thank you.
