It was needles that brought Anaelle Regniel to China. She was attracted by the “tiny silver needles that could smooth the pain of a patient” used in acupuncture (针刺疗法).
Following her curiosity, the high school student in France, who was learning Chinese about a decade ago, was eager to find out more about traditional Chinese medicine.
She majored in both Chinese and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) at college. Then, considering TCM to be more developed in Britain, where there were a few private hospitals of TCM, she did an internship (实习医生的工作）at a TCM clinic in Leeds, Britain. That was where she heard about the scholarship of the first Confucius Institute for TCM.
In 2013, she studied Chinese at the Confucius Institute in Leeds for three months,
and won a scholarship. She then started a one-year internship in the Acupuncture Department of Heilongjiang University of Chinese Medicine in Harbin.
“I thought at the beginning that with the knowledge and techniques of acupuncture, it would not be so difficult. After all, acupuncture should be the same everywhere, right?” the 27-year-old woman recalled. Before long, she found with dismay that she was wrong.
Later on, she moved to the Internal Medicine Department, where she learned to give prescriptions (药方). Learning the properties, composition and curative effects of TCM was difficult but useful.
And now she is in her third year of graduate studies supported by the local government in Northeast China's Heilongjiang Province.
“I will go back to France as an inheritor (继承者）and communicator of traditional Chinese culture and help those in need with my knowledge and skills,” Anaelle Regniel shared in a speech at the 2017 Confucius Institute Open Day in Beijing in September.

We are born, we live, we age and we die. This is the natural cycle of human existence. The world record holder for the longest human life is Jeanne Louise Calment of France, who lived to 122 years and 164 days. But what is the secret to a long life?
Human beings are complex, and we live for a very long time, making studies of the process of ageing a serious challenge. Most of the research to date has therefore been done in animals. Two of the favorite species for these kinds "of studies are Caenorhabditis elegans, a very tiny worm, and Mus musculus, the laboratory mouse. The worms generally live for just two or three weeks, while the mice have an upper lifespan of around three years, and both have a lot of genes that are quite similar to our own. W: I guess one of the students hit their head on the diving board, because I saw that someone was sinking to the bottom of the pool.
M: So, what did you do next?
W: I jumped in the pool after their instructor jumped in and brought the kid back to the surface. It was a young girl, and she had swallowed a lot of water.
M: Wow. Did you give her mouth-to-mouth?
W: Of course. Then I told one of the kids to call for an ambulance. (14)
M: Quick thinking!
W: The girl coughed the water up almost immediately, and just like that, it was over. We cleaned the wound and bandaged it up, and the emergency services arrived twenty minutes later. (15)

Hi, students! This is Ashley Jacobs, your student government president. (17) I have some important information for everyone about activities on campus this year. I promise that there will be something fun for everyone to do. Do you like sports? I know everyone is a fan of our football team. And now there are two new teams at school this year. We have added a baseball team and a swim team. (18) Or do you enjoy creative activities? Student government created an art club and a music club for people with artistic abilities. Both of these groups have events all year long. The art club hosts painting nights and trips to the local museum, and the music club goes to see shows at the concert hall. (19) And don’t forget about the school newspaper for all the writers out there! We pass out the paper every week for free on campus. Read it to keep up with all of the school news and activities that I announced. I strongly recommend that you join a student organization. It is an easy way to make good friends and have fun.
