There is no argument here.‎ But when we asked our readers whether they would clone their beloved animals, the responses were split almost down the middle. Of the 228 readers who answered it, 108 would lone, 111 would not and nine weighed each side without offering an opinion.‎ Clearly, from readers’ response, this is an issue that reaches deeply into both the joy and eventual sadness of owning a pet. It speaks, as well, to people’s widely differing expectations over the developing scientific procedure.‎ Most of the respondents who favored the idea strongly believed it would produce at least a close copy of the original; many felt the process would actually return an exact copy. Those on the other side, however, held little hope a clone could never truly recreate a pet, many simply didn’t wish to go against the natural law of life and death.‎ Both sides expressed equal love for their animals. More than a few respondents owned “the dog/cat in the world”. They thought of their pets as their “best friend”, ‘‘a member of the family,” “the light of my life.” They told moving stories of pets’ heroism, intelligence and selfless devotion.‎ Little wonders the loss is so disturbing---and the cloning so attractive. “People become very lose to their animals, and the loss can be just as hard to bear as when a friend or family member dies,” says Gary Kowalski, author of Goodbye, Friend: Healing Wisdom for Anyone Who Has Ever Lost a Pet. “For me, cloning feels like an attempt to turn death away... It’s understandable. Death is always painful. It’s difficult to deal with. It’s hard to accept.”‎ But would cloning reduce the blow? This question seemed to be at the heart of this problem.‎ ‎24. So far as the cloning of pets is concerned, a recent survey shows that, of all pet owners, .‎ A. a lot more of them are for it ‎ B. a lot more of them are against it C. very few of them are willing to tell their opinions ‎ D. about half of them are for it and the other half against it ‎25. While talking about the respondents from the readers, the expression “eventual sadness of ‎ owning a pet” refers to .‎ A. the troubles one has to deal with in keeping a pet B. the high cost of owning a pet C. the death of one’s pet D. the dangers involved in the cloning of a pet ‎26. From what Gary Kowalski says, we can know that he .‎ A. has never thought about the problem of cloning B. is in favor of the idea of cloning pets C. is going to write another book on pets D. is all against the cloning of pets ‎27. What is the key question at the heart of the problem of cloning pets?‎ A. Can cloning make the pain one suffers less when a pet dies?‎ B. Can pet owners afford the cost of cloning?‎ C. Does cloning go against the law of nature?‎ D. How reliably does cloning produce an exact copy of one’s pet?‎ ‎【答案】24. D 25. C 26. B 27. Of the 228 readers who answered it, 108 would lone, 111 would not and nine weighed each side without offering an opinion可知,228个受访者人当中,108人表示赞成克隆,111人表示反对克隆。 根据第三段中both the joy and eventual sadness of owning a pet,关键词both...and…,可知,养宠物最终的悲伤就是宠物的死亡,给养宠物者所带来的伤害。 For me, cloning feels like an attempt to turn death away... It’s understandable. 根据最后一段would cloning reduce the blow? A。‎ C ‎20 years ago, a couple of ecologists, Daniel Janzen and Winnie Hallwachs, convinced Del Oro, a large orange juice producer, to donate part of their forestland to a national park in exchange for the right to dump (倾倒) massive amounts of orange peels on a 3-hectare piece of land within the national park, at no cost. Dealing with tons of waste peels usually involved burning them or paying to have them dumped at a landfill, so the proposal was very attractive.‎ A year after the contract was signed, Del Oro dumped around 12,000 tons of sticky orange waste in the land. However, another juice company and rival of Del Oro challenged the deal in court, arguing that their competitor was “polluting the national park”. They ended up winning, and the deal between Del Oro and the national park fell through. The 3-hectare piece of land virtually covered with fruit waste was completely forgotten.‎ Then, in 2013, Timothy Treuer, a scientist at Princeton‎ ‎University visited that piece of land 15 years earlier. What he found shocked him. “It was completely overgrown with trees and vines,” Timothy Treuer recently said, “the difference between fertilized and unfertilized areas was visually surprised us a lot! We needed to come up with some really good standards to evaluate exactly what was happening there.”‎ To confirm that the fruit waste was responsible for the revival of plant life, Treuer and his team spent months picking up samples, analyzing and comparing them. They found “dramatic differences between the areas covered in orange peels and those that were not. The area fertilized by orange waste had richer soil, greater tree-species richness and greater forest coverage. In a sense, it’s not just a win-win between the company and the local park—it’s a win for everyone.”‎ The effect the orange peels had on the land is probably not that surprising to people familiar with composting (堆肥), but what is shocking is that a judge actually called this particular example polluting the national park and stopped it from going forward. Now that Timothy Treuer’s study has received worldwide attention, this type of polluting is being seriously considered as a way of bringing tropical forests back to life.‎ ‎28. Why was the deal proposed by the ecologists attractive to Del Oro?‎ A. It would make farmers produce more oranges.‎ B. It would help deal with the orange peel waste for free.‎ C. It would increase the production of orange juice.‎ D. It would save much space for the orange juice producer.‎ ‎29. What does the underlined phrase ‘‘fell through” in the second paragraph?‎ A. became unbelievable B. failed to happen C. made something possible D. changed the course of an event ‎30. What did Treuer find when he visited the land covered with orange waste?‎ A. The peel waste was hard to break down there.‎ B. Del Oro continued dumping peel waste there.‎ C. The peel waste enriched the soil of the land.‎ D. The whole national park was polluted.‎ ‎31. What’s the best title of the passage?‎ A. Orange peel waste found its way to reshape the national park.‎ B. A couple of ecologists devoted themselves to restoring the forest.‎ C. A casual attempt led to a series of expected magic results.‎ D. Orange peel waste brought a forest back to life.‎ ‎【答案】28. B 29. B 30. C 31. 20 years ago, a couple of ecologists, Daniel Janzen and Winnie Hallwachs, convinced Del Oro, a large orange juice producer, to donate part of their forestland to a national park in exchange for the right to dump (倾倒) massive amounts of orange peels on a 3-hectare piece of land within the national park, at no cost. 根据第二段中another juice company and rival of Del Oro challenged the deal in court, arguing that their competitor was “polluting the national park”.(另一家果汁公司和Del Oro的竞争对手在法庭上挑战了这笔交易,认为他们的竞争对手正在“污染国家公园”) They ended up winning, and the deal between Del Oro and the national park fell through.(他们最终赢了,德尔奥罗和国家公园之间的交易告吹了。) They found “dramatic differences between the areas covered in orange peels and those that were not. The area fertilized by orange waste had richer soil, greater ‎ tree-species richness and greater forest coverage. Now that Timothy Treuer’s study has received worldwide attention, this type of polluting is being seriously considered as a way of bringing tropical forests back to life. D。‎ D The Australian beach town of Byron Bay has a traffic problem, especially during holidays, when local streets are full of cars. But now it’s changed. The world’s first fully solar-powered train runs on a restored(修复)train line that was out of use for more than a decade.‎ The solar systems on the roof of the train send power to a set of batteries that replace one engine; the other engine is still in place and can provide backup power in an emergency. As the train brakes, it generates more electricity, like a hybrid car. At a train station, the train can be plugged in to pull more power from solar systems on the platform roof. If there’s a long period without sun---somewhat unlikely in this part of the world---the train can also plug in to get renewable energy from the local electricity supply.‎ ‎“The large solar systems on the platform roof coupled with the solar systems on the train roof produce more solar energy per day than is required to operate an hourly return service,” says Holmes, development director of the nonprofit Byron Bay Railroad company, which runs the train. With one full charge, the train can make 12 to 15 trips.‎ Volunteers fully restored the train to its old condition to attract more riders, which should take more cars off city streets of the beach town. The train fits 100 seated passengers, with room for more to stand, and also has a luggage room for bikes and surfboards. A ride costs a little more than $2.‎ The nonprofits thinks it’s a model that could be replicated (复制)elsewhere. “Our service has had no government support or funding at all, but for this to be replicated or improved upon, the key is for government to work with enterprises on the program.” Holmes says. “Our service provides an example of how the sun’s energy can be used for sustainable transport solutions.”‎ ‎32. Why is the solar train brought into use in Byron‎ ‎Bay?‎ A. To attract visitors. B. To reduce traffic.‎ C. To fight pollution. D. To use solar energy.‎ ‎33. Where does the train get energy on sunless days?‎ A. From its engines. B. From a hybrid car.‎ C. From the platform roof. D. From the local electricity supply.‎ ‎34. How does Holmes feel about solar energy equipment?‎ A. It is labor-saving. B. It is easily operated.‎ C. It is time-consuming. D. It is power guaranteed.‎ ‎35. What can be inferred about the solar-powered train from the last paragraph?‎ A. It may be popularized in the future.‎ B. More scientific research should be done about it.‎ C. It could be of little use in solving energy problems.‎ D. Financial support from the government is badly needed.‎ ‎【答案】32. B 33. D 34. D 35.
