Pizza is a pretty common treat, but where did it start? Here are three things you probably don’t know about pizza.
1: Pizza’s Origins Are Half-Baked.
The Neapolitans in Italy are proud of saying they invented pizza, but it’s probably more accurate to say they perfected it. The idea of putting toppings on a flatbread and baking it started in the 6th century B.C. But the people of Naples were the first to put the tomato on a flatbread in the 16th century. From its start, pizza was the food for the poor, as it was cheap, filling and easy to eat
on the run. In Italian, the word “pizza” refers to anything that is made and then pressed flat.
2: Pizza Margherita Is Not Exactly a Symbol of Italy.
It is said that one day in 1889, a local baker named Raffaele Esposito created three pizzas for Queen Margherita when she was on a tour of Italy. The queen loved the version that had the tomato, basil and mozzarella cheese, and it just happened to match the colors of the Italian flag. So Esposito named the pizza after her.
But Scott Wiener points out that Italy was unified in name only in 1889 so it was unlikely any Neapolitan baker would want to celebrate the “Northern conqueror” Further, the letter of gratitude for the pizza from the royal household that Pizzeria Brandi displays appears to be a fake and may just have been a marketing strategy.
3: Hawaiian Pizza Invented by a Canadian.
Sam Panopoulos, from Greece, originally moved to Canada at the age of 20. In 1962, he decided to put some ham and pineapple on a pizza at one of his restaurants in Ontario.
“We just did it for fun to see how it was going to taste,” he told the BBC in 2017. Panopoulos named it the Hawaiian pizza after the brand of the canned pineapple he used. The mixture of sweet and savory toppings became popular with a certain part of the pizza-loving public. The inventor died in 2017.
21. Who was pizza first made for?
A. People who were very busy. B. People who were running away.
C. The poor people who could afford it. D. Soldiers.
22. What is Pizzeria Brandi’s purpose of displaying the letter?
A. To show honor for Queen Margherita.
B. To hatch a marketing plot.
C. To prove the pizza’s relation with the royal family.
D. To tell the world Pizza Margherita is exactly a symbol of Italy.
23. The name of the Hawaiian pizza came from .
A. another brand of food B. a Canadian restaurant
C. the founder’s own interest D. its unique Hawaiian flavor
B
If Albuquerque Police Officer Ryan Holets had his way, this story would never have got so
much attention. CNN would not have learned that Holets, while on duty, had agreed to adopt a baby from a homeless drug addict.
Holets values his privacy(隐私)and didn’t do it for the attention. He did it just because he knew it was the right thing to do.
On Sept. 23, Holets responded to a call about a possible theft from a convenience store in Albuquerque. By the time he arrived, the thief was no longer there, but Holets spotted a woman in a grassy area behind the store about to inject a needle into her companion’s arm. The woman, Crystal Champ, was eight months pregnant.
After a short conversation, he learned Champ longed for her child to go to a good family. Holets offered to do just that.
When Sergeant Jim Edison learned what Holets did, he was floored. In his 10 years as a police officer, he has seen many “heroic acts” but none like what Holets did, Edison said.
Edison awarded Holets for his outstanding service for the city, but felt that wasn’t enough. It’s his job to reward his officers and encourage them to do the right thing, so Edison signed Holets up to do an interview for CNN’s “Beyond the Call of Duty” series without telling him.
“Every day Edison calls me to ask for forgiveness,” Holets said laughing. “And I keep assuring him that we’re fine. We didn’t quite realize it would get this response, and neither did he. But we all realize it’s a really good thing, and some really good things can come of it.”
One of Holets’s conditions when he agreed to CNN’s interview was that his superiors would not set up a GoFundMe page for his family. “We don’t want anybody to say we’ve used this occasion to enrich ourselves,” Holets said. He instead urges those who want to offer support to donate to a local drug recovery center or adoption organization.
24. What was Holets doing when he met Champ?
A. He was on his way home. B. He was looking into a theft.
C. He was making a telephone call. D. He was buying things in a store.
25. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 7 refer to?
A. the encouragement B. the telephone
C. the interview D. the forgiveness
26. Why did Edison call Holets to ask for forgiveness?
A. He did wrong to Holets.
B. He didn’t keep his promise.
C. Holets didn’t get promoted as expected.
D. He made Holets become the focus of attention.
27. What did Holets expect people to do?
A. Raise money for families like his.
B. Support the police’s routine work.
C. Make donations to adoption organizations.
D. Set up an organization to help the homeless.
C
Indonesia is home to four of the world’s worst polluted rivers and ranks second when it comes to plastic waste. Since single-use packaging is a large contributor to the problem, Evoware, an Indonesian-based company decided to handle that issue first. And now a kind of edible(可食用的)packets has been invented.
After investigating various material options, the company settled on seaweed. Unlike com, commonly used for containers, seaweed does not require resources like water, or large amounts of space. According to Evoware, as much as 40 tons of seaweed can be grown in an area the size of a baseball field. It also helps absorb harmful greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide. Since Indonesian farmers already harvest more seaweed than they can sell, it is easy for the company to find the material.
Though they will not make public their production process, Evoware announces the seaweed packaging contains no chemicals and is safe to consume. In addition to wrapping fast food items, it can also be used to house things like instant noodle seasoning(调味品)and instant coffee.
Though the edible wrappers may not have any taste, the same cannot be said about the single-use cups that the company has also invented. The single-use cups that can be used to serve cold drinks are available with the taste of orange and green tea.
While replacing plastic with the seaweed products may seem like a no-brainer to most of us, it is a hard-sell in Indonesia. According to Christian, “The awareness, understanding, and sense of urgency to minimize the use of single-use plastic are still very low.” Also a factor is the cost, which is higher than using plastic.
Hopefully, Evoware will succeed in convincing Indonesians, and people worldwide, that
switching to their products will go a long way in protecting our beautiful planet.
28. What is Evoware’s purpose of inventing eatable packages?
A. To make full use of seaweed. B. To make generous profits.
C. To attract more customers. D. To reduce plastic pollution.
29. What can we learn about seaweed from paragraph 2?
A. It is easy to get. B. It breaks down easily.
C. It is hard to harvest. D. It can grow in a baseball field.
30. How are single-use cups different from seaweed packaging?
A. They are beautiful. B. They have different tastes.
C. They are in various shapes. D. They are environmentally friendly.
31. What stops the seaweed products being widely used?
A. The high cost. B. The terrible taste.
C. The lack of seaweed. D. The complex production process.

The researchers from the University of Liverpool have now spotted smoke rings in the ocean which have the power to suck in the small marine creatures and have the potential to carry them at high speed for a long distance.
In the ocean, the vast eddies(旋涡) span up to hundreds of kilometers across and are a common event relatively. But now, to the researchers’ surprise, these giant eddies(which were named “smoke rings” later)were spotted spinning(旋转)in opposite directions, travelling up to ten times the speed of the normal eddies. The smoke rings are cut in half by the sea surface due to which the researchers could see the two ends of the half ring on the sea surface.
Described in a research paper published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, the smoke rings were discovered by analyzing sea level measurements together with sea surface temperature images from the same time and place taken from satellites.
“What we found was a pair of eddies spinning in opposite directions and linked to each other so that they traveled together all the way across the Tasman Sea, taking six months to do it,’’ shared Chris Hughes, lead author of the study published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters. “The smoke rings require an area of calm water to expand, which itself is quite unusual. I have looked at other areas of other oceans but I have only seen them in the oceans around Australia, plus one in the
South Atlantic,” he added.
The smoke rings require a calm water area to form, which is quite unique in itself. The team said that there are still a lot of things that they need to understand about how these linked eddies turn into one. They guess that these eddies might join up when two smoke rings hit each other in the ocean.
32. What has made the researchers amazed?
A. The vast eddies can span up to hundreds of kilometers.
B. The giant eddies spin in opposite directions.
C. The smoke rings come into being on the sea surface.
D. The smoke rings have killed so many marine creatures.
33. How did the researchers find the “smoke rings”?
A. By taking a close look at the sea surface.
B. By observing the phenomena in the sky.
C. By analyzing the data from the satellites.
D. By measuring the sea level movements.
34. What does Chris Hughes’ words imply in the text?
A. The Tasinan Sea is too rough to create smoke rings.
B. The birth of smoke rings needs a unique setting.
C. No one actually knows where the eddies form.
D. Smoke rings appear across the South Atlantic.
35. What is the best title for the text?
A. Smoke rings threatening marine creatures.
B. Oceans near Australia influenced by smoke rings.
C. The formation of smoke rings.
D. Smoke rings discovered in the ocean.
