More than one billion young people risk damaging their hearing through over use of smartphones and other audio devices(音频设备), the UN warned Tuesday, put forward new safety standards for safe volume levels.
① In order to protect their hearing from harm, the World Health Organization and
International Telecommunications Union announced a non-binding(非强制性的)international standard for
12
the production and use of audio devices.
② Around half of those between the ages of 12 and 35, or 1.1 billion people, are at risk because of “listening to loud sounds for a long time, including music they listen to through personal audio devices,” the UN health department said.
Recently, about five percent of the world population, including 34 million children, suffer from hearing loss. ③ WHO considers a volume above 85 decibels for eight hours or 100 decibels for 15 minutes as unsafe.
WHO is calling for parental as well as automatic volume controls on audio devices to prevent dangerous use. ④
While some smart phones and other audio devices already offer some of these features, the UN would
like to see a uniform standard used to help protect against hearing loss.
“Think of it like driving on a highway, but without a speed limit,” Shelly Chadha of the WHO told reporters in Geneva. “What we’ve suggested is that your smart phones should be fixed a measurement system which tells you how much sound you’re getting and tells you if you are going over the limit.”

Bad news came. Antonio’s ships crashed and he lost everything. He couldn’t return Shylock’s money on time but let him take one pound of his flesh.
Portia, Bassanio’s wife, dressed up as a man came to the court. The young judge Balthasar was actually Portia. Nobody recognized her. She told Shylock to have pity on Antonio. But Shylock refused. He
insisted he just wanted the penalty( 罚 金 ) written in the contract. Portia read the contract. She allowed
12
Shylock to get his pound of flesh.
Shylock was very happy. He held his knife and told Antonio to get ready. “Wait! There is something else.” claimed Portia.
“What?” Shylock wondered.
“Well,” said the young judge, “I have read the contract carefully. It says 'one pound of flesh'. You can take your pound of flesh, but you may not take one drop of his blood. Or the duke will take everything you own !”
Shylock didn’t want to give everything he owned to the duke. He said he would take the money. Bassanio was happy to give him the money.
12
“Wait!” Portia said again, “Shylock shall not take the money. It was not written in the contract. You must take the flesh, no more, no less. And not one drop of blood must fall.”
Shylock understood he would get nothing. He felt bad and decided to leave.
“Wait.” said Portia, for the third time. “The law of Venice says that if you plan to kill a citizen of Venice, you will lose everything that you own. Half of what you have will belong to the person you tried to kill, and the other half will belong to the duke. Besides this, the Duke is the only person who can save you from death if he decides to have mercy on you. Therefore, ask the Duke for mercy.”
“No!” shouted Shylock. “If you take everything I own, you are taking my life anyway.”
Antonio said he did not want half of everything that Shylock owned. He just wanted to borrow some money to do business. Then he would give it to Shylock’s daughter and her husband after Shylock died.
The duke said that if Shylock did not agree to do what Antonio said, he would take back his pity, and
Shylock would die.
Shylock realized he had no choice but to agree.

Before realizing it, I have been in Japan for nearly 4 months. My stay in Japan
12
has been wonderful, exciting, busy, tiring, yet amazing. I am an exchange student, looking for useful information about life experiences in Japan.
I suppose that now I’m living a life just like that of the average Japanese high school student. It is very different from what I am used to in the U.S. Here, getting up by 6 am, using the public transportation for nearly 2 hours to get to school, attending school for 6 periods, taking part in after-school activities for 3 hours or so, spending another 2 hours on the way home, finally going to sleep at 11 or 12 pm.
This is the typical plan of my day, and I have found out that at least half of my classmates share a similar life. Yet they seem fine with it, although they try hard to avoid falling asleep in class.
I am recently taking English, Physics, Japanese, P.E, Computer Labs, World History, Health. I’m giving up Japanese and physics. They can help me learn about Japanese culture, but for me the lectures are too hard to understand.
At school, club activities are really important to the students. My school requires everyone to join a
12
club. I choose to be the leader of the football team.
Usually we practice 6 or 7 times per week: 3 hours on school days, and 4 to 6 hours on weekends. When it rains, we often practice in the rain. Some sports practice for 8 hours every day during summer with seldom breaks and camps. Also, unlike American schools, the sports season here usually lasts for one year. One often stays in the same club and never changes.
It is really challenging and busy to study at a Japanese high school, but the exchange students usually have the choice to make adjustments(调整)in order to make time for exploring Japan and experiencing the
Japanese lifestyle. I hope I could meet more people and learn more next year.
42. According to the passage, Japanese high school students .
A. don’t take public transportation B. spend little time on their way home
C. generally have no enough sleep D. are not required to join club activities
43. Why has the writer stopped studying Japanese and Physics?
A. The writer can’t understand the lectures. B. They can’t attract the writer’s interest.
C. The writer is too busy to study them carefully. D. They don’t help the writer learn about Japan.
44. The ideas of the passage are organized through .
A. Time order B. General to specific to general
C. Space order D. Specific to general to specific
45. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. The differences between American and Japanese students. B. How to achieve good grades in a Japanese high school.
C. Japanese students’ important and strict club activities. D. The life of an exchange student in Japan.

Friendships are of value for us. A research center asked 2007 people to name one or two the most important things about themselves. Friends come before homes, jobs, clothes and cars. However, the better friends you are, the more opposites you’ll face.
12
But the good news is that most broken friendships can be repaired.
Put down your pride.
It wasn’t easy, but that’s what Denise did when a friendship was damaged. Denise was asked to look after her friend Nora’s two young daughters when she was away for nearly four months. She was happy to accept it. However, when Nora returned, she never said thanks to Denise.
At first, Denise made up her mind not to speak to Nora any more. Then she decided to put down her pride and let her friend know how she felt. Nora admitted that she’d been blind to what her friend had done for her. Today she says, “I would never have found out what happened if Denise hadn’t called me on it.”
Say sorry when you’re wrong.
Apologize to your friends when you are wrong. In many cases, a simple misunderstanding can cause arguing. “We don’t think clearly when we’re arguing, it is meaningless, so don’t argue,” says Lang.
See things from your friend’s point of view.
Researchers interviewed 53 adults who each had many friendships lasting many years. They find tolerance (容忍) is key to keeping friendships. Learn to put yourselves in your friends’ shoes.
Accept that friendships change.
Friendships change as our needs and lifestyles change. You should realize this fact.
Making friends sometimes seems easy, but it’s hard to keep the connections strong during the natural ups and downs. Consider friendship an honor and a gift, and try to keep it on.
