Sharon , Aged 22
The most important thing to keep in mind when going into high school is to be yourself . Besides, I don’t know what your middle school was like, but high school teachers will not care about things such as how much homework you already have in one night. It’s best to just learn to deal with things and manage your time wisely so you can achieve everything you need to.
Frank, Aged 21
I think almost every kid feels both nervous and excited before their first day. You will probably love it. I know I did. You should join some sports or activities that will make your high school experience more enjoyable. Good luck!
Eddie, Aged 20
When I started high school I was really nervous, especially since I had been homeschooled all through middle school and didn’t really know anyone. I suppose the best advice would be to just relax. The first couple of days can be a little bit hard, but things will become easier before you know it.
David, Aged 19
I’m not going to lie. The first day is kind of frightening (令人恐惧的). But you’ll get used to it. Don’t be afraid of anyone; upperclassmen will pick on you more if you let them know you’re afraid. Just take it easy. Making some friends and staying with them will greatly help you get used to high school quickly. After the first week it’s really not bad at all. Don’t worry.
21. What can we infer from Sharon about high school?
A. Teachers are quite strict.
B. Students often stay up at night.
C. Teachers provide little care for students.
D. Students should make good use of their time.
22. How did Eddie feel on his first day of high school?
A. Excited. B. Bored. C. Worried. D. Relaxed.
23. Who mentions the importance of friends?
A. Frank. B. David. C. Sharon. D. Eddie.

The English language has a lot of words which can be used in many different ways and in many different expressions.
One such example is the word matter. In fact, matter can mean just about anything. It could be one of the most useful words in the English language.
Let’s get to the heart of the matter — a matter of principle (原则).
If someone says that you owe (欠) him $50, but you don’t, a friend might say, “Well, you could pay him the $50. It’s not that much money. Then you won’t have to hear him say it anymore.” But if you do not owe him the money, do not pay him the money. It’s a matter of principle.
There is another way to use the word matter. But be careful with your choice of words.
If you ask someone, “What’s the matter?”, it shows you are worried about the other person. But saying, “What’s the matter with you?” has a completely different meaning. And it usually sounds rude (粗鲁的). In fact, when you say, “What’s the matter with you?”, you are suggesting that the person did something wrong or stupid.
Another expression that could sound rude is to say, “It doesn’t matter to me.” Here, it depends on the context, and how you say it. Let’s say you tell someone that a friend just got a big raise at work. That person answers with, “It doesn’t matter to me.” Here, it means he or she does not care. And it sounds rude.
But saying, “Oh, you pick where we eat dinner. It doesn’t matter to me.” does not
sound rude. In this situation, “it doesn’t matter” shows you are easy-going (随和的).
No matter how you look at it and what you say, matter is a very useful word. And it’s only a matter of time before you will become an expert on the use of matter.
24. We can infer from the text that the word matter _____.
A. has a wide use B. can mean money
C. is the most used English word D. has the most different expressions
25. What is the author’s suggestion in Paragraph 4?
A. Every penny counts. B. Stick to what is right.
C. Follow your friend’s advice. D. Be careful when making friends.
26. The underlined word “context” in the text probably means _____.
A. choice B. person C. situation D. answer
27. The author develops the text mainly by _____.
A. using examples B. giving instructions
C. describing his experiences D. discussing research findings

Frank Woolworth was born in Rodman, New York., in 1852. His family were very poor farmers, and there was never enough to eat. Frank decided he did not want to be farmer. He took a short business course, and went to work as a salesman in a large city.
Woolworth realized he had a natural skill for showing goods to attract people’s interest, but he soon learned something more important. One day his boss told him to sell some odds and ends (小商品 ) for as much as he could get. Frank put all these things on one table with a sign which said FIVE CENTS EACH. People fought and pushed to buy the things and the table was soon cleared.
Soon afterwards, Woolworth opened his own store., selling goods at five and ten cents. But he had another lesson to learn before he became successful. That is, if you want to make money by selling low-price goods, you have to buy them in large quantities directly from the factories. Once, for example, Woolworth went to Germany and placed an order for knives. The order was so large that the factory had to keep running 24 hours a day for a whole year. In this way, the price of the knives was cut down by half.
By 1919, Woolworth had over 1000 stores in the US and Canada, and opened his first store in London. He made many millions and his name became famous throughout the world. He always run his business according to strict rules, of which the most important was: “ THE CUSTOMER IS ALWAYS RIGHT.”

About ten men in every hundred suffer from color blindness in some way. Women
are luckier; only about one in two hundred is affected in this matter. Perhaps, after all, it is safer to be driven by a woman!
There are different forms of color blindness. In some cases a man may not be able to see deep red. He may think that red, orange and yellow are all shadows of green. Sometimes a person cannot tell the difference between blue and green. In rare cases an unlucky man may see everything in shades of green - a strange world indeed.
Color blindness in human beings is a strange thing to explain. In a single eye there are millions of very small things called “cones”. These help us to see in a bright light and to tell difference between colors. There are also millions of “rods”, but these are used for seeing when it is near dark. They show us shape but no color.
Some insects have favorite colors. Mosquitoes prefer blue to yellow. A red light will not attract insects, but a blue lamp will. In a similar way human beings also have favorite colors. Yet we are lucky. With the aid of the cones in our eyes we can see many beautiful colors by day, and with the aid of the rods we can see shapes at night. One day we may even learn more about the invisible colors around us.
32. The passage is mainly about _____________.
A. color and its surprising effects.
B. women being luckier than men
C. danger caused by color blindness
D. color blindness
33. According to the passage, with the help of the “cones”, we can_______________.
A. tell different shapes B. see in a weak light
C. kill mosquitoes D. tell orange from yellow
34. Why do some people say it is safer to be driven by women?
A. Women are more careful.
B. There are fewer color-blind women
C. Women are fonder of driving than men.
D. Women are weaker but quicker in thinking.
35. Which of the statements about the color- blind is true?
A. Not all of them have the same problem in recognizing color.
B. None of them can see deep red.
C. None of them can tell the difference between blue and green.
D. All of them see everything in shades of green.

书面表达
Dear Li Ping,
The National Day is over. We spent a happy 7-day long leave.
My parents and I went to the countryside not far away form our home to have a two-day trip by bicycle. We set out at 7 o’clock in the morning on October 1. My dad and I took different kinds of things for our picnic. Having got there, we began to fish. After that we enjoyed my mum’s cooking, which was very delicious. Cycling there
made myself completely relaxed. The beautiful scenery and warmth with my parents made me happy. Besides, we stayed in my uncle’s and had a small family party there at night. We returned the next afternoon. This was a great holiday for me.
Hope to hear from you soon.
Yours,
Wang Fei
