North and South is a British television drama produced by BBC One. The main
character, Margaret Hale, is from southern England and moves with her family to the
North.（17）The series follows the family as it adjusts to their new town’s customs and social issues. The Hales met another family of lower class, and they had to rethink about many
things. The show is based on the Victorian novel of the same name, written by
Elizabeth Gaskell in 1855. （18） North and South was turned into a TV series by Sandy
Welch in 2001 and is directed by Brian Percival. Although Sandy made small changes to
the story, the plot remained mostly true to the novel. Filming began in 2004 in the Scottish
city of Edinburgh, which still has much of its Victorian architecture. （19）Even though
the BBC didn’t advertise the show as much as it did for other shows, it quickly became
a huge success. （20）The reaction was a surprise to the BBC, who then released a DVD
