Singapore Swimming Lessons
My son was a water phobic but he recently won the swimming competition held by his
school! Three years ago, my family and I were invited to a house warming party. My son, who
didn’t know how to swim, accidentally fell into the swimming pool while he was playing with
the other kids around the pool side area. He looked at me and shouted for help continuously,
scared to death. I felt so helpless as I wasn’t able to swim as well. I decided to sign my son as
well as myself up for private swimming lesson through Happy Fish Swim School. The
instructor was patient and friendly and helped my son overcome his phobic of water. Now, my
entire family is able to swim and we still head to the pool every week!

A few years ago, my younger sister and I were the first to board our flight for Norfolk,
Virginia. Just as we were about to board the plane, a mechanic came out of the aircraft
and blocked the door with his arms. He turned to the flight attendant and hurriedly stated,
“We got problems!”
I thought to myself, “Why did I have to be the one to hear that? Why couldn’t I have
been at the back of the line? I didn’t need to know that!” Very soon we were back in the
terminal, waiting, and then finally back on the plane. I waited for the pilot to give an
explanation. Pilots take courses to ease passengers’ mind, right? They know what to say to
calm nerves.
Unfortunately, I didn’t think this pilot took that course. Soon his voice thundered
throughout the plane, “Sorry for the delay, ladies and gentlemen. We had no power on the
plane. We have a generator on the ground right now, and we’re going to jump---start the
engines. Once we get them going, we’ll get up in the air and head to Norfolk, and see what
happens.”
See what happens? We were going to get up in the air, and see what happens?
Couldn’t we have another plan, one that’s been worked out just a little better?
At this point, all I could do was to laugh nervously. One woman started yelling, “Oh
no! We’re going to crash!” There were sighs of desperation and anxiety spreading
throughout the cabin. Finally, we got up in the air thirty minutes later, and what happened?
Nothing ---other than thrust (推力) and lift. We arrived in Norfolk, and no sooner had the
wheels touched the ground than a round of applause burst out, as everyone throughout the
airplane breathed a sigh of relief at the same time.
Although, I did sincerely like to have a plan better than “see what happens” worked
out when flying --- it really isn’t such a bad life strategy. Success will never be guaranteed.
The best thing you can do is just get up in the air, and see what happens. Sometimes
adjustments would be made in the air, or shall we say, in the middle of the process.

A. some passenger were sleeping all the way on the plane
B. the passengers arrived in their destination safely as planned
C. the author and his younger sister were the last to board the plane

C. To set up a business, don’t wait until you have everything you need.
D. To achieve success, try to prepare for the worst.

Each year, millions of children around the world are unable to go to school. To draw
attention to this widespread problem, the United Nations (UN) is putting education first.
Recently, the UN screened a documentary film called Back to School. The film is the second
in a series of documentaries (纪录片) for the project Time for School.
These films follow seven children from seven different countries. This 12-year project
began in 2006, when the children first started school. “This is something we could do to
help the education crisis in the world,” said producer and writer Judy Katz.
“Documentary film-makers can get deeply involved in a problem and do something about
it.”
More than 100 million children will never set foot in a school. Sixty percent of those
children are girls. Cheryl Faye, head of the UN Girls Education Initiative, spoke about the
many factors that prevent girls from getting an education. One problem is the long
distance many children must travel to get to school. Also, girls in many cultures are
traditionally expected to marry early and work to help their families. “We need to make a
special effort for girls,” Faye said.
As part of the UN’s Millennium goals, the organization wants every single child to get
at least an elementary education by 2018.
Students from Lawrence Middle School in New York were deeply moved after they saw
the film. The seventh grade class is raising money to help build a library on the outskirts of
Nairobi, Kenya (肯尼亚), where Joab—a child in the documentary—lives. The class
teacher, Karen Weiner, and the class are known in their school as the “Kenya crew”. All
the kids were really happy to support Joab and said they felt great about their fund-raising
efforts. Like the seventh graders at Lawrence Middle School, kids can work together to
make a difference in places like Nairobi. By raising money for education, kids can help
children on the other side of the world have a chance of a better, happier life.
46.What’s the purpose of the UN screening the documentary film Back to School?
A.To raise funds for global education.
B.To raise awareness of the need for global education.
C.To encourage all the children to come back to school.
D.To show the achievements which have been made in the past few years.
47.Special efforts should be made for girls because ________.
A.sixty percent of the children in the world are girls
B.more than 100 million girls will never go to school
C.most of the girls are tired of going to school
D.more than one half of the children who never go to school are girls
48.Which of the following could NOT be the factor that prevents girls from getting an
education?
A.Long distance from school. B.Being born weak.
C.Helping work for the family. D.Early marriage.
49.Why are the class teacher,Karen Weiner, and the class considered as “Kenya crew”?
A.Because they are trying their great efforts to raise money for the education of
Kenya Children.
B.Because they are actors in the documentary film Back to School.
C.Because they are mostly from Kenya, where the child in the documentary lives.
D.Because they all have the same experience as Joab, the Kenya child.
50.The last paragraph mainly discusses ________.
A.American middle school students’ desire to go to Kenya
B.the content of the documentary film Back to School
C.an example of being inspired to take action after seeing the film
D.how students from Lawrence Middle School raise money for their education
D
I’ve just got to talk about this problem I’m having with my postman. It all began a
year ago, after the birth of his first child. Not wanting to appear rude, I asked him about
the baby. The next week, not wanting him to think I had asked out of mere politeness the
week before. I asked all about the baby again. Now I can’t break the habit. I freeze
whenever I see him coming. The words “How’s the baby?” come out on their own. It holds
me up. It holds him up. So why can’t I stop it? The answer is that I want him to like me.
Come to think of it, I want everyone to like me.
My sister had the same problem with the caretaker of her block of flats: “All he ever
does is complain; he talks at me rather than to me, never listen to a word I say, and yet for
some reason I’m always really nice to him. I’m worried in case I have a difficulty one day,
and he won’t lift a finger to help.”
What about at work? Richard Lawton, a management trainer, warns: “Those
managers who are actually liked by most of their staff are always those to whom being
liked is not the primary goal. The qualities that make managers popular are being honest
with staff, treating them as human beings and observing common politeness like saying
hello in the morning.” To explain the point, Richard mentions the story of the company
chairman who desperately wanted to be liked and who, after making one of his managers
fired, said with moist (湿润的) eyes that he was so, so sorry the man was leaving. The
employee replied” “If you were that sorry, I wouldn’t be leaving.” The lesson being,
therefore, that if you try too hard to be liked, people won’t like you.
The experts say it all starts in childhood. “If children feel they can only get love from
their parents by being good,” says Zelda West-Meads, a marriage guidance consultant,
“they develop low self-confidence and become compulsive (难以抑制的) givers.” But is
there anything wrong in being a giver, the world not being exactly short of takers? Anne
Cousins believes there is. “There is a point at which giving becomes unhealthy,” she says.
“It comes when you do things for others but feel bad about it.”
I am now trying hard to say to people “I feel uncomfortable about saying this, but...”,
and tell myself “Refusal of a request does not mean rejection of a person” and I find I can
say almost anything to almost anyone.
51.Why does the author ask the postman about his baby?
A.He is interested in the baby.
B.He wants to create a good impression.
C.He wants to be always polite to him.
D.It's a way to start a chat with great politeness.
52.What could we find out about the author's sister and the caretaker?
A.She doesn't want to risk displeasing him.
B.She doesn't pay attention to him.
C.He often refuses to help her.
D.He is impatient of her overreaction.
53.Managers are more likely to be popular if they ________.
A.help the staff with their problems
B.make sure the staff do not lose their jobs
C.encourage the staff to be polite to each other
D.do not make too much effort to be liked
54. what can we learn from this text?
A.If you tell the truth, it will not make people like you less.
B.If you take time to talk to people, they will like you better.
C.You should avoid unpleasant situations where possible.
D.You shouldn’t refuse other people’s requests for help.
55.What is the author's intention of writing this passage?
A.To show how to let others like you more.
B.To prove how to create a harmonious atmosphere.
C.To encourage people to have more self-confidence.
D.To suggest ways of dealing with difficult people.
第 II 卷 (满分 35 分)
第一节:阅读表达(共 5 个小题,每小题 2 分,满分 10 分)
阅读短文,并按照题目要求用英语回答问题。
I have a friend named John Roberts who owns a horse ranch (牧马场)in San Ysidro.
The last time I was there he shared a story with me. “It is a story about a young man who
was the son of an itinerant (流动的) horse trainer. When he was a senior,he was asked to
write a paper about what he wanted to be and do when he grew up.”
“That night he wrote a seven-page paper describing his goal of someday owning a
horse ranch. He wrote about his dream in great detail and he even drew a diagram of a
200-acre ranch, showing the location of all the buildings, the stables and the track.”
“The next day he handed it in to his teacher. Two days later he received his paper
back. On the front page was a large red F with a note that read, ‘See me after class.’”
“The boy went to see the teacher after class and asked, ‘Why did I receive an F?’”
“The teacher said, ‘This is an unrealistic dream for a young boy like you. You have no
money. You come from an itinerant family. You have no resources. Owning a horse ranch
requires a lot of money. You have to buy the land. You have to pay for the original
breeding stock and later you’ll have to pay large stud fees. There‘s no way you could ever
do it.’ Then the teacher added, ‘If you will rewrite this paper with a more realistic goal, I
will reconsider your grade.’”
“The boy went home and asked his father what he should do. His father said, ‘Look,
son, you have to make up your own mind on this. However, I think it is a very important
decision for you.’”
“Finally, after sitting with it for a week, the boy turned in the same paper, making no
changes at all. He stated, ‘You can keep the F and I’ll keep my dream.’”
John continued, “I tell you this story because you are sitting in the middle of my
200-acre horse ranch. I still have that school paper framed over the fireplace.” He added,
“If I had changed my paper at that time, maybe we would not have the chance to be here
talking about the dreams.”
56. What was the boy’s goal described in his seven-page paper? (No more than 8 words)
57. Why did the teacher give the boy an “F”? (No more than 15 words)
58. How did the boy’s father respond to his son’s puzzlement? (No more than10 words)

Recently, some people have raised doubt about learning from Lei Feng. Should we still
need to learn from him? The answer is surely “yes”.
Our society calls for the spirit of Lei Feng. “To live is to serve the people” perfectly
explains the real meaning of the long-lasting spirit. Nowadays, with volunteering spirit
spreading throughout the world, we students can make use of our spare time to do some
voluntary work for those in need and show great concern to people around us. All we need
to do is to help others whole-heartedly.
We teenagers need to be people who promote the long-lasting spirit. So it is high time
that we developed sense of social responsibility and studied hard so that we can live up to
our country’s expectations. I’m sure everybody can make a difference. Only in this way
can we build a more harmonious society. The world needs love and care. Let’s do as Lei
Feng did.
