第二部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分 35 分)
第一节 (共 10 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 25 分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的 A、B、C 和 D 四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
A popular TV host has reportedly invested about US$ 740,000 in a project to research,
preserve and promote the Hunan provincial dialect ( 方 言 ). Chinese TV presenters are
required to speak Mandarin, or Putonghua, as part of their work, but should dialects be
allowed on air?
Bcnu (China): TV and radio stations have the right to decide whether dialects or
Mandarin will be used in their programs. The popularity of some dialects in some areas will
not challenge the leading role of Mandarin in the whole country.
Rick N (US): TV and radio broadcasters should take the lead in popularizing Mandarin.
To require hosts to speak standard Mandarin is not to oppress (压制) dialects, but it only aims
to restrict irresponsible use of language. I think it is unprofessional for some hosts particularly
to imitate the pronunciation of dialects.
Cooper (UK): Dialects are an important part of local culture and now many kids even
don’t know how to speak their dialects because of the main use of Mandarin around them. It
would be a pity if future generations were unable to understand the local dialects. It would be
a terrible break in cultural traditions.
Steve (France): To attract viewers or make more money, some hosts casually use dialects.
Demanding TV and radio programs use Mandarin is a move to limit strange and irresponsible
use of language, whether it is Mandarin or other dialects. In this way, the decision is also a
form of protection for dialects. Hearing standard Mandarin on TV and radio programs is also
a basic right of audiences around the country.
21.Why does the author mention a popular TV host?
A. To make clear the author’s viewpoint.
B. To introduce the topic to be discussed.
C. To set an example for people to follow.
D. To show dialects are likely to disappear.
22. What affects dialects negatively according to Steve?A. Mass media’s using dialects casually.
B. Improper pronunciation of dialects.
C. Restrictions on speaking dialects publicly.
D. Children’s losing interest in dialects.
23. Who favors dialects on air?
A. Bcnu and Steve. B. Bcnu and Cooper.
C. Rick N and Steve. D. Rick N and Cooper.

The world’s insects are hurtling down the path to extinction, threatening a “catastrophic
collapse of nature’s ecosystems”, according to the first global scientific review. More than 40%
of insect species are declining and a third are endangered, the analysis found. The rate of
extinction is eight times faster than that of mammals, birds and reptiles.
“It should be of huge concern to all of us, for insects are at the heart of every food web.
They pollinate the large majority of plant species, keep the soil healthy, recycle nutrients,
control pests, and much more. Love them or loathe them, we humans cannot survive without
insects, ” said Prof Dave Goulson at the University of Sussex in the UK.
The analysis, published in the journal Biological Conservation, says intensive agriculture is
the main drive of the decline, particularly the heavy use of pesticides. Urbanization and climate
change are also significant factors.
One of the biggest impacts of insect loss is on the many birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish
that eat insects. A small number of adaptable species are increasing in number, but not nearly
enough to outweigh the big losses.
Matt Shardlow, at the conservation charity Buglife, said, “It is gravely sobering to see this
collation of evidence that demonstrates the pitiful state of the world’s insect populations. It is
increasingly obvious that the planet’s ecology is breaking and there is a need for an intense and
global effort to stop and reverse these dreadful trends.”
24.What does “are hurtling down ” underlined mean?
A. To climb very slow in a straight direction.
B. To move very fast in a particular direction.
C. To become lower in value or level quickly.
D. To speed up suddenly in a particular direction.
25.According to the passage, ________ doesn’t cause the decline of the insects.
A. intensive agriculture
B. urbanization
C. climate change
D. pests control
26.In Paragraph 4, the author wants to stress the decline of insects________.
A. by giving the examplesB. by making the comparison
C. by giving the definition
D. by making the explanation
27.What is the main idea of the text?
A. Sharply decreasing insects numbers threaten the damage of nature.
B. The impacts will be brought by the insect loss.
C. The effective measures are taken to stop the scary trends.
D. The leading factors that cause insects decline.
C
California has lost half its big trees since the 1930s, according to a study to be published
Tuesday and climate change seems to be a major factor(因素).
The number of trees larger than two feet across has declined by 50 percent on more than
46, 000 square miles of California forests, the new study finds. No area was spared or
unaffected, from the foggy northern coast to the Sierra Nevada Mountains to the San Gabriels
above Los Angeles. In the Sierra high country, the number of big trees has fallen by more than
55 percent; in parts of southern California the decline was nearly 75 percent.
Many factors contributed to the decline, said Patrick Mclntyre, an ecologist who was the
lead author of the study. Woodcutters targeted big trees. Housing development pushed into the
woods. Aggressive wildfire control has left California forests crowded with small trees that
compete with big trees for resources(资源).
But in comparing a study of California forests done in the 1920s and 1930s with another
one between 2001 and 2010, Mclntyre and his colleagues documented a widespread death of
big trees that was evident even in wildlands protected from woodcutting or development.
The loss of big trees was greatest in areas where trees had suffered the greatest water
shortage. The researchers figured out water stress with a computer model that calculated how
much water trees were getting in comparison with how much they needed, taking into account
such things as rainfall, air temperature, dampness of soil, and the timing of snowmelt(融雪).
Since the 1930s, Mclntyre said, the biggest factors driving up water stress in the state have
been rising temperatures, which cause trees to lose more water to the air, and earlier snowmelt,
which reduces the water supply available to trees during the dry season.
28. Which of the following is well-intentioned but may be bad for big trees?
A. Ecological studies of forests.
B. Banning woodcutting.
C. Limiting housing development.
D. Fire control measures.
29. What is a major cause of the water shortage according to Mclntyre?A. Inadequate snowmelt. B. A longer dry season.
C. A warmer climate. D. Dampness of the air.
30. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. California's Forests: Where Have All the Big Trees Gone?
B. Cutting of Big Trees to Be Prohibited in California Soon
C. Why Are the Big Trees Important to California Forests?
D. Patrick Mclntyre: Grow More Big Trees in California

Her name was Mrs. Thompson. And as she stood in front of the 5th grade class on the
very first day she looked at her students and said that she loved them all the same. But that
was impossible because there in the front row was a little boy named Teddy Stoddard. Mrs.
Thompson had watched Teddy the year before and noticed that he didn't play well with the
other children, that his clothes were messy and that he constantly needed a bath. She paid no
attention to Teddy.
However, when she read his file, she was in surprise. Teddy's first grade teacher wrote,
"Teddy is a bright child with a ready laugh. He does his work neatly and has good
manners...he is a joy to be around." His second grade teacher wrote, "Teddy is an excellent
student, well liked by his classmates. But he is troubled because his mother has a deadly illness
and life at home must be a struggle." His third grade teacher wrote, "His mother's death has
been hard on him. He tried to do his best but his father doesn't show much interest." Teddy's
fourth grade teacher wrote, "Teddy is withdrawn and doesn't show much interest in school. He doesn't have many friends and sometimes sleeps in class.” By now, Mrs. Thompson realized
the problem and she was ashamed of herself. She thought that she could make a difference.
She felt even worse when her students brought her Christmas presents, wrapped in
beautiful paper and tied with pretty ribbons, except for Teddy's. His present was clumsily
wrapped in the heavy, brown paper that he got from a grocery bag. Mrs. Thompson opened it
in the middle of the other presents. Some of the children stared to laugh when she found a
stone bracelet(手镯)with some of the stones missing, and a bottle that was one-quarter full of
perfume.
Paragraph 1:
Mrs. Thompson, her voice choked up with tears, thanked her students for their presents.

Dear Jack,
How are you doing? We Senior 3 students are suffering from great pressure due to the
fierce competition in study. To help deal with this problem, our school will hold a
Psychological Health Week next week, the theme of which is how to relieve mental pressure.
There will be various kinds of activities. A lecture given by a psychological professor on
what to do with the pressure will provide us with professional guidance. There will also be a
drama which will show us an excellent performance. Additionally, some fun games will be
played among the students.
The activities will be quite beneficial for us to relieve pressure and can motivate us to
study more efficiently. Do you also have such activities in your school?
Looking forward to your reply.
读后续写:
11. One possible version
Paragraph 1:
Mrs. Thompson, her voice choked up with tears, thanked her students for their presents. And
then she showed how she liked Teddy's presents, putting the bracelet on, and using some of the
perfume on her wrist. From then on, Mrs. Thompson paid particular attention to Teddy. As
she worked with him, his mind seemed to come alive. The more she encouraged him, the faster
he responded and he showed much interest in study. By the end of the year, Teddy had become
one of the excellent children in the class.
Paragraph 2:
Ten years later, Teddy invited Mrs. Thompson to attend his wedding as groom's mother. She
used the bracelet and the perfume which were the present of that year. At the wedding
ceremony, she met the man with good manners. He said to her, " Thank you, Mrs. Thompson.
Today you smelled just like my mom used to." Mrs. Thompson, with tears in her eyes,
whispered back. She said, "Teddy, you were the one who taught me that I could make a
difference. I'm so proud that today I can be your mother!"

M: The weather is so nice today. Let’s go camping in the mountain.
W: I’d like to, but the coming exam is scheduled for next week and I have to prepare for it in
the library.
Text 2
W: How much did you pay for this new fridge?
M: Oh, it was a little over a thousand dollars, plus tax. It was much more expensive than our
washing machine, but not nearly as much as our bed!
Text 3
W: Well, dinner is ready. I wonder why Tom hasn’t come back yet. M: I just asked him to go to the supermarket after work. He should be on the way back home.
W: Let me call him to ask.
Text 4
M: Well, when I was a teenager, I would go there whenever there was a new movie, but I
seldom go to the cinema anymore.
W: How come?
M: I don’t like all these new science fiction movies, not to mention violence ones!
Text 5
W: Do you know that Mrs. William is already 45?
M: Really? I can’t believe it. She seems like a young lady who is in her thirties.
W: You will be more surprised when you see her 25-year-old daughter.
Text 6
W: Are you sure this is the right street?
M: No, I have no idea where we are.
W: Well, I think we must have got lost.
M: It’s not my fault. Your sister’s directions don’t make sense.
W: What? Don’t blame others. The routes seemed easy to understand for me.
M: Well, then, why don’t you drive if you are so much better at it than I am?
W: OK. This can’t beat me. Pull over.
Text 7
W: What do you do for a living?
M: I’m a sports writer, working with a sports magazine.
W: A sports writer? That must be a lot of work.
M: It is. Every day, I take a lot of pictures.
W: How interesting! Then you travel a lot to watch exciting sports events?
M: You’re right. More than half the year, I am out traveling around the country. And I also
drive a lot.

W: What a cold day! The weatherman says there will be a snowstorm today. You’d better
wear warm clothes, dear.
M: I don’t believe the weatherman anymore. Last week he said there would be clear skies but
it rained all week.
W: All right. Go ahead and catch cold. You can see that it’s overcast. In the winter, that
always means that it’s going to snow.
M: It doesn’t make any difference. Felix is driving me to the office. I don’t have to go outside.
W: But you may go out for lunch.
M: By that time, this storm will have blown over. Look! It’s partly sunny already.
W: No, it’s partly cloudy. Here are your overcoat and boots.
M: Thank you. And here’s Felix. See you tonight.
Text 9
W: So, what are you going to do this summer?
M: Well, I’m probably going on holiday with my parents, but I really hope I can get a summer
job in a market. What about you?
W: I’m going to Scotland for the summer.
M: For the whole summer?
W: Yes. I’m going to work in the mountains with my best friend.
M: Really? That sounds great!
W: Yes. The work won’t be very interesting. It’ll be mostly cooking, cleaning and working on
reception and selling drinks. But our hours are eight till ten in the morning and six till nine in
the evening. So we’ll have plenty of time during the day to go for a walk in the open air.
M: I wish I could get a job like that. How did you find out about it?
W: I read about it in a magazine called Summer Work Round Britain. It tells you about all
kinds of different jobs in different places. You can work on farms picking fruits, or at hotels near the sea. You can even get work at music festivals.

W: Hello, I’m Rachel Joyce. I’m so happy to be here today at the Claremont Library. I’ve
traveled all the way from England, and it’s truly wonderful to visit the United States! This is
the first stop on my book tour. I’m off to Australia next! Before I take any questions, let me tell
you a bit about myself. My new novel, The Love Song of Miss Queenie Hennessy, was
published in 2014. The book is a companion to my first novel, The Unlikely Pilgrimage of
Harold Fry, which follows a man named Harold Fry as he goes in search of his old friend,
Queenie Hennessy, in hopes of saying goodbye before she dies. The novel was published in
2012. It was almost chosen for the Commonwealth Book Prize and the Man Booker Prize. The
Love Song of Miss Queenie Hennessy is Queenie’s side of the story as she waits for Harold.
I’ve also written many radio plays for BBC Radio Four, and in 2007, I won the Tinniswood
Award for my radio play To Be a Pilgrim. I have also won the UK National Book Award for
New Writer of the Year. Now, I’ll take questions from the audience.
