Central Park

On a cool morning, Wilson Kasaine walks along a dirt path in southern Kenya. Actually,
Kasaine is tracking lions. Particularly, he is tracking one lion called Marti.
Tracking lions on foot may sound dangerous, but Kasaine has been doing it for most of his life.
Born in a traditional Maasai family, he understood the beauty and risk of the wildlife. Living with
big game forces him to develop a good sense of where animals have been and where they might be
going. During his 12-kilometer walks to and from school, he learned how to tell the paw prints of a
lion from those of other animals.
Growing up, Kasaine knew that improving his tracking abilities would help him avoid other
dangerous animals. But maybe Kasaine didn’t know that, years later, he would be tracking lions
specifically to encounter them and to protect them. Today he leads a small group of wide-eyed
tourists over a red sandy path in the reserve, searching for the lion that has left upon it his
unmistakable prints.
Each year, tens of thousands of tourists come to Kenya’s national parks to try to visit the “big
five”: elephants, rhinoceros, leopards, buffaloes, and lions. The attraction of these animals to people
all over the world means that the nation’s economy is tied to the protection of its wildlife. If Kenya’s
wildlife disappears, so does its second-largest source of income.
Considering the rapid urban development in Kenya, this isn’t unimaginable. In 2016, a study
shows that many of the nation’s most treasured species have fallen to less than one-third of their
population counting from just 40 years ago. The number of lions fell too. In 1998, the nation was
home to over 15,000; only about 2,000 remain today. Several experts have predicted they could
disappear entirely from the country in the next two decades.
Wildlife protection efforts in Kenya must be at the sacrifice of other things. People were forced
to leave their land and into smaller surrounding regions. Communities like Kasaine’s are now
finding it increasingly difficult to maintain a traditional Maasai lifestyle. But they are glad that their sacrifice really makes a difference.

When I was 12, all I wanted was a signet (图章) ring. They were the "in" thing and it seemed
every girl except me had one. On my 13th birthday, my Mum gave me a signet ring with my
initials(姓名首字母) carved into it. I was in heaven.
What made it even more special was that it was about the only thing that wasn't being "replaced".
We'd been burnt out in fires that swept through our area earlier that year and had lost everything—so
most of the " new" stuff (东西) we got was really just to replace what we'd lost. But not my ring. My

Then, only one month later, I lost it. I took it off before bed and it was missing in the morning. I
was sad and searched everywhere for it. But it seemed to have disappeared. Eventually, I gave up
and stopped looking for it. And two years later, we sold the house and moved away.
Years passed, and a couple of moves later, I was visiting my parents' when Mum told me that she
had something for me. It wasn't my birthday, nor was it Easter or Christmas or any other gift-giving
occasion. Mum noticed my questioning look. " You'll recognize this one," she said, smiling.
Then she handed me a small ring box. I took it from her and opened it to find my beautiful signet
ring inside. The family who had bought our house 13 years earlier had recently decided to do some
redecorations, which included replacing the carpets. When they pulled the carpet up in my old
bedroom, they found the ring. As it had my initials carved into it, they realized who owned the ring.

Walt Disney is credited for creating such wonderful things as Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse.
However, he cannot take the credit for creating other well-loved characters, such as Cinderella and
Snow White. They are almost automatically associated with Disney because Disney turned old
fables(寓言) into cartoon movies.
The original Cinderella varies very much from the Disney version we know today. It started off
with the girl mourning her mother's death and going to her tomb three times a day. In addition, there
were only birds that helped Cinderella; there was no such thing as a fairy godmother or helpful mice,
nor was there mention of a horse and carriage.
The stepsisters were cruel: they always threw Cinderella's food into the ashes of the fire and made

In the original story, the king's ball actually lasted for three days. With the help of the birds, the
girl, beautifully dressed, danced with the prince on all three nights and the prince fell in love with
her. However, she broke away from him to rush back home each night. On the last night, the prince

bride. But when they passed the tomb of Cinderella's mother, the birds called out to the prince,
“Turn and peep, there's blood in the shoe; the shoe is too small, the true bride waits for you.”
Realizing he had been tricked, the prince returned the daughter to her mother. The other then had
to cut off part of her heel in order to fit into the shoe, with the same result. Only Cinderella's foot fit
perfectly and so the prince chose to marry her. The story ends with the wedding day: as Cinderella's
two stepsisters followed her, pretending to be devoted to her so that they could enjoy the king's
riches, two birds flew by and plucked(啄) out their eyes. Because of their wickedness and falsehood,
they had to spend the rest of their days blind.
The original Cinderella is so different from the Disney version. Thank goodness Disney made
such changes; it indeed was a wise move.

Last Thursday, all the students and teachers in our school gathered in the auditorium at 3
p.m. to enjoy a special activity—an English speech contest with the theme of “telling Chinese
stories in English”.
The activity had three parts. First, every contestant delivered his or her own speech and
then each of them was asked to make an impromptu speech according to the given questions by
the judges. The last part was evaluating and presenting the trophies to the award winners.
This contest gave us a good opportunity to enhance our abilities of speaking English as well
as having a deeper understanding of the differences and connections between China and the
world. More importantly, we get to know it is our responsibility to spread splendid Chinese
