Passenger pigeons(旅鸽) once flew over much of the United States in unbelievable numbers.
Written accounts from the 18th and 19th centuries described flocks(群) so large that they darkened the
sky for hours.
It was calculated that when its population reached its highest point, there were more than 3
billion passenger pigeons – a number equal to 24 to 40 percent of the total bird population in the
United States, making it perhaps the most abundant bird in the world. Even as late as 1870 when
their numbers had already become smaller, a flock believed to be 1 mile wide and 320 miles (about
515 kilometers) long was seen near Cincinnati.
Sadly, the abundance of passenger pigeons may have been their undoing. Where the birds were
most abundant, people believed there was an ever-lasting supply and killed them by the thousands.
Commercial hunters attracted them to small clearings with grain, waited until pigeons had settled to
feed, then threw large nets over them, taking hundreds at a time. The birds were shipped to large
cities and sold in restaurants.
By the closing decades of the 19th century, the hardwood forests where passenger pigeons
nested had been damaged by Americans’ need for wood, which scattered ( 驱 散 ) the flocks and
forced the birds to go farther north, where cold temperatures and spring storms contributed to their
decline. Soon the great flocks were gone, never to be seen again.
In 1897, the state of Michigan passed a law prohibiting the killing of passenger pigeons, but by
then, no sizable flocks had been seen in the state for 10 years. The last confirmed wild pigeon in the
United States was shot by a boy in Pike County, Ohio, in 1900. For a time, a few birds survived
under human care. The last of them, known affectionately as Martha, died at the Cincinnati
Zoological Garden on September 1, 1914.
24. In the 18th and early 19th centuries, passenger pigeons _______.
A. were the biggest bird in the world
B. lived mainly in the south of America
C. did great harm to the natural environmentD. were the largest bird population in the US
25. The underlined word “undoing” probably refers to the pigeons’ ______.
A. escape B. liberation C. ruin D. evolution
26. What was the main reason for people to kill passenger pigeons?
A. To make money. B. To save other birds. C. To seek pleasure. D. To protect crops.
27. What can we infer about the law passed in Michigan?
A. It was ignored by the public. B. It was declared too late.
C. It was unfair. D. It was strict.

Some of the most powerful companies in the world have co-founders. For example, Google
(Sergey Brin and Larry Page), Apple (Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs), and Microsoft (Bill Gates and
Paul Allen) and so on. Having partners can help to deal with the pressure and the failures that come
with running a business. No matter how down on your luck you feel they may provide emotional
support. They may have extra skills, and be on hand to help out with the day-to-day. And an
alternate point of view may help to broaden your mind and aid the risk of mistakes being
overlooked.
Everybody knows Samsungs Galaxy Note 7. When the phone was launched in 2016, customers
praised it for its storage, design and usability, and it may well have been a hit if it weren’t for the
fact that it occasionally caught
fire and exploded. It was soon banned immediately from flights, and Samsung had no choice but to
recall the entire model. The shortcoming reportedly cost the company $1 billion, and a further $17
billion in lost sales. But remember, based on the lesson, the Galaxy Note 8 and the Galaxy Note 9
are well received in the world! Now we know that failing is part of business success.
One thing that all great companies have in common is that they have failed many times—and
luckily, they bounced back. Take Sarah Blakely, founder of shapewear brand Spanx, for example.
She credits her business success specifically to her failures. “I’d get kicked out of buildings all day
long,” she remembered. “People would tear up my business card in my face. But my friends and I
knew I could sell and I knew I wanted to sell something I had created. I learned that ‘no’ doesn’t
always mean ‘no’, and that you may get 30 nos before you get the one yes. People told me no with Spanx for two years.” Spanx is worth just over $ I billion—it was a company that Blakely who took
a degree in a law school started with just $ 5000!
28. What’s the main idea of the first paragraph?
A. Constant dropping wears away a stone.
B. Two heads are better than one.
C. God helps those who help themselves.
D. All things are difficult before they are easy.
29. Why does the author mention Samsungs Galaxy Note 7, 8 and 9?
A. To explain that failures don’t spell the end.
B. To argue customers always follow the new trends.
C. To prove Samsung is responsible for customers.
D. To show Samsung paid for its product failure.
30. What mainly contributed to Sarah Blakely’s success?
A. Her friends’ help. B. Her good luck.
C. Her will power. D. Her education background.
31. How does the author develop the passage?
A. By contrast. B. By classification.
C. By giving numbers. D. By giving examples.
D
Teens are now less likely to do part-time jobs, drink alcohol or go out without their parents than
their counterparts 10 or 20 years ago. This generation of teens is delaying the responsibilities and
pleasures of adulthood. Some people think that today's teens are more virtuous ( 有 道 德 的 ) and
responsible. Others have suggested that today's teens aren't working because they are simply lazy.
To figure out what's really going on, we should look at these trends with “life history theory"
taken into consideration. A “fast-life method” was the more common parenting approach in the
mid-20th century, when fewer labor-saving devices were available and the average woman had four
children. The parents needed to focus on day-to-day survival. As a result, kids needed to care for
themselves sooner. A "slow-life method", on the other hand, is more common in times and places
where families have fewer children and spend more time on each child's growth and development. When the average family has two children, preparing for college can begin as early as primary
schools. The two methods are adaptations to a particular cultural background, so each isn't naturally
“good" or “bad".
Delaying exposure to alcohol, then, could make young adults less prepared to deal with
drinking in college. One study found teens who rapidly increased there binge-drinking(酗酒)were
more at risk of alcohol dependence than those who learned to drink over a longer period of time. The
same might be true of teens who don't work, drive or go out much in high school. College
administrators describe students who can't do anything without calling their parents. Employers
worry that more young employees lack the ability to work independently.
However, the “slow-life method” is also likely beneficial as teens are spending more time
developing socially and emotionally before they drive, drink alcohol and work for pay. The key is to
make sure that teens eventually get the opportunity to develop the skills they will need as adults:
independence, along with social and decision-making skills. For parents, this might mean pushing
their teenagers out of the house more.
32. According to the text, teens in the past were more .
A. reliable B. innocent C. independent D. intelligent
33. What plays a vital role in the trend of teens growing up more slowly?
A. Social standard. B. Cultural changes.
C. Educational development. D. Methods of education.
34. What does the author advise parents to do?
A. Spend less time in accompanying their children.
B. Force their children to leave home at an early age.
C. Help their children to get to adulthood as soon as possible.
D. Encourage their children to take part in social activities.
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Why today's teens aren't in any hurry to grow up.
B. How teens develop skills they need in future.
C. Teens take no responsibility for what they do.
D. Nowadays teens can't make decisions by themselves.第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分)
