B People in Mayilattumpara, a village in southwest India, could not sleep at night.
Because of habitat loss, wild elephants would enter their village to look for food,
destroying crops and farmland.
The villagers tried to keep the wild elephants out with electric fences, deep
holes and plants believed to keep the animals away. They even tried beating drums,
but nothing worked!
The repeated damage of crops led some villagers to stop farming. Luckily，last year
villagers found what keeps the elephants away: honey bees. Elephants are afraid of
loudly buzzing bees and their stings(蛰).
An electric fence holding beehives( 蜂 巢 ) now runs along the border of the
village. When elephants try to pass the 2.5 kilometers electric fence, angry bees
fly out and the elephants quickly run away. Protected by the bees, farmers have
returned to growing their crops.
Roy works for Agriculture Technology Management Agency. He said the idea for the
fence came from the work of an Oxford University researcher, Lucy King. In 2008, Lucy
successfully tested whether honeybees would keep elephants away from areas in Kenya.
Researchers in Tanzania had the same success. So, Roy worked with the farmers in
Mayilattumpara to start the experiment.
Setting up the fence and beehives in a large farmland was not easy. The farmers
needed to learn how to care for the bees and deal with the cost of keeping up the
system. The results of this experiment have encouraged farmers from other areas to
try similar projects. The officials also have been working to deal with trouble between
humans and elephants by improving the elephants’ natural habitat.

Running on the beach can certainly be a good thing. It’s completely different
from running on the pavement, a track or trails with soft surfaces.
For starters, sand can be hard because it has an uneven(不平的) surface and
constantly moves under your feet. As you push off, you’re going to lose some of your
push as the sand moves. So, you’re not going to be able to push yourself forward
as you would on a track or pavement! But this unevenness has an upside: It gives your
body an extra workout, forcing you to exercise muscles that don’t get as much use
during runs on firm surfaces.
You also might feel painful afterward because beaches tend to slope( 倾 斜 )
downward, toward the water. If you’re going for a long run on the beach, you might
notice that one side of your body-including your ankle, leg or knee-might feel more
painful because you’ re putting more pressure on it due to the slope.
Some beach runners tend to run barefoot. However, if you’re not used to barefoot
running, start slowly and run short distances at first. That’s because running
barefoot uses different muscles than running with shoes does, and it’s important
to strengthen these muscles and adapt your feet.
Despite these difficulties, running on sand can be a smart choice for athletes
because running on it can decrease the bad influence on your body during high-intensity
workouts. This could potentially lead to less muscle damage and less pain. Women had
less myoglobin(肌红蛋白)—a protein that can be a sign of muscle pain-in their blood
after running on the sand than they did after running on grass. This suggests running on softer ground surfaces, such as sand, may reduce muscle damage.

Today, many people use plants from other places to design their yards. Well, do
they have any influence on animals living nearby? As we know, plants supply food for
things like insects and plant-eating animals. In turn, birds and meat-eating animals
feed on these insects and plant-eating animals. It is easy to see how important plants
are.
Although foreign plants may look beautiful, they can cause problems when there
are too many of them. I live in Virginia, USA, and sometimes see a plant—commonly
known as kudzu—that seems to cover everything in the area, even climbing over whole
trees and houses.
Kudzu is an unbelievable plant since it grows very fast. It was first brought
to the United States from South-east Asia around the 1870s as a crop that farmers
could grow. However, kudzu quickly came to be considered harmful throughout the
southern United States.
Since kudzu grows fast in many different environments, it can completely cover
areas of land quickly. The plant is also not eaten by any insects or birds in the
United States so it can grow unchecked. Kudzu can cover trees, bushes, and even houses.
It costs the United States 500 million dollars a year to just keep kudzu from growing too fast. The plant is a perfect example of what scientists call an invasive(侵略
性的) species, which grows more quickly than other native plants.
All foreign plants have the possibility to spread quickly. Not only are they costly,
but planting them in gardens actually takes away food from insects. If everyone filled
their gardens with plants native to where they live, many lovely butterflies and other
native creatures would be attracted to their backyards! So, take a look out of your
