When I was about 12, I had an enemy, a girl who liked to point out my shortcomings. Week
by week her list grew: I was very thin, I wasn't a good student, I talked too much, I was too proud,
and so on. I tried to hear all this as long as I could. At last, I became very angry. I ran to my father
with tears in my eyes.
He listened to me quietly, then he asked, “Are the things she says true or not? Janet, didn't
you ever wonder what you're really like? Well, you now have that girl's opinion. Go and make a list
of everything she said and mark the points that are true. Pay no attention to the other things she
said.”
I did as he told me. To my great surprise, I discovered that about half the things were true.
Some of them I couldn't change (like being very thin), but a good number I could—and suddenly I
wanted to change. For the first time I got a fairly clear picture of myself.I brought the list back to Daddy. He refused to take it. “That's just for you ,” he said.
“You know better than anyone else the truth about yourself. But you have to learn to listen, not
just close your ears in anger and feel hurt. When something said about you is true, you'll find it will
be of help to you. Our world is full of people who think they know your duty. Don't shut your ears.
Listen to them all, but hear the truth and do what you know is the right thing to do.” Daddy's
advice has returned to me at many important moments. In my life, I've never had a better piece of
advice.
24. What did the father do after he had heard his daughter's complaint?
A. He agreed with her “enemy”.
B. He let her continue to put up with her “enemy”.
C. He told her to write down all her “enemy” had said about her.
D. He told her not to pay attention to what her “enemy” had said.

A. The “enemy” thought the writer was pretty.
B. The “enemy” thought the writer studied hard.
C. The writer and her “enemy” became best friends at last.
D. The writer is grateful to her father.
26. Which do you think would be the best title for this passage?
A. Not an Enemy, but the Best Friend
B. The Best Advice I've Ever Had
C. My Father
D. My Childhood

When a leafy plant is under attack,it doesn't sit quietly. Back in 1983, two scientists, Jack
Schultz and Ian Baldwin, reported that young maple trees getting bitten by insects send out a
particular smell that neighboring plants can get. These chemicals come from the injured parts of the
plant and seem to be an alarm. What the plants pump through the air is a mixture of chemicals
known as volatile organic compounds, VOCs for short.
Scientists have found that all kinds of plants give out VOCs when being attacked. It's a plant's
way of crying out. But is anyone listening ? Apparently( 明 显 地 ). Because we can watch the
neighbours react.
Some plants pump out smelly chemicals to keep insects away. But others do double duty.
They pump out perfumes(香味) designed to attract different insects who are natural enemies to
the attackers. Once they arrive, the__tables__are__turned. The attacker who was lunching now
becomes lunch.
In study after study, it appears that these chemical conversations help the neighbors. The
damage is usually more serious on the first plant, but the neighbors, relatively speaking, stay safer
because they heard the alarm and knew what to do.
Does this mean that plants talk to each other?Scientists don't know. Maybe the first plant just
made a cry of pain or was sending a message to its own branches, and so, in effect, was talking to
itself. Perhaps the neighbors just happened to “ overhear ” the cry. So information was
exchanged, but it wasn't a true, intentional(故意的) back and forth.
Charles Darwin, over 150 years ago, imagined a world far busier, noisier and more
intimate(亲密的) than the world we can see and hear. Our senses are weak. There's a whole lot going on.
27. What does a plant do when it is under attack?
A. It makes noises. B. It gets help from other plants.
C. It stands quietly. D. It sends out certain chemicals.
28. What does the author mean by “the tables are turned” in Paragraph 3?
A. The attackers get attacked.
B. The insects gather under the table.
C. The plants get ready to fight back.
D. The perfumes attract natural enemies.
29. Scientists find from their studies that plants can ________ .
A. predict natural disasters(灾害) B. protect themselves against insects
C. talk to one another intentionally D. help their neighbors when necessary
30. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. The world is changing faster than ever.
B. People have stronger senses than before.
C. The world is more complex(复杂的) than it seems.
D. People in Darwin's time were more imaginative.

How to Improve Your English
Define your learning objectives early: what do you want to learn and why? Make learning a
habit. __31__ It is much better to study (or read, or listen to English news, and so on) for 10
minutes each day than to study for 2 hours once a week.
Choose your materials well. You will need reading, grammar, writing, speaking and listening
materials—beginners can use a basiclevel English guide, and then move on to an advancedlevel
English guide. __32__ It will make learning more enjoyable—thus more effective.
Vary your learning routine. It is best to do different things each day to help keep the various
relationships between each area active. __33__
__34__ Learning English together can be very encouraging. You can find friends to speak
English on the Internet.
Relate grammar to practical usage. Grammar by itself does not help you use the language. You
should practice what you are learning by employing it actively.
Move your mouth! Understanding something doesn't mean that the muscles of your mouth can
produce the sounds. __35__ It may seem strange, but it is very effective.
Be patient with yourself. Remember that learning is a process—speaking a language well
takes time. It is not a computer that is either on or off!
A. The Internet is the most exciting, unlimited English resource.
B. Try to learn something every day.
C. Practice speaking what you are learning aloud.
D. In other words, don't just study grammar.

A 15yearold boy planned to put a ball covered with petrol into his mouth and set it on fire.
He would film the dangerous action and put it on YouTube. And, he hoped to become famous on
the Internet. But things didn't go the way he imagined. His clothing caught fire, and he was rushed
to the hospital with serious burns on his body.
YouTube hosts millions of videos of people attempting dangerous actions. Many of them are
by kids and young adults. Some experts say that by hosting these videos, YouTube encourages
young viewers to take deadly risks. Research by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
shows that more than 180,000 Americans die from accidental injuries each year. That's one person
every three minutes. More than 14,000 of those killed are kids under the age of 19. Is YouTube to
blame?
People have always found it interesting to watch others try risky things. Audiences are mad
about these kinds of things. Some of the earliest Greek comedies had characters followed by wild
animals and knocking into walls. Now, in the age of the Internet, anyone with a camera and a
YouTube account can create this kind of “ fun ” . Many viewers, especially teenagers, are
influenced by what they see and want to try it themselves. “YouTube has taken the playing in the
neighborhood to a worldwide level,” says Clair Mellenthin, a researcher from the Centers.
Supporters of YouTube argue that it isn't YouTube's responsibility to examine its content.
“Parents should be the ones to make sure that kids are behaving safely ,” they say. In fact,
YouTube has a rule on content. For example, dangerous activities that have a risk of serious
physical harm or death are not allowed. Staff of YouTube, carefully watch the website 24 hours a
day, looking for videos that are against their rules. But is this enough?

Dear Li Hua,
I’m glad to hear that you are a faithful reader of Teens. As an editor in the column of Secret
Words, I’m thankful for your trust. I’m writing to give you my humble opinions.
Trying to be perfect is nothing too bad. Instead, it’s a valuable virtue you should stick to. But
don’t be too hard on yourself or too critical about yourself. Things do not always take place as
planned. What you should do is just try your best. Process is far more important than outcome.
I wish my opinions above would be helpful to you. Keep in touch!
Yours sincerely,
David
Possible version 1:
Filming dangerous actions and posting them on YouTube is being widely spread nowadays
among millions of people, mostly teenagers. Although one person dies from accidental injuries every three minutes, “fun” seekers or “fun” makers have been trying something dangerous
and exciting. Despite being equipped with content examination and strict regulations against
dangerous activities, YouTube lacks enough careful control over itself.(60 words)
Possible version 2:
Millions of people, some of whom are teenagers, are attempting dangerous actions and put
them on YouTube, which makes people believe YouTube should answer for such tragedies. The
fact is that people, whether ancient or modern, love watching others try risky or deadly things.
Therefore, not only YouTube but also parents and teenage viewers themselves should be
responsible for their monitoring and behaviors. (63 words)
或 answer for...”

By the way, where is Mike?
Text 2
W: Wow, that opera singer is fantastic! I could listen to him all night.
M: No, not me. I prefer rock music. This guy is kind of boring even more so than jazz singers.
I bet my mom would like him, though.
Text 3
W: What a beautiful sunny day today! Let's go to the beach.
M: Okay, I'll get my beach towel. You can lie down on the sand while I am swimming.
Text 4
W: Is the party still on Tuesday?
M: That gives us too little time to prepare. Besides, the place's booked up on Saturday. So I
decided to change it to Friday. Text 5
M: I lost my ID card. What should I do to replace it?
W: Write down your name and social security number on this form, and stand behind that line.
I'll take your picture here.

W: I'll print you the new ID card in about a minute.
Text 6

W: Yes, she is such a great teacher... how about some flowers?
M: But she told us she had a garden full of them. What about chocolates?
W: That sounds sweet. But shouldn't we get her something she can keep? Maybe something
to wear...like a scarf?
M: That's a wonderful idea. Let's do it now.
Text 7
W: Hi. My name's Annie.
M: Annie. Oh, you're Jim's friend!
W: Yeah. We worked in the same office until he moved to Hawaii. You look a lot like Jim.
Are you related?
M: Yeah, we're cousins. His mum and my mum are sisters.
W: Do you live around here?
M: No, I live in San Francisco. I just came for the wedding.
W: San Francisco? Me, too. I just came for the wedding, too.

W: I'm an art director in a fashion magazine. How about you?

M: Mother, I...
W: Oh, David, have you found it?
M: Yes, I found it a few minutes ago.
W: Where did you find it?
M: Inside a piece of cake.
W: What?
M: Well, Dad was eating a piece of cake when he bit into something hard. It was put on the
newspaper in the drawer.
W: And it was my ring?
M: Yes, I guess it fell off your finger while you were making the cake this morning.
Text 9
M: Where are you going, Mrs. Green?
W: We're going to the subway station first. We have to catch the train at 4 o'clock.
M: There are only 30 minutes left. Today is Friday, and there may be a traffic jam. You should have left home a bit earlier.
W: That's why we are choosing the subway. Tommy is always slow, you know. We often have
to wait for him.
M: But your son is very cute.
W: Thanks!
M: I guess you're leaving for Washington to see Tommy's grandparents?
W: Yes, they miss Tommy very much, so we'll take him to see them.
M: Please remember to send my regards to them.
W: OK, I will. There is no more time for chatting. See you next weekend.
M: Have a nice trip.
Text 10
M: Hello, everyone. My name is John. Today I want to say something mainly about my daily
life. First I want to say my life has changed a lot. When I was a child, I had a lot of time to play.
But now I have to study all day. I used to play baseball and basketball with my classmates, but now
I just stay at home and do my homework. I seldom watch TV these days, for I'm often busy
preparing for my tests. Books were my good friends. I used to read a lot of cartoon books and
storybooks instead of reading textbooks all day like now. I enjoy doing homework with my friends.
But my parents don't allow me to do that, because they think we will talk instead of studying. I
disagree. We can learn a lot from each other. My mother is a doctor, and my father is an engineer.
They expect me to be a doctor when I grow up, but I want to be a writer. Maybe I'll be a doctor
anyway, but I don't think I could be a happy doctor.
