Beyond Facebook: The best travel social networks you need to know
When it comes to picking a destination for your next big vacation or even your next meal, nothing beats a
personal recommendation from someone who has already made the trip. While you don’t always hear a ton about
social networks for travelers, there are a number of great ones out there that can help you make those difficult
decisions, and perhaps a few new friends in the process.
1. Wayn
Sometimes we can all benefit from a little inspiration. With Wayn, you search for new travel destinations
based on the type of activities you’d like to do. For instance, you might type in skiing or diving and get
suggestions on where the best places are to visit. Already know where you want to go? You can also search by
destination and get tips from locals on what to do while you’re there.
2. Hellotel
Business travel often means lonely travel. Hellotel creates a localized social network around the hotel you’re
staying in, allowing you to connect with other nearby travelers(or locals) to grab a drink or do a little networking.
Have a specific need? You can also ask the group questions about everything from restaurants to transportation
options and get answers in real time.
3. Trover
A picture is worth a thousand words. Explore some of the world’s most exciting travel destinations through
the photos of other travelers. Trover creates Instagram-like galleries you can explore with user-submitted photos
from around the world. You can use the images to plan your next big getaway, or to just to take a virtual vacation
from your office chair during your lunch break.

Researchers out of Melbourne have discovered an effective new method to capture the atmospheric carbon
dioxide that is damaging our planet and transform it into something solid, making it much easier to store.2/8
Carbon capture isn’t new, but previous methods call for the gas to get into a liquid and then the mixed gas is
forced into underground. Widespread usage of that technology has been blocked by economic and environmental
concerns due to possible leaks. Instead, in a study published in Nature Communications, the group details their
lasting and cost-effective plan for transforming CO2 into coal.
This new process involves a liquid metal catalyst(催化剂) that is useful in conducting electricity. CO2
gas is then mixed in a container with some liquid and the liquid metal. Once electricity charge is introduced, the
CO2 begins to turn into solid pieces of carbon, which can be collected and stored.
What makes this particularly unique is that the entire process can occur at room temperature. Previous
experiments have only shown a gas to solid conversion at extremely high temperatures, which made it impossible
on a large scale. Now, the researchers are hoping that their work will be used to create even further options when
it comes to carbon storage.
In an interesting side benefit, the solid carbon also works as an electrode(电极),which opens up a world of
possibilities. “A side benefit of the process is that the carbon can hold electrical charge, becoming a super battery,
so it could potentially be used as a part in future vehicles,” explains Dr. Dorna Esrafilzadeh, a Vice-Chancellor’s
Research Fellow in RMIT’s School of Engineering. “The process also produces fuel as a by-product, which could
also have industrial applications.”
24.What can we know about the previous methods?
A.The previous methods are not very popular.
B.The previous methods can be done easily.
C.People have to inject a liquid to the gas.
D.People made mistakes by previous methods.
25.What is the special part of the new method?
A.It can produce much solid carbon.
B.It can be done in any kind of container.
C.It doesn’t need extreme temperature.
D.It needs electricity to make the progress.
26.We can predict from the last paragraph that the new method_________.
A.will be influenced by nature
B.will influence the future industry
C.will be used to make new vehicles
D.will make all the countries powerful
27.What is the best title for the passage?
A. A new method to increase CO2
B. A new carbon capture technology
C. A new technology to get useful carbon
D. An Australian advanced carbon battery
C
Those of you who are bad at math may some day be able to improve your skills through a painless method of
electrical brain stimulation(刺激).
In a study, neuroscientists at Oxford University reported that adults with normal math abilities were able to
improve their performance on a series of numerical tests with the help of a technique known as transcranial
direct-current stimulation (TDCS).
TDCS involves stimulating specific regions of the brain with low-level electrical currents to improve or
reduce the activity of neurons (神经细胞). Over the last decade, the procedure has shown promise in improving
brain functions in stroke (中风) victims, as well as in people with Parkinson’s disease. But this is the first study to
show that TDCS can help healthy individuals do better on math tests. 3/8
For the study, Cohen Dosh and his colleagues studied 15 student volunteers. The students were asked to learn
a series of artificial numbers. “As our aim is eventually to help children when they are experiencing learning
difficulties with numbers, we wanted the adult subjects to learn new materials rather than testing them with
materials that they already knew,” Cohen Dosh explained.
His team tested the participants’ ability to judge the relationships of the artificial numbers to one another and
to map them correctly in space using standard testing methods for numerical ability.
The results of the tests showed that the brain stimulation improved the participants’ ability to learn the new
numbers and that those improvements lasted for six months. Control tests showed that the effect was specific to
the learned symbols and did not affect other cognitive(认知的) functions.
“Like many good studies, it opens a window for lots of questions, including ‘Will this work on children?’
and ‘Is it safe to use in children?” said Dr. Edwin M. Robertson.
“Our aim is to find a way to improve cognitive treatment by coupling it with harmless and painless brain
stimulation,” said Cohen Dosh. “The experiments that we are doing have been designed to improve leaning
disabilities, but of course they can be used by others to improve average math performance, and we don’t have
any control over that.”
28.According to the text, TDCS has been applied in the field of _______.
A. physics B. psychology C. education D. medicine
29.The underlined word “them” in Paragraph 4 refers to _______
A. the artificial numbers
B. the adult subjects
C. the new materials
D. the learning difficulties
30.The attitude of Dr. Robertson toward Dosh’s technique is _______.
A. neutral B. excited C. indifferent D. disapproving
31.What is the main idea of the text?
A. A way has been found to improve the math skills of adults.
B. Teacher can stimulate the math skills of students with electricity.
C. Electric shocks may reduce one’s ability to calculate.
D. Math skills improve with electrical brain stimulation
D
I grew up in a family that loved Halloween and eagerly accepted seasonal opportunities to create numbers of
scary situations. There was something in the tacit(默认的) agreement about being scared on Halloween that made
it okay to take things to another level. Whether for front yard decorations or the theatrical, haunted(闹鬼的) house
we ran, the people stepping up knew what they were in for.
Our haunted house had an age restriction against children 12 and under. The restriction was not only meant
to protect kids with big imaginations, but it could also let the adults in the group enjoy the experience without
having to watch out for younger ones with them. Even so, we had adults get scared. One woman crawled out in a
mid-show. But everyone knew that, if at any point they got too scared, they just had to say, “I want out.” A
penlight would turn on, one of us would grab onto their arm, and we would lead them off into the dark---ten
seconds and done. Then the person stepped into the light of the basement stairwell, having an early teenage
version of someone like me pull off a black mask and ask if they were okay.
The goal was never to make them feel bad; it was to make them feel comfortable. If they seemed calm
enough, sometimes we asked if they wanted to join back up in the last room. We would give a very basic
description of what would happen. Some of them didn’t, but some of them did. There was no point in trying to
convince someone who no longer wanted to be scared. Everyone deserves to get a chance to enjoy the day in their
own way and on their own terms.4/8
32.Why did the writer’s family place an age restriction?
A. To help the adults have a great time.
B. To prevent kids from imagining fiercely.
C. To protect people from the haunted house.
D. To help the adults watch out for younger kids.
33.If a man was too afraid, what could he do?
A. Turn on a penlight.
B. Run out of the house.
C. Lead others into the dark.
D. Say that he wants to go out.
34.Which word can best describe the purpose of the activity?
A. Bad B. Just so-so C. Human-based D. Childish
35.Which of the following would be the best title for this text?
A. An Exciting Halloween
B. Scary Situations That I Remember
C. Be Afraid, but Only If You Want to Be
D. Is It Important to Convince Someone?
第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分)

How to Develop Positive Values in Your Child
Consider these tips to help you be a positive role model in your child’s life.
Cultivate open communication. Teens are more likely to internalize(内化)their parents’ values when they
have open, frequent, and honest communication with each other—when teens feel comfortable talking with their
parents about tough issues and about things that matter to them. 36 That makes it easier to connect the
parents’ values with teens’ own emerging values.
37 When you show interest in the things that matter to your children, you show them that you care
about their choices and activities. That attentiveness, in turn, motivates your children to pay attention to and
accept your values and expectations.
View mistakes as teachable moments. 38___ Sometimes those mistakes are fairly trivial; sometimes
they have momentous (重大的) consequences. In each case, remember to keep your relationship with your child
as a priority, and seek to find ways to learn from the mistakes.
Provide experiences that reinforce positive values and commitments. If caring for others is important,
give young people opportunities to care for others. If being honest is important, give them opportunities to be
honest. If being generous is important, give them opportunities to share. 39 When you do, also be sure to
talk about or reflect on the experience, so they can become more clear about why they do what they do.
Learn from your children. Your relationship with your child is a two-way street. They learn from you; 5/8
you learn from them. Through their experiences, they may develop values and beliefs that enrich your life and
help you see the world and other people in new ways. Be open to what they have to teach you. 40
A. Making mistakes is avoidable for a child.
B. Many factors influence teen’s values.
C. Pay attention to your child’s world and interests.
D. In the process, they will be open to what you have to teach them.
E. If being responsible is important, give responsibilities to the child.
F. Your child is going to make mistakes and not live up to your expectations.
G. Besides, parents gain a greater understanding of how teens think and what’s important to them.
