The Blarney Stone, known as bluestone, is built into the wall at the top of Blarney Castle in County Cork, Ireland. According to legend, if you kiss the stone, you will gain the gift of eloquence(口才). During a recent visit to Ireland, I had a chance to see this fortunate stone. “More than 450,000 people come to see Blarney Castle each year due to the mystery of the stone,” said Paul O’sullivan, marketing manager of Blarney Castle & Gardens. “Many of our visitors travel up the 128 narrow, winding steps to the top, where the Blarney Stone lies.” To kiss the Blarney Stone, one must lie down and lean back while holding onto iron rails. An assistant from Blarney Castle is there to support and protect those kissing the stone. The drop below is 85 feet, but there are metal bars to keep tourists from falling. In fact, there is no clear, recorded history about the origins of the stone. But most people think that, as O’sullivan explained, after the owner of the castle saved a witch( 女 巫 ) from drowning in a nearby lake, she gave the stone to him as a gift in return. She told him that if he kissed the stone, it would get rid of his speech impediment( 口 吃 ). That is where the gift of eloquence comes from. We’ll never know for certain how the legend of the Blarney Stone came to be. This adds to the mystery and brings the curiosity of tourists from around the world. More than 1,000 people experience breathtaking views and a chance of eloquence every day. 24. What makes the Blarney Stone become popular? A. Its long history. B. Its location. C. Its mystery. D. Its beautiful view. 25. An assistant from Blarney Castle is arranged by the Blarney Stone to . A. hold onto iron rails B. make sure of visitors’ safety C. tell how the stone came into being D. protect the stone as much as possible 26. The witch gave the stone to the owner of the castle to . A. show her thanks to the owner B. pass down her kindness C. save the drowning castle D. teach him social skills 27. What’s the best title for the passage? A. Legends of the Blarney Stone. B. History of Blarney Castle. C. Being curious to explore a stone. D. Kissing the Blarney Stone. C Seriously, how is starting school at 8 A.M still a thing? For years, researchers have argued that teens suffer from long-term lack of sleep due to school starting at 8 A.M. The American Academy of Pediatrics has suggested that middle and high schools start no earlier than 8:30 A.M to give students the amount of sleep they need. Most sleep experts have similar feelings, but policy makers argue that changing school start time would simply be too expensive, mostly due to transportation costs, including rescheduling bus routes. Well, not only is that response unsatisfying, but it’s also wrong. A new report found that pushing start time to 8:30 A.M would improve students’ performance, reduce drop-out rates, and save the US government up to $ 9 billion a year. The study was carried out by RAND, an American nonprofit global policy think tank. In order to reach this conclusion, they developed a complex macro economic model analyzing the prospect( 分 析 前 景 ) of the change, as well as the nationwide health impact on students and teachers. Here are the main findings of the study: Moving the start time from 8 A.M to 8:30 A.M would have a significant positive health impact on the target population; There would be costs connected with this change, but they would be offset after only two years; After a decade, savings would amount to $ 83 billion. After 15 years, savings would grow to $140 billion, with an average figure $ 9.3 billion/year. Car accidents associated with school transportation would likely decrease, as the drivers would be less tired themselves; and a later time would lead to students sleeping more. Needless to say, lack of sleep in teenagers is a major problem. In the short and medium term, it correlated( 关 联 ) with poor physical and mental health, concentration problems, as well as depression and suicidal thoughts. In the long run, lack of sleep often leads to memory and a reduced quality of life. So it’s better for the kids, it saves money and potentially even lives…why aren’t we doing it already? 28. Who is against starting school at 8:30 A.M? A. RAND. B. Policy makers. C. Sleep experts. D. The American Academy of Pediatrics. 29. Moving the school start time has nothing to do with . A. students’ health B. students’ performance C. traffic accidents D. private savings 30. The underlined word “offset” is most likely to mean . A. charged B. increased C. recovered D. reduced 31. What’s the writer’s attitude to starting school at 8:30 A.M? A. Supportive. B. Opposed. C. Indifferent. D. Neutral. D A worker at the Maryland Zoo found a box turtle whose shell was broken. Zoo workers wanted to help him. And the doctors made him a wheelchair, a very special wheelchair because the wheelchair is made of Lego! The turtle is a wild Eastern box turtle; he had breaks on the bottom of his shell and went to the zoo hospital in July. The doctors examined his shell and found one problem. They needed to keep the shell off the ground and especially, keep the shell still while it healed. Dr. Ellen Bronson, working at the zoo said they tried to build a cart because the cart could keep the turtle’s shell off the ground but the cart wouldn’t let the turtle move freely. To solve the problem, at first, Dr. Bronson’s team tried to put wheels on the cart but it did not work well. Her team came up with another idea. What if they tried Lego? A zoo worker, Garrett Fraess drew some turtle wheelchairs and then sent the drawings of a wheelchair to his friend. His friend loves Lego and gave an idea to make a wheelchair with Lego. The wheelchair was a hit! The Lego held the turtle up and kept the shell in place. The turtle was able to roll around. Nowadays, the turtle doesn’t need the wheelchair any more and will be put back in the park. But visitors cannot see the turtle while he gets better in one year. Visitors can see other Eastern box turtles in the zoo’s Maryland Wilderness area. The area shows all kinds of animals that call Maryland home. For the last 20 years, the zoo has done an Eastern box turtle watch program in Druid Hill Park. In the park, workers tag(附以标签) the turtles and then put the turtles back. They want to understand more about how turtles act in city parks. 32. What is the special feature of the wheelchair? A. Its unique materials. B. Its healing function. C. Its beautiful appearance. D. Its building process. 33. What trouble did Dr. Bronson came across at first? A. How to draw a wheelchair. B. How to keep the turtle still. C. How to let the turtle move freely. D. How to keep the turtle off the ground. 34. How is the turtle now? A. It can get close to visitors. B. It is used to living in the park. C. It has owned a healthy body. D. It can get rid of the wheelchair. 35. Workers in the park tag the turtles to . A. call on visitors to protect turtles. B. make a further study of turtles. C. divide turtles into different kinds. D. help more injured turtles. 第二节(共 5 小题,每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余 选项。 We all have negative voice inside of us that tells us to stay still and not to go to work out. 36 Here are some steps to help you defeat that negative voice in your head. Admit its presence For as long as we can remember, this inner voice has always been there. 37 Once you make yourself realize that it is there and what it does to you, then you are in a better position to deal with it correctly. Drown it with positive thoughts 38 For example, when you are supposed to go work out, but that voice says “No, we’re comfortable here, and let’s not move”, you can replace it right away with “Yes, I can do it, and I’m doing it!” Change your vocabulary 39 It has been trained to put things into certain words. What you need to do is change and remove certain words from your speech and thoughts. Replace “can’t, won’t, wouldn’t and mightn’t” with clear positive words such as I will, I can, I have and I want. Speak out loud A loud and clear voice that you hear is more likely to overcome an inner voice. 40 Hearing yourself say out loud like “I’m going to go to the gym” or “I am finishing my task” is very powerful. That inner negative voice simply won’t be able to compete with that. A. So silence the negative voice by expressing out loud what you truly want and what’s best for you. B. Overcome negative voice. C. So the first step is to admit it. D. Use powerful words silently as many as possible. E. That little negative voice didn’t come out of nowhere. F. Whenever you catch that voice telling you something negative, replace it with something positive. G. It may even tell us that you are not good enough to do a certain task. 第三部分 英语知识运用 (共两节,满分 45 分) 第一节 完形填空(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分) It happened before a match.
