A
My 12-year-old daughter, Lauren, came home from school yesterday, proudly waving her grade
book. She had been awarded A-1 in most subjects, such as mathematics, language arts and science—a
great achievement! Then she sadly pointed out that her perfect score was damaged by a B-1 in French
and a C-1 in physical education.
I asked her what the scores meant. She said that the letter showed the achievement and the number,
effort. That was when it struck me that the grades were misleading. I gave her a big hug and told her
that in my book, she had a perfect score. It didn’t matter that her grade in French was a “B”—the “1”
showed that she had tried her best. That is something to make any parent proud.
Everybody is different. Everybody has different potential( 潜 能 ). Not all of us will become
linguists(语言学家) or sports stars. But without 100% effort no potential can be achieved. If I see a
salesperson under-delivering, the first thing I want to examine is the effort being put in. If there is a
problem with effort, the salesperson probably has no future. It is impossible to turn round someone who
just wants an easy way out. But, if I see 100% effort, but a lack of success, the salesperson is worth my
effort in helping him or her. Maybe a bit of training will help or some advice from a more successful
person. I know that 100% effort, focused in the right direction, will always bring a result, whether that
is an “A” or a “C”. As long as you make 100% effort, you are great.
21. The author’s daughter was weak in .
A. maths. B. science. C. chemistry. D. physical education.
22. What does the author think of grades?
A. High grades make parents proud. B. Grades are important to children.
C. People hold a wrong idea of grades. D. High grades show great achievements.
23. In the passage the author praises a person highly for .
A. trying his or her best. B. achieving good grades.
C. having different potential. D. giving other people useful advice.

A university in southwest China’s Chongqing City set up a reading room as part of a campaign(活
动) that stops students from taking their mobile phones with them in case the device distracts(使分心)
them from concentrating on their studies.
Reportedly a student named Hu Xiaopeng participating in the campaign studied 530 minutes
without using his mobile phone. Unlike Hu, another one picked up his mobile phone in less than 20
minutes. “Having seen many students use their mobile phones in the library, a habit that shortens their
study time and negatively impacts their learning, we decided to open this reading room,” said Zhang
Shuran, the person responsible for the project at the university.
Zhang added that students can keep their phones in appointed bags with numbers on them. The
bags are placed on a desk near the door of the reading room. “Staff members at the reading room will
check the phones when there’s a call,” said Zhang, adding that they will inform students when their
parents or teachers call them, but will not tell students if an unknown person is calling or when there is 高二英语试题第 4 页(共 8 页)
a text message. Based on the time students hand in their phones when they come to the reading room
and the time they get them back when they leave the room, Hu Xiaopeng from College of Animal
Science and Technology of the university set a record of the longest time. Hu spent 530 minutes
studying without using his phone. Though feeling somewhat surprised, Hu said, “It’s bad to keep
mobile phone with you when you are reading or studying.”
The campaign has attracted nearly 200 students since it was launched a week ago. Some Internet
users praised the campaign. One user named Liu Jingchang said, “It’s good. I don’t bring my phone
when going to the library in case I get distracted.”
24. Why is the reading room opened in Chongqing City?
A. To prevent students using mobile phones in the library.
B. To help students focus on their studies.
C. To prevent the mobile phones from being stolen.

25. What can we infer from Paragraph 3?
A. The bags are on the desk near the students.
B. The time when the mobile phones are put in the bags is recorded.
C. The student will be informed if a stranger calls him.
D. Hu Xiaopeng thinks the campaign is a bad idea.
26. What is the attitude of the Internet users toward the reading room?
A. Cautious. B. Supportive. C. Doubtful. D. Anxious.
27. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. New methods to attract students to read.
B. The harm of mobile phones.
C. A reading room aiming to concentrate students on their studies is set up.
D. Students are encouraged to study with their mobile phones.

Each of us fails from time to time. If we are wise, we accept failure as a necessary part of the
learning process. But all too often we convey to our children either by words or by actions that failure
is something to be ashamed of, and that nothing but top performance meets our approval(赞许).
Donnie was my youngest third-grader. His fear of failure kept him from classroom games that
other children played excitedly. He seldom answered questions—he might be wrong. He seldom
finished his work because he repeatedly checked with me to be sure he hadn’t made a mistake.
I tried my best to build his self-confidence, but nothing changed until midterm, when Mary Anne,
a student teacher, was assigned to our classroom. She was young and pretty, and she loved children.
My pupils, Donnie included, respected her. But even enthusiastic, loving Mary was baffled by this little
boy who feared he might make a mistake.
Then one morning we were working at math problems. Donnie had copied the problems with
painstaking neatness and filled in answers for the first row. Pleased with his progress, I left the children
with Mary. But when I returned, Donnie was in tears. He’d missed the third problem.
Mary looked at me in despair. Suddenly her face brightened. From the desk we shared, she got a 高二英语试题第 5 页(共 8 页)
canister(金属小圆筒) filled with pencils.
“Look, Donnie,” she said, “I’ve got something to show you.” She removed the pencils and placed
them on his desk. “See these pencils, Donnie?” she continued. “They belong to Mrs. Lindstrom and me.
See how the erasers are worn? That’s because we make mistakes too, lots of them. But we erase the
mistakes and try again. That’s what you must learn to do too.”
She kissed him and continued, “I’ll leave one of these pencils on your desk so you’ll remember
that everybody makes mistakes, even teachers.” Donnie looked up with love in his eyes and just a
glimmer(一丝) of a smile.
The pencil became Donnie’s prized possession. That, together with Anne’s frequent
encouragement and praise for even Donnie’s small success, gradually persuaded him that it’s all right
to make mistakes—as long as you erase them and try again.
28. Why did Donnie rarely finish his work?
A. Because he seldom answered those difficult questions.
B. Because he spent too much time checking his answers.
C. Because he couldn’t work together with his classmates.
D. Because he never did his work until the very last minute.
29. The word “baffled” in Paragraph 3 most probably means “ ”.
A. encouraged. B. impressed. C. satisfied. D. confused.
30. Which of the following words best describe Mary Anne as she is shown in the article?
A. Patient and inspiring. B. Creative and modest.
C. Determined and strict. D. Considerate and proud.
31. The story was written mainly to .
A. tell us who influenced Donnie greatly. B. sing Mary Anne’s praises.
C. give a lesson about failure. D. show us how to use erasers.

Most people say that they do not usually feel confident. But exciting things can happen when we
actually believe in ourselves. Here is a man who believed in his own ability even as a boy, and that
confidence helped shape his adult life.
At the turn of the last century, a young boy quit school to help with the family expenses. When he
was fifteen, he became interested in automobiles(汽车) and worked in a garage. He subscribed to a
correspondence course(函授课程) on automobiles and, after a long day in the garage, studied at the
kitchen table in the lamplight.
When he felt ready, he walked into the Frayer-Miller Automobile Company of Columbus, Ohio.
When Mr. Frayer noticed him, he asked, “Well, what do you want?”
“I just thought I’d tell you I’m coming to work here tomorrow morning,” the boy replied.
“Oh! Who hired you?”
“Nobody yet, but I’ll be on the job in the morning. If I’m not worth anything, you can fire me.”
“Early the next morning the boy returned to the plant. Noticing the floor was thick with metal
shavings and accumulated dirt, the boy got a broom and set out to clean the place.

Reading Newspapers Is a Good Habit
Newspapers are important media. They can provide all kinds of latest news from both at home and
abroad, which can help us understand the world better.
Newspapers can also make our life rich. In newspapers, we can read stories about a variety of
people, and find weather reports, introductions to new books, advertisements on traveling and so on.
As English learners, reading newspapers in English, such as China Daily, is one of the best ways
to improve our English. There are many words, phrases and structures for us to learn. And what’s more,
we can acquire abundant knowledge of history, culture and society.
There is no doubt that reading newspapers is a good habit.
