(广东省湛江市高三上学期调研)My husband and I used to think we had all we had ever
wanted. A beautiful house, three healthy children and one more on the way, two cars, a couple of
four-wheelers for entertainment—We really had it all and we loved it. Then, the market turned and my
husband's job at a construction company was gone. The company was closing down forever.
We both started looking for jobs right away, but there weren't any to be found. With each passing day
we were getting increasingly worried and we continued to work together in order to pull our family through.
The more we pulled together, the closer we got. I felt feelings of admiration for my husband that I hadn't felt
for years.
That's why it was so hard for me to watch him blame himself for our present situation. I continually
asked him to stop but he seemed to want to punish himself for not having a job.
Finally, one afternoon I pulled him aside and said, "We have four healthy children and each other.
That's what's important. That makes you a rich man."
"But what if we lose the house? They will hate me—you'll hate me, "he replied.
I smiled at him and put my hands on both sides of his face to make him look me in the eye. "No matter
where we live I will be happy—as long as I have you, "I smiled again as I realized that I wasn't just saying
that. In all the struggling together I had found that deep love for him that I had on the day we said "I do".
I could see his shoulders and neck relaxed. He held me close and we were able to talk and plan and
dream together in a way that we hadn't for quite some time. It was a turning point for us as a couple and a
family.
We are still struggling for our better life, but I consider us well-off because we have something that
money can't buy and no one can take away from us.
24. We know from the story that .
A. they both found good jobs at last
B. her husband was out of work for his not working hard
C. both of them felt anxious about their unemployment
D. they didn't love each other any longer after they got married
25. By saying "The more we pulled together, the closer we got", the wife means .
A. her husband worked harder for being closer
B. they had closer affection as they struggled together
C. their house was closer to the company than before
D. they were closer to another employment as time went by
26. What is their present life like?
A. Hard but warm.
B. Wealthy but annoying.
C. Hard and disturbing.
D. Comfortable and admiring.
27. Which of the following might be the best title?
A. Better Life Comes
B. Hard Time Goes
C. We Have It All
D. We Lose It All

(河北省承德市高三上期末试题)When Dee Dee Bridgewater learned that she would become a
2017 NEA Jazz Master, a series of thoughts and feelings flooded her mind. “It was so far out of my orbit and
just my whole sphere of thinking,” she said in a conversation at NPR this spring, hours before she formally
received her award.
She’s 66-far from retirement age in jazz, and on the extreme forward edge of the NEA Jazz Masters
people. So she was aware of her relative youth in the field She also recognized that there haven’t been many
women in the ranks of NEA Jazz Masters: fewer than 20, out of 145. That idea led her to reflect on her
predecessors (前任): legendary singers like Betty Carter* who was seated back in 1992, and Abbey Lincoln,
who received the nod in 2003.
Bridgewater sought inspiration and advice from both Carter and Lincoln, as she recalls in this period
of Jazz Night, which features music recorded during the season opener for Jazz at Lincoln Center. On a
program called “Songs of Freedom”, organized by drummer Ulysses Owens, Jr., Bridgewater sang material
associated with Lincoln as well as Nina Simone: an extremely angry song of the civil rights movement, like
“Mississippi Goddam”.
A separate concert, “Songs We Love”, found Bridgewater singing less politically charged (but still
exciting) fare like “St. James Infirmary”, which appears on her most recent album. In words as well as music,
this period reveals how seriously Bridgewater takes that responsibility, seeing as how it connects to her own
experience in the jazz lineage. But maybe “seriously” isn’t the right word when it comes to Dee Dee, whose
effervescence (欢腾) shines through even in a reflective mood. Join her here for a while; she’s excellent
company, no more or less so now that mastery is officially a part of her resume.28. What did Bridgewater think of her winning the award?
A. It confused her.
B. It was beyond her expectation.
C. It won great popular support for her.
D. It gave her much confidence about her career.
29. What can we learn about the musicians winning NEA Jazz Masters?
A. Women ranked higher than men.
B. Men accounted for a bigger part of them.
C. Most of them were unwilling to retire at first.
D. Many of them received the award at an early age.
30. Who is more likely to have a great influence on Bridgewater?
A. Carter and Lincoln.
B. Ulysses and Lincoln.
C. Nina Simone and Carter.
D. Nina Simone and Ulysses.
31. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A. Bridgewater’s music theme.
B. Bridgewater’s music experience.
C. Bridgewater’s personal characters.
D. Bridgewater’s great achievements.

(湖北省荆州市高三第一次质量检测)Levi Strauss did not invent jeans, but he is considered the
first person to make and sell great numbers of them. He was born in Bavaria, an area that today is part of
Germany. In 1847 he and his family immigrated to the United States. Levi Strauss opened a small dry goods
store, first in New York, then in San Francisco, California. Among the products he sold were jeans. These
pants were especially useful for miners in California. They needed clothing made from a strong material.
Jeans are usually made from a heavy cotton cloth called denim (牛仔布). Levi Strauss partnered with a
clothing maker named Jacob Davis. Davis had invented a process for making rivets (铆钉) for jeans. These
little metal connectors helped hold the pieces of cloth together to make the jeans stronger.
In 1873, the government gave Strauss and Davis a patent (专利证) for their invention. That meant no
one else could legally copy it without their permission. They began producing what they called
“copper-riveted waist overalls”. In 1928, the Levi Strauss Company registered (注册) the word Levi’s as a
trademark for their product. The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History in Washington has
one of the oldest known pairs of Levi’s.
Writer James Sullivan published a book called “Jeans: A Cultural History of an American Icon”. In it,
he says jeans represent two American values: creativity and rebellion. Cowboys wore jeans in the old Wild
West. In the 1950s, people saw famous Hollywood actors like James Dean and Marlon Brando wearing jeans
in movies. Today jeans still come in blue but also lots of other colors. They can also differ widely in price.
You might find jeans for 15 dollars in an American discount store. However, they can also sell for thousands
of dollars a pair.
Some people like to buy Jeans that look fresh and new. Others like to buy new jeans that are tom and
look old. Early rock and roller Gene Vincent released “Blue Jean Bop” in 1956. The energetic song includes
a line with the word “dungaree”. That is another way of saying blue jeans. It is an old Hindi word meaning
coarse calico, or denim. The word came from the name of a village that is now Mumbai.
32. What can we learn about Levi Strauss from Paragraph 1?
A. Levi Strauss opened his first jeans store in New York.
B. Levi Strauss was born in a jeans-making family in Bavaria.
C. Levi Strauss invented jeans and sold great numbers of them.
D. Levi Strauss cooperated with Jacob Davis to make and sell jeans.
33. Davis invented rivets for jeans in order to .
A. make the Jeans wear well
B. compete with other jean-makers
C. gain a patent to popularize his products
D. decorate the jeans to make them more beautiful
34. What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs?
A. Jeans show the different tastes of people.
B. Jeans have become important American values.
C. Jeans enjoy a wide popularity in the life of American people.
D. Jeans were more popular among cowboys in the old Wild West.
35. The passage mainly talks about .
A. the history of jeans
B. the features of jeans
C. the life story of Levi Strauss

Dear David,
I’m glad to know that you are launching a campaign “Approach to China” aiming to introduce your
peers to a thriving China and be of some help.
From my perspective, the activities may range from Chinese calligraphy competition to paper cutting,
martial arts, appreciation of Beijing Opera and so on. As for Chinese elements, the Great Wall with a long
history symbolizes the national fighting spirits while high-speed railway representing the cutting-edge
technology takes the lead in the world. China’s booming economy is marked with bicycle sharing and One
Belt and One Road Initiative.
By the way, mascots like pandas and Monkey King will enjoy great popularity among participants.
Wish your campaign a success.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
