Last week, at a construction site near Austin, Texas, workers heard the cries
of a puppy(小狗). They went around the construction site trying to figure out where
these cries were coming from. They figured the puppy was trapped somewhere. Then they
realized it was actually coming from the sky. High above their heads, a puppy was
flying through the air-in the claws of a hawk(鹰). At that very moment, the bird
suddenly let go and the tiny screaming puppy-no older than 6 weeks old-fell to them.
Aside from a few minor. wounds on his head, the puppy was surprisingly unhurt.
The workers quickly brought him to a medical clinic, and from there, the puppy found
his way into the care of the Austin Animal Center. "We don’t know where he came,
from-whether he was born as a stray(流浪狗)or whether he was in a home and got
out, ” Olohan, communications director for the Austin Animal Center, explains.
The paratrooper got a new name that came naturally: He would be called Tony Hawk.
Considering his tininess-not much bigger than a mouse-Tony Hawk probably seemed like
a good idea to a hungry hawk. Tony Hawk’s fears calmed down soon after he found himself
on the ground, mostly because he found a foster home to ease him into his new life.
In a month or so, he will be looking for a forever home.Olohan thinks he won’t wait long. "We’ ve had plenty of interest, tons of
applications for him,"she says. "He’s certainly not going to have a problem finding
a home. "So a tiny puppy without a past found himself free from the claws-thanks to
the warm, caring hands that will help him shape a brand-new future.

In a new study published in journal JAMA Paediatrics, researchers found the amount
of time that children under the age of two spend looking at screens on digital devices
has more than doubled over a 17-year period.
The team took a look back at a time when mobile phone use was far less common
than it is today, assessing children’s screen time in 1997 and then comparing it
to 2014. The researchers used statistics previously gathered by the Child Development
Supplement Panel Study of Income Dynamics at the University of Michigan, analysing
data regarding 1,327 children in 1997 and 443 children in 2014.
According to their findings, children under the age of two in the US would spend
an average of 1. 32 hours in front of a screen on a daily basis in 1997. By 2014,
this average had increased to 3. 05 hours, more than doubling over 17 years. In
comparison, children aged between three and five spent an average of two and a half
hours in front of screens on a daily basis in 1997. This had increased slightly to
three hours a day by 2014.
“There is growing concern over the amount of time that children, particularly
very young children, spend watching shows and in front of screens,” said Weiwei Chen,
assistant professor in the Department of Health Policy and Management. “Our findings
were surprising as it feels like mobile devices are everywhere, but televisions are
still the most common way for young children to consume media. Further research is
needed to assess changes in media consumption and device use in more recent years. ”
Experts warned that vulnerable children could face becoming “lost in digital
space” as they’ re growing up without enough Internet safety education.
8. What can we know about the new study?
A. It took 17 years to conduct.
B. It included children born in 1997
C. It compared statistics from two different periods.
D. It was done by two organizations working together.
9. How did the daily screen time of children between 3 and 5 change?
A. It almost doubled. B. It reduced slightly.C. It reached 2. 5 hours. D. It saw
a small change.
10. What surprised the researchers?
A. Children spent more time on TV than on mobile devices.
B. Digital devices gained more popularity among children.
C. Children stared at screens for much longer than before.
D. Digital devices failed to attract young children.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. Screen Time Damages Children’s Health B. New Methods Found to Reduce Screen

In a new study published in journal JAMA Paediatrics,
researchers found the amount of time that children under the age of two spend looking
at screens on digital devices has more than doubled over a 17-year period.(在《美
短语;涵盖性强,一般要求能覆盖全文,其确定的范围要恰当,既不能太大,也不能太小;
此时,要注意一些转折词,如 but, yet, however, although, in
spite of, by contrast, on the contrary 等。
In a new study
published in journal JAMA Paediatrics, researchers found the amount of time that
children under the age of two spend looking at screens on digital devices has more
than doubled over a 17-year period.(在《美国医学会儿科杂志》上发表的一项新研究中,

They block entrances, crowd street corners and tip onto their sides, turning a
convenient form of transportation into a sidewalk danger that is particularly
dangerous for the elderly and disabled.
Now a new California company is working on a possible solution for stopping the
chaos caused by electric scooters(滑板车)in cities around the country. The
company, known as Swift mile, has unattended charging stations for e-scooters that
are designed to serve as a place where riders can park the scooters between rides.
The company’s founder, Colin Roche, said the sola-powered charging stations-which
can accommodate any brand of e-scooter-are most suitable for areas that are often
crowded with the scooters, such as bus and subway stations.
As the weather warms and ridership increases, that struggle is expected to
intensify. On one. side of the debate, experts say, are cities whose leaders want
to reduce traffic and encourage alternative, environmentally-friendly patterns of
transportation to battle against climate change and promote innovation(创新). Some
local officials also fear that restricting scooter companies will cast cities in an
outdated light, discouraging technology companies from doing business there in the
future. On the other side of the debate are critics who have complained about e-scooter
companies for blocking walkways and selling a product whose use has led to thousands of injuries among riders and pedestrians, many of them severe.
Pat Burt, a former Palo Alto mayor who is currently advising Swift mile, said
the future of e-scooters could depend heavily on what happens in 2019. Cities have
identified the benefits of e-scooters as well as the. drawbacks, which could become
existential for the companies. “If the. safety and other problems aren’t addressed,
I think cities will restrict them even more, “he said. “But there’s a good chance
scooters will be adopted universally if these problems get solved. ”
12. What is the main idea of the first paragraph?
A. The elderly are easy to get injured. B. E-scooters are difficult to find.
C. Many problems are caused by e-scooters. D. New inventions provide people with
convenience.
13. What can e-scooter owners do at the charging station?
A. Park their e-scooters. B. Get their e-scooters repaired.
C. Have their e-scooters cleaned. D. Charge their e-scooters for free.
14. What benefits can e-scooters bring to the cities?
A. Attracting more tourists. B. Reducing traffic pressure.
C. Making the roads much safer. D. Increasing the local company’s
profits.
15. What decides the future of e-scooters according to Pat Burt?
A. The public’s attitude. B. The improvement of traffic.
C. The solving of present problems. D. The benefits of the new business
model.
