B When her five daughters were young, Helene An always told them that there was strength in unity (团结). To show this, she held up one chopstick, representing one person. Then she easily broke it into two pieces. Next, she tied several chopsticks together, representing a family. She showed the girls it was hard to break the tied chopsticks. This lesson about family unity stayed with the daughters as they grew up. Helene An and her family own a large restaurant business in California. However, when Helene and her husband Danny left their home in Vietnamin 1975, they didn't have much money. They moved their family to San Francisco. There they joined Danny's mother, Diana, who owned a small Italian sandwich shop. Soon afterwards, Helene and Diana changed the sandwich shop into a small Vietnamese restaurant. The five daughters helped in the restaurant when they were young. However, Helene did not want her daughters to always work in the family business because she thought it was too hard. Eventually the girls all graduated from college and went away to work for themselves, but one by one, the daughters returned to work in the family business. They opened new restaurants in San Francisco and Los Angeles. Even though family members sometimes disagreed with each other, they worked together to make the business successful. Daughter Elisabeth explains, "Our mother taught us that to succeed we must have unity, and to have unity we must have peace. Without the strength of the family, there is no business." Their expanding business became a large corporation in 1996, with three generations of Ans working together. Now the Ans' corporation makes more than $20 million each year. Although they began with a small restaurant, they had big dreams, and they worked together. Now they are a big success. 24. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage? A. How to Run a Corporation Well B. Strength Comes from Peace C. How to Achieve a Big D. Family Unity Builds Success 25.What can we infer about the An’s daughters? A. They went out to work for themselves before graduation. B. They all would not like to work in their family business. C. They were deeply influenced by what Helene taught them. D. There always were disagreements among family members 26. Helene once used chopsticks to show ______ A. the quality of the chopsticks B. the difficulty of being united C. the strength of family unity D. how to be a strong person 27.We can learn from Paragraph 2 that the An’s family ______ A. began to run a restaurant in 1975 B. left Vietnam without much money C. bought a restaurant in Los Angeles3 D. opened a sandwich shop in San Francisco C “In only six days I lost seven pounds of weight.” “Two full inches in the first three days!” These are the kinds of statements used in magazine, newspaper, radio and television ads, promising new shapes and new looks to those who buy the medicine or the device. The promoters of such products say they can shape the legs, slim the face, smooth wrinkles, or in some other way add to beauty or desirability. Often such products are nothing more than money-making things for their promoters. The results they produce are questionable, and some are dangerous to health. To understand how these products can be legally promoted to the public, it is necessary to understand something of the laws covering their regulation. If the product is a drug, FDA(Food and Drug Administration) can require proof under the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act that it is safe and effective before it is put on the market. But if the product is a device, FDA has no authority to require premarketing proof of safety or effectiveness. If a product already on the marker is a danger to health, FDA can request the producer or distributor to remove it from the market voluntarily, or it can take legal action ,including seizure(查封)of the product. One notable case a few years ago involved an electrical device called the Relaxacisor, which had been sold for reducing the waistline. The Relaxacisor produced electrical shocks to the body through contact pads. FDA took legal action against the distributor to stop the sale of the device on the grounds that it was dangerous to health and life. Obviously, most of the devices on the market have never been the subject of court proceedings( 诉 讼 ), and new devices appear continually. Before buying, it is up to the consumer to judge the safety or effectiveness of such items. 28. It can be inferred that the ads mentioned at the beginning of the passage are ______. A. illegal B. unreliable C. objective D. costly 29. Which of the following will the author probably agree with? A. The court is in charge of removing dangerous products. B. It is possible that new products are questionable. C. The production of a device must be approved by FDA. D. The promoters usually just care about profits. 30. The Relaxacisor is mentioned in the passage as_______. A. a product which was designed to produce electricity B. a product whose distributor was involved in a legal case C. a successful advertisement of a beauty product D. an example of a quality beauty product 31. By writing the passage, the author intends to _______.4 A. make consumers aware of the promoters’ false promises B. show the weakness of the law on product safety C. give advice on how to keep young and beautiful D. introduce the organization of FDA D Researchers continue to show the power behind our sense of smell. Recent studies have found, among other things, that the smell of foods like pizza can cause uncontrollable anger in drivers on roads. The review explains that smell is unique in its effects on the brain. According to Conrad King, the researcher who carried out the review, “more than any other senses, the sense of smell goes through the logical part of the brain and acts on the systems concerned with feelings. This is why the smell of baking bread can destroy the best intentions of a dieter.” Smell, which dictates( 决 定 ) the unbelievable complexity of food tastes, has always been the least understood of our senses. Our noses are able to detect up to 10,000 distinct smells. Our ability to smell and taste this extremely large range of smells is controlled by something like 1,000 genes (基因), which make up an amazing 3% of the human genome. Researchers Richard Axel and Linda Buck were together awarded a Nobel Prize in 2004 for their ground-breaking research on the nature of this extraordinary sense. These two scientists were the first to describe the family of 1,000 olfactory (嗅觉) genes and to explain how our olfactory system works. According to one study in the research review, smelling fresh pizza or even the packaging of fast foods can be enough to make drivers feel impatient with other road users. They are then more likely to speed and experience uncontrollable anger on roads. The most reasonable explanation is that these can all make drivers feel hungry, and therefore desperate to satisfy their appetites. In contrast, the smells of peppermint and cinnamon were shown to improve concentration levels as well as reduce drivers’ impatience. Similarly, the smells of lemon and coffee appeared to promote clear thinking and mental focus. However, the way genes regulate smell differs from person to person. A study by researchers in Israel has identified at least 50 olfactory genes which are switched on in some people and not in others. They believe this may explain why some of us love some smells and tastes while others hate them. The Israel researchers say their study shows that nearly every human being shows a different pattern of active and inactive smell-detecting receptors. 32. What did Richard Axel and Linda Buck find out? A. The type of food smells. B. The logical part of human brain. C. The nature of human olfactory system. D. The relationship between food and feelings. 33. Which of the following can help people concentrate?5 A. Bread. B. Pizza. C. Coffee. D. Fast food. 34. What do we know from the last paragraph? A. Some people can recognize up to 50 smells. B. Every person has a different pattern of genes. C .Different people are sensitive to different smells. D. There are still some olfactory genes to be found out. 35. What is the passage mainly about? A. Logic and behavior. B. Smell and its influence. C. Sense ability and food tastes. D. Olfactory genes and its system. 第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有 两项为多余选项。 Self-care activities can help you cope with stress and improve overall well-being. 36 .
