Photos of a gentleman reading calmly in bed in the newly-built makeshift hospital in Wuhan,

Aaron Fotheringham has been an amazing person with backflips( 后 空 翻 ) and other
skateboarding tricks throughout his teens. And his famous backflip has won worldwide notice in the
form of Record. Why did his particular backflip earn such a reputation? Aaron was the first person to
successfully perform a backflip in a wheelchair.
Aaron was born ill. He has been in a wheelchair since the age of 8. Since then, he has even
developed a new extreme sport in which wheelchair-bound athletes use their chairs like skateboards or
bikes to do tricks. Now Aaron’s friends call him "Wheelz", and he says it’s huge praise.
Though Aaron makes his stunts(特技表演) look easy, doing tricks in a wheelchair is very
different from using a skateboard or bike. It’s a completely different skill set.
If a skateboarder goes into a backflip like Aarons and doesn’t start out with enough rotation (旋
转), he or she can bend his or her body to speed up. This allows a skateboarder to make complete
rotation in time for a successful landing. But Aaron can’t bend his body any more than it is already. Your hard work will pay off!
“停课不停学”2021 届高二英语检测卷 第 4 页 共 12 页
That means Aaron has to have everything perfect before going into a backflip. He needs to launch
himself to just the right height. If he doesn’t, he could fall on the ground completely. "My rotation is
so quick that I don’t have much time to think," says Aaron.
Aaron’s stunts take a lot of practice. He tries to make it to the skate park every day to work on his
backflip and try out new tricks. Even though he’s an excellent athlete, Aaron doesn’t always land his
stunts perfectly. But Aaron says he doesn’t let bad landings stop him. He gets right back up and goes
for his backflip again.
25. What do we know about Aaron?
A. He can do backflips as a disabled person.
B. He is an excellent skating athlete.
C. He has had to sit in a wheelchair since birth.
D. He has developed a new game by using chairs.
26. Being called "Wheelz", Aaron felt .
A. disappointed B. happy C. angry D. ashamed
27. What is the most important thing for Aaron to perform a backflip?
A. Starting out with enough rotation. B. Bending the body to speed up.
C. Reaching a suitable height. D. Having enough time to think.
28. What would be the best title for this text?
A. A Disabled Teen Competes in Adventure Games
B. A Teen Performs Excellent Stunts
C. A Disabled Teen Wins Respect from Others
D. A Teen Performs a Backflip in a Wheelchair

Holidays are really important. Many of us will have childhood memories of summer holidays
where we were taken away from home to experience new environments and learn in different ways.
But holidays are expensive and, for those on low wages or living on benefits, they are often
unobtainable. Even the cheapest holidays require travel and other additional costs that are difficult for
many families to meet.
For working parents, the long summer break can be a very difficult problem for childcare. When an
annual leave allowance amounts to only five weeks, there is a need to spread this across the year.
Couples can find themselves taking leave in turn in order to care for children who are on holiday. For
some, this makes even an affordable family holiday difficult.
The schools that I visit in Nottingham are full of experienced staff committed to giving our children
a caring and inspiring learning environment. The number of children receiving free school meals is quite
large in Nottingham and many schools have breakfast clubs to make sure that children get a healthy start
to the day. Most schools undertake programs of group or individual educational support. Schools also
have an important role in safeguarding children's welfare through the ongoing touch and support with
their pupils. During the long summer holidays, much of this is missed.
While teachers are holidaying in the UK, many of their pupils spend the whole six weeks on the Your hard work will pay off!

street where they live. The lack of free school meals for six weeks can result in pressure on a family
budget and an inability to afford the inspiring experiences that help children to continue their learning.
In setting out its plans for a five-term year, Nottingham City Council(委员会) is seeking to reduce
the summer holiday down to four and a half weeks, with a more balanced five terms of roughly eight
weeks, each followed by a two-week break. We believe this will give real "down time" for school staff
and pupils alike but will be short enough not to cause a real break in learning.
We acknowledge that this change may be difficult for some school staff, particularly whose own
children are educated in other authorities. However, this must be weighed against the benefits for city
children for whom we all have the greatest duty of care.
29. The passage is probably written by ________.
A. an experienced teacher B. a working parent
C. an inspired student D. a city council member
30. The underlined word "they" in the second paragraph refers to "________".
A. environments B. holidays C. wages D. benefits
31. The plans for a shorter summer holiday will help students ________.
A. obtain the cheapest holidays without additional costs
B. get a chance to spend six weeks a term with teachers in school
C. benefit more from the caring and inspiring learning environment
D. have more school days to receive free school meals
32. It can be inferred from the passage that ________.
A. working parents can enjoy a five-week break to care for their children
B. the suggested plans for a five-term school year can hardly be carried out
C. the long summer holiday gives teachers and students real "down time"
D. some school staff will say "No" to the plans for a shorter summer holiday

Four years ago, we asked ourselves: what if we could create a shopping experience with no waiting
in lines and no checkout? Or could we create a physical store where customers could simply take what
they want and go? Our answer to those questions is Amazon Go, where you could experience the idea of
“just walk out shopping”.
Amazon Go is a new kind of store with no checkout required. We created the world’s most
advanced shopping technology, so you never have to wait in line. With our “just walk out shopping”
experience, simply use the Amazon Go app to enter the store, take the products you want, and go! No
lines, no checkout.
Our checkout-free shopping experience is made possible by the same types of technologies used in
self-driving cars: computer vision, sensor fusion, and deep learning. Our “just walk out technology”
automatically detects when products are taken from or returned to the shelves and keeps track of them in
your virtual cart(虚拟购物车). When you’ve done shopping, you can just leave the store. Shortly after,
we’ll charge your Amazon account and send you a receipt(收据).
We offer delicious ready-to-eat breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snack options made fresh every day by Your hard work will pay off!

chef-designed Amazon Meal Kits, and you can make a meal for two in about 30 minutes.
Our 1,800-square-foot shopping space is conveniently compact(紧凑的), so busy customers can
get in and out fast. It is located at 2131, 7th Ave, Seattle, WA, on the corner of 7th Avenue and Blanchard

When we buy something new, we get rid of what's old. That cycle of consumption has made
electronics waste the world's fastest-growing solid-waste stream, which is expected to grow as the world
upgrades to 5G.
While promising faster speeds and other benefits, 5G will result in a dramatic increase in e-waste.
That's good business for ERI, which charges customers to collect their electronics and to securely wipe
their data. But less than a quarter of U. S. electronic waste is recycled, the rest ending up as rubbish,
posing environmental risks.
Part of the problem concerns regulation(法规). In states without laws banning electronics from the
regular trash, electronics often end up in garbage and recycling bins. Even when e-waste rules exist, it's
left to consumers to handle their old devices properly. But recycling them can be a pain. Rather than drop
a used phone in a bin, lots of people have to take their electronics to a store, which may pay them for it or
charge them to get rid of it. Many consumers simply throw their devices into the trash or throw them in a
drawer.
One solution is to make electronics last as long as they once did. Yet, technology companies are
speeding the pace of being deserted. “it's a strategy by producers to force us into shorter upgrade
cycles, ” said Kyle Wiens, the founder of iFixit, which publishes do-it-yourself repair guides.
Some environmental groups say big companies like Apple and Samsung should pick up the cost of Your hard work will pay off!

recycling the devices they sell. Lawmakers have passed Extended Producer Responsibility ( EPR) laws,
which require producers to establish and fund systems to recycle or collect abandoned products.
Some companies are increasing their recycling efforts on their own. For instance, Apple in 2018
introduced Daisy, a smartphone-recycling robot that can take apart 200 iPhones every hour. But that's a
drop in the bucket compared with the 50 million tons of e-waste generated globally last year.
37. What's the problem 5G technology will cause?
A. Failure in some traditional business.
B. Faster and shorter cycle of electronics.
C. Many electronics ending up as waste.
D. Added cost to recycling old electronics.
38. How does Kyle Wiens view the act of technology companies?
A. They design to shorten the life cycle of products.
B. They struggle to provide goods with good quality.
C. They have a short life cycle because of the market.
D. They are trying to collect their abandoned products.
39. What's the duty that Daisy performs daily?
A. Funding to collect abandoned iPhones.
B. Guiding people on do-it-yourself repair.
C. Checking environmental risks of phones.
D. Taking apart smartphones automatically.
40. What is the best title for the text?
A. A Choice for Recycled Smartphones B. Dealing with the Mountain of E-waste
C. Bad Effect of 5G on the Environment D. Apple on Its Duty for Nature Protection
