He was physically violent and emotionally abusive to me throughout my childhood, and I felt that I couldn’t forgive him. And yet, now he is dying, unconscious and struggling to breathe through an oxygen tube after a major stroke, all I can think of is how much he loved me. How he would hold my fringe (刘海) back and kiss me on the forehead before school. How he bought me a pottery set and roller skates, although we were struggling by on just his salary, and allowed me to skate to school. How he would play chess and tennis with me, and take me to endless chess and tennis tournaments, even though I never won anything. How he would read the Guardian every day and fill in the quick crossword, but leave a few clues and praise me if I solved them. He kept every one of my Guardian columns, and every article I ever had published, even during our many estranged (疏远) periods. He gave me a lot of his savings to buy a flat after I became a single mum. And he set my date of birth as the passcode on his phone. Yet I’m ashamed to say I blamed him, often, for everything: my anorexia (厌食症), my cutting, my anxiety, my depression... He was there during the tough times, yet all I could think was that the tough times happened because of him, forgetting that the causes of events are complex, and that plenty of people who had happy childhoods have to deal with mental illness and domestic violence too. I even stopped him from seeing my daughter, the thing that brought him most happiness, because I was scared he would hurt her, and that her life would be like mine. That decision would mean he never spoke to me again. When we spent time together in previous years, my father hugged me a lot yet never talked much. Born in 1930s America during the Depression, he was a man of few words, a silent romantic who signed his empty Valentine’s cards to my mother with only his first initial. I know he thought I talked too much; ironically, I never told him what I needed to. Knowing he was old, I tried to get back in touch several times to make things right, but my mother said he didn’t want to hear from me. I understand that. Why would he want to hear from the daughter who was never able to forgive him for his mistakes; who brought them up time after time, unable to accept his apologies? Who prevented him from seeing his granddaughter? Who scolded him for his faults, yet never acknowledged his 第 4 页 / 共 9 页 numerous kindnesses? It’s much too late now. When I sit by his hospital bed and hold his large wrinkled hand, far too warm, and ask him to squeeze it if he can hear me, he doesn’t. So I tell him a few of the things I should have told him when he was conscious, though it’s hard to say the words: that I love him very much, and that I’m sorry about the estrangement. And it reminds me of what I’ve known for a long time: that my dad didn’t know how to be a father to me when I was young, because his father was abusive to him as a child. His father died estranged from his son; my father is dying estranged from his daughter. I never thought that I’d feel this broken at losing him. I fantasise that his eyes will open, and that he will be conscious again for just a few days. I will give him a letter thanking him for all the things I have remembered while writing this piece, and apologizing for all the ways I have wronged him. And when I deliver the letter, I will bring my five-year-old daughter with me, so he can see her happiness and sweetness, and learn that the chain of hurt that has been passed down from generation to generation has finally been broken. 24. The separation between Father and the daughter is mainly caused by ______. A. Father’s cruelty towards the daughter B. Father’s irresponsibility for the family C. the daughter’s protection of her kid from harm D. the daughter’s misunderstanding of her father 25. Father rejected his daughter’s offer to get in touch with him because ______. A. he was too ashamed to face his daughter B. he couldn’t support his daughter any more C. he couldn’t pardon his daughter’s ignorance D. he was content to live away from his daughter 26. What message does the author want to convey in the underlined part? A. The granddaughter will break the family chain to live freely. B. The previous way of family education will no longer continue. C. There will be no restriction in the family from that moment on. D. Father will leave the world without any regrets and sufferings. 27. What might be the best title of the passage? A. East or west, home is best B. A good medicine tastes bitter C. It’s no use crying over spilt milk D. Where there is life, there is hope C It’s common knowledge that the woman in Leonardo da Vinci’s most famous painting seems to look back at observers, following them with her eyes no matter where they stand in the room. But this common knowledge turns out wrong. A new study finds that the woman in the painting is actually looking out at an angle that’s15.4 degrees off to the observer’s right—well outside of the range that people normally believe when they think someone is looking right at them. In other words, said the study author, Horstmann, “She’s not looking at you.” This is somewhat ironic, because the entire phenomenon of a person’s gaze (凝视) in a photograph or painting seeming to follow the viewer is called the “Mona Lisa effect” . That effect is absolutely real, Horstmann said. If a person is illustrated or photographed looking straight ahead, even people viewing the portrait from an angle will feel they are being looked at. As long as the angle of the person’s gaze is no more than about 5 degrees off to either side, the Mona Lisa effect occurs. Horstmann and his co-author were studying this effect for its application in the creation of artificial-intelligence avatars(虚拟头像) when Horstmann took a long look at the “Mona Lisa” and realized she wasn’t looking at him.To make sure it wasn’t just him, the researchers asked 24 people to view images of the “Mona Lisa” on a computer screen. So why do people repeat the belief that her eyes seem to follow the viewer? Horstmann isn’t sure. It’s possible, he said, that people have the desire to be looked at, so they think the woman is looking straight at them. Or maybe the people who first coined the term “Mona Lisa effect” just thought it was a cool name. 28. What is generally believed about the woman in the painting “Mona Lisa”? 第 5 页 / 共 9 页 A. She attracts the viewers to look back. B. She seems mysterious because of her eyes. C. She fixes her eyes on the back of the viewers. D. She looks at the viewers wherever they stand. 29.What gaze range in a painting will cause the Mona Lisa effect? A. B. C. D. 30 . Why was the experiment involving 24 people conducted? A. To confirm Horstmann’s belief. B. To create artificial-intelligence avatars. C. To calculate the angle of Mona Lisa’s gaze. D. To explain how the Mona Lisa effect can be applied. 31.What can we learn from the text? A. Horstmann thinks it’s cool to coin the term “Mona Lisa effect”. B. The Mona Lisa effect contributes to the creation of artificial intelligence. C. Feeling being gazed at by Mona Lisa may be caused by the desire for attention. D. The position of the ruler in the experiment will influence the viewers’ judgment. D GOING TO UNIVERSITY is supposed to be a mind-broadening experience. That statement is probably made in comparison to training for work straight after school, which might not be so encouraging. But is it actually true? Jessika Golle of the University of Tübingen, in Germany, thought she would try to find out. Her result, however, is not quite what might be expected. As she reports in Psychological Science this week, she found that those who have been to university do indeed seem to leave with broader and more inquiring minds than those who have spent their immediate post-school years in vocational (职业的) training for work. However, it was not the case that university broadened minds. Rather, work seemed to narrow them. Dr. Golle came to this conclusion after she and a team of colleagues studied the early careers of 2,095 German youngsters. The team used two standardized tests to assess their volunteers. One was of personality traits, including openness, conscientiousness(认真)and so on. The other was of attitudes, such as realistic, investigative and enterprising. They administered both tests twice—once towards the end of each volunteer’s time at school, and then again six years later. Of the original group, 382 were on the intermediate track, from which there was a choice between the academic and vocational routes, and it was on these that the researchers focused. University beckoned for 212 of them. The remaining 170 chose vocational training and a job. When it came to the second round of tests, Dr. Golle found that the personalities of those who had gone to university had not changed significantly. Those who had undergone vocational training and then got jobs were not that much changed in personality, either—except in one crucial respect. They had become more conscientious. That sounds like a good thing, certainly compared with the common public image of undergraduates as a bunch of lazybones. But changes in attitude that the researchers recorded were rather worrying. In the university group, 第 6 页 / 共 9 页 again, none were detectable. But those who had chosen the vocational route showed marked drops in interest in tasks that are investigative and enterprising in nature. And that might restrict their choice of careers. Some investigative and enterprising jobs, such as scientific research, are, indeed beyond the degreeless. But many, particularly in Germany, with its tradition of vocational training, are not. The researchers mention, for example, computer programmers and finance-sector workers as careers requiring these traits. If Dr. Golle is correct, and changes in attitude brought about by the very training Germany prides itself on are narrowing people’s choices, that is indeed a matter worthy of serious consideration. 32. Which of the following can best replace “beckoned for” in Paragraph 2? A. Examined. B. Attracted. C. Organized. D. Recognized. 33. What can we learn from the research? A. The degreeless have not changed in personalities. B. Going to university is a mind-broadening experience. C. Working straight after school narrows people’s minds. D. College students pride themselves on their education. 34. According to the last two paragraphs, A. college students enjoy a very good public image B. the undergraduates have changed significantly in attitude C. the degreeless are much better at dealing with challenging tasks D. people show less interest in investigative jobs due to vocational training 35. What is the author’s attitude towards the finding? A. Concerned. B. Optimistic. C. Unclear. D. Sceptical. 第二节 七选五(共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Open Hearts to Life We often close ourselves off when unlucky events happen in our lives. We try to reduce the hurt and pain by pretending it doesn’t exist. 36 We need to learn to open our hearts to the potentials of life. The items listed below are the ways you can open your heart more fully and completely. Breathe into pain. Whenever a painful situation arises in your life, try to embrace it instead of running away. 37 If we run away from sadness, it will get stronger and more real. By making use of our breath, we soften our experiences and allow more newness and greater experiences to blossom. 38 I know we’ve all felt decisions or actions that we had to take simply due to our “gut” impulses(冲动): when asked, we can’t explain the reasons behind doing so — just a deep knowing that it had to get done. To start this process, take few deep breaths and then ask, “Heart, what decision should I make here? What action feels the most right?” See what comes up, then take action and evaluate the outcome. Spend time alone. For most of our lives we’re surrounded by people: our friends, colleagues, family members, and strangers. How often do we really spend time alone? When you spend time in solitude, you’re free from the influences of other people, and can truly open yourself and explore whatever you’d like. See where your thoughts take you. 39 Get outside of yourself. 40 After you’ve explored the depths of yourself, you come away with a new understanding. Now, it’s time to share that — not through telling others, but through being with others. When you’re in a group of people, try to give them your full energy and attention so you can understand them just as you did yourself. Appreciate their uniqueness, as if they are an extension of you. Lose yourself in the 第 7 页 / 共 9 页 beauty of others; see what they can teach you about yourself. A. Embrace the uncomfortable. B. Ask your heart what it wants. C. In the end, though, we can’t hide from ourselves. D. We should take a step back and re-evaluate our behavior. E. When the sadness strikes, take a deep breath and lean into it. F. The golden ticket here is to not let yourself become distracted; just see what it’s like to be alone. G. This may seem a little contradictory to the last tip, but in reality, they actually work hand-in-hand. A Game of Light and Shade It was a sunny day.
