I walked to Mrs. Windsor’s house and waited outside. She was working with another
student, and I was not supposed to bother them by ringing the bell. I stood against the wall
and daydreamed what I’d rather be doing. I had been tutored enough to read, understand, and
even write some musical compositions, but I just didn’t have a gift for it. Mrs. Windsor had
offered to give me the lessons for free, so I felt my duty to try.
The door opened and Wendy Barton came out. I walked in, sat down on the piano bench
and began to sort through my sheet music. Today Mrs. Windsor introduced her niece Pasha to

Ownership used to be about as straightforward as writing a cheque. If you bought
something, you owned it. If it broke, you fixed it. If you no longer wanted it, you sold it or
threw it away. In the digital age, however, ownership has become more slippery. Since the
coming of smartphones, consumers have been forced to accept that they do not control the
software in their devices; they are only licensed to use it. As a digital chain is wrapped ever
more tightly around more devices, such as cars and thermostats, who owns and who controls
which objects is becoming a problem. Buyers should be aware that some of their most basic
property rights are under threat.
The trend is not always harmful. Manufacturers seeking to restrict what owners do with
increasingly complex technology have good reasons to protect their copyright, ensure that
their machines do not break down, support environmental standards and prevent hacking.
Sometimes companies use their control over a product’s software for the owners’ benefit.
When Hurricane Irma hit Florida this month, Tesla remotely updated the software controlling
the batteries of some models to give owners more range to escape the storm.
But the more digital strings are attached to goods, the more the balance of control leans
towards producers and away from owners. That can be inconvenient. Picking a car is hard
enough, but harder still if you have to dig up the instructions that tell you how use is limited
and what data you must give. If the products are intentionally designed not to last long, it can
also be expensive. Already, items from smartphones to washing machines have become
extremely hard to fix, meaning that they are thrown away instead of being repaired.
Privacy is also at risk. Users become terrified when iRobot, a robotic vacuum cleaner,
not only cleans the floor but also creates a digital map of the inside of a home that can then be
sold to advertisers (though the manufacturer says it has no intention of doing so). Cases like
this should remind people how jealously they ought to protect their property rights and
control who uses the data that is collected.
Ownership is not about to go away, but its meaning is changing. This requires careful
inspection. Devices, by and large, are sold on the basis that they enable people to do what
they want. To the extent they are controlled by somebody else, that freedom is compromised.

Bees are unimaginably territorial (有地 盘意识 的), fighting to death to defend their
home with painful stings (螫刺). But killer bees are particularly fierce. They appeared after
African bees were imported to Brazil in the 1950s. By the 1980s, they had spread north to the
United States, outgunning native bees along the way. Their massive attacks have killed more
than 1,000 people.
Mario Palma, a biochemist at Sao Paulo State University in Rio Claro, Brazil, who
studies social behavior in bees, wanted to understand the basis of this aggression. So he and
his colleagues swung a black leather ball in front of some killer bees and collected the bees
whose stingers got stuck in the ball during the attack. They also collected killer bees that
remained in the cell. The analysis suggested that killer bee brains have two proteins that—in
the aggressive bees—quickly break into pieces to form a so-called “neuropeptide (神经肽)”,
they reported this week in the Journal of Proteome Research.
Palma and his colleagues already knew that bee brains have these two proteins. “We
were astonished when we identified some very simple neuropeptides, which were produced in
a few seconds,” Palma said. Killer bees that remained in the cell did not make these
neuropeptides, he reported. And when his team put these neuropeptides into young, less
aggressive bees, they “became aggressive like older individuals”.
Palma added that these neuropeptides also increase the production of energy and
alarm chemicals. They could also encourage the nerve cells in killer bees needed to make the
stinging attack. “There is a fine biochemical regulation in the killer bee brain,” he said.
Researchers have found these neuropeptides in other insects, but few had associated them
with “fight” behavior.

How to Retain More of Every Book You Read
In recent years, I have focused on building good reading habits and learned how to read
more. For most people, the final goal of reading a nonfiction book is to actually improve their
life by learning a new skill, understanding an important problem, or looking at the world in a

use to make my reading more productive.
Make all of your notes searchable. Having searchable book notes is important for

The journey my daughter Cathy has had with her swimming is as long as it is beautiful.
