G-7 LEADERS READY TO HELP BATTLE AMAZON WILDFIRES
WITH TECHNICAL AND FINANCIAL MEANS”
French President Emmanuel Macron announced this afternoon that the G-7 leaders had reached an agreement on how to help fight the record number of forest fires currently raging in the Amazon.
"There is a real convergence(趋同性)to say we all agree to help the countries harmed by these fires as quickly as possible,” the host of the G-7 summit told reporters in French from the conference venue in Biarritz. He went on, listing all of the contacts being made, “With all the countries of the Amazon...so that we can finalize very concrete technical and financial commitment.”
On Friday, Macron threatened to block an important EU trade deal with Brazil and other South American countries, claiming that Brazil's president J air Bolsonaro had lied about his position on climate change.
Hours before the beginning of the annual meeting of world leaders on Friday, Macron released a video outlining his plan to mobilize all of the powers gathered in Biarritz to partner with Amazon countries “to invest first in fighting the fires and helping Brazil and the other impacted countries and then to invest in reforestation every where".
Macron emphasized France's stake in the fires, referencing French Guiana, a former prison colony and current overseas department of France located on the northeastern edge of the Amazon rainforest. Bolsonaro shot back, accusing Macron of having an "unacceptable" and “colonialist" mindset.
Over 75,000 fires have been recorded in the Amazon rainforest so far this year, more than double the 40,000 blazes recorded there in all of 2018, according to Brazil's National Institute for Space Research. The fires can be caused by natural phenomena, like lightning strikes, but are often intentionally set by loggers and ranchers clearing land for cattle grazing or farming. Bolsonaro, a climate change skeptic, has encouraged farmers to exploit the land and weakened government agencies tasked with enforcing environmental regulations, NPR reported.
Smoke from the blazes has reached as far east as the Atlantic coast and blocked out the sun as far away as Sad Paulo, more than 2,000 miles to the south. Meanwhile NASA is tracking a carbon monoxide plume stretching across Brazil into the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans.

I love books to an illogical degree. In books, I find psychological and emotional refuge, education and deep wisdom that I just don't find elsewhere. My passion is connected to the words and the form they come in—printed
pages bound together. So I'm not afraid to admit that when I read an article about how print book sales had risen (modestly) and e-book sales had declined (a bit) and that the number of independent bookstores had increased over the past year, I shed tears of joy.
It wasn't that long ago that everyone was predicting the end of print and the death of small bookstores. If people were reading, they were doing it digitally, and if they were buying paper books, they weren't getting them from independent shops. The future looked grim for small stores. But more and more, we keep hearing about the resurgence of the independent bookstore and how print is not dying after all. As The New York Times reported, “While analysts once predicted that e-books would overtake print by 2015, digital sales have instead slowed sharply."
And one wonderful consequence of the changing market is that bookstores are slowly coming back. “That's right. The phoenix rises from the ashes. According to the American Booksellers Association, there are now 2,321 independent bookstores in the United States," reported NPR's Paddy Hirsch in March 2018. " And there are a couple of things that happened to prepare the grind for this recovery. When Amazon came along, the independents were destroyed, sure. But the corporates—the big-box stores and the chains—really got crushed. Borders, for instance, went out of business altogether. So that left a gap for the indies(独立小公司)to fill.”
That's hundreds of new, independent bookstores, which is just plain exciting. (I love to find local booksellers whenever I'm in a new city or town, and I know I'm not alone in that regard.) The good news started to turn around a few years ago. Plus, sales at independent bookstores were up about 9 percent in 2018 from the year before, according to the American Booksellers Association.
You can carry a number of books with you on an e-book reader, which is an undeniable bonus. But it's not that hard to choose one or two books to carry around.
28. Which of the following best describes the author as a book reader?
A. General. B. Ambitious. C. Demanding. D. Crazy.
29. Why did people think print was dying according to this passage?
A. Because e-books had more advantages.
B. Because people didn't like independent shops.
C. Because electric reading devices were popular.
D. Because e-books cut the cost of reading.
30. What makes the comeback of the bookstores possible?
A. The market has changed completely.
B. New independent bookstores get the chance.
C. The bookstore chains were back on business.
D. Bookselling patterns vary from store to store.
31. What could be the best title of this passage?
A. Books have wisdom that can't be found elsewhere.
B. E-books will not have bright future any more.
C. Readers love to buy books in local bookstores.
D. Pap er books and the independent bookstore aren't dead.
D
Artificial intelligence technology may now be just as accurate at detecting diseases from medical imaging as
human health care experts, new analysis suggests. The study, conducted by a team of international academics from hospitals in the UK, US and Switzerland, was a review of all existing scientific literature comparing the performance of Al models and health care professionals published between January 2012 and June 2019.
Researchers said analysis of 14 studies comparing the performance of deep learning with that of humans found algorithms correctly detected diseases in 87 percent of cases in the sample of images, compared to the 86 percent that was achieved by human experts. The ability to accurately exclude patients who didn't have a disease was similar between algorithms (93 percent) and health care experts (91 percent).
Despite the close results, researchers warned there were limitations to the study, citing a severe lack of quality analysis directly comparing the performance of human experts and AL “ We reviewed over 20,500 articles, but less than one percent of these were sufficiently robust in their design and reporting that independent reviewers had high confidence in their claims," said Professor Alastair Denniston from University Hospitals Birmingham, who led the research.
The UK-based academic added: “What's more, only 25 studies proved the Al models externally, using medical images from a different population, and just 14 studies actually compared the performance of Al and health professionals using the same test sample. Within that handful of high-quality studies, we found that deep learning could indeed detect diseases ranging from cancers to eye diseases as accurately as health professionals. But it is important to note that Al did not substantially outperform human diagnosis." “So there may be hope for humans just yet,” researchers said. The report complained most studies analyzed algorithmic results in a way that does not reflect clinical practice.
The paper noted that scientific studies about artificial intelligence and algorithms have typically been conducted in isolation—not considering the trove of additional clinical information that medical professionals often have to take into account before making a final diagnosis.
32. What do we know about the study in Paragraph 1?
A. Human health care experts had a competition with AI
B. The study was performed by experts throughout the world.
C. AI could diagnose diseases correctly from medical imaging.
D. Experts went through all existing scientific literature.
33. What does the underlined word “robust” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Strong. B. Basic.
C. Flexible. D. Modern.
34. What is the imperfection of the study?
A. It was not scientifically based.
B. It just reviewed a small number of samples.
C. It only involved a few disease diagnoses.
D. Human health experts didn't perform well.
35. Which column of the newspaper is this text most likely from?
A. Science study. B. Our world. C. Campus life. D. Star stories.
