Text 1
M: Hi, Susie, it’s been too long since I saw you last! How’s life been?
W: Couldn’t be better. College life is going great.
Text 2
M: What time is the party?
W: Uh, it starts at 7:00. So, can I pick you up at 6:40?
M: That would be a little tight. Let’s set out half an hour earlier.
Text 3
M: I’ll set two alarms. When the first one rings, I’ll get up and get ready. When the second one rings, I’ll walk out of the door.
W: That’s a good idea. Then you’ll get to work on time.
Text 4
M: You can’t keep your eyes open. You had better go home and take a rest.
W: I guess you’re right. I’ll see you tomorrow.
Text 5
M: Don’t you think the new student is a little strange? He doesn’t even say a word unless he is asked a question.
W: It’s probably because he doesn’t have any friends yet.
Text 6
M: Hey, Linda. Look at these shoes!
W: High heels! I love them! Where did you find them?
M: I was looking at the sale part. Are they your size?
W: Let me look. No, they’re size 9. I wear size 7.
M: Too bad.
W: Hey, Alex. Let’s both look at the sale part. Maybe we can find some shoes for you there.
M: Good idea!
Text 7
W: James, do you like your smart speaker?
M: Yes! It’s great. Do you want to buy one?
W: I’m thinking about it! But I don’t know much about them.
M: They’re so convenient. I talk to my smart speaker, and it looks up things.
W: When I want to find information, I use my smart phone.
英语 全解全析 第5页(共5页)
M: Finding information is easier with a smart speaker.
W: OK, what else can you do with one?
M: You can check the weather, shop for things and schedule things on your calendar. You can do it all with just your voice!
W: Wow, it can do almost everything!
M: It can also control a smart home.
W: Hmm, my home isn’t very smart! I won’t use it for that.
Text 8
M: Come in. Please sit down.
W: Thanks, Mr. Harold. I’m Georgia.
M: OK, what can I do for you, Georgia?
W: Well, I’ve worked here as a typist for about a year, and I’d like to have a chance of advancement.
M: What job are you applying for?
W: I’d like to be a secretary in the personnel department.
M: Is your English good enough?
W: I think so. I’m studying English at a language school.
M: What about your typing speed?
W: I can type 50 words per minute.
M: OK, Georgia, you have the ability and I know you can do the job. The trial period is one month.
W: Yes, I know. I have 30 days to learn the job, right?
M: That’s right. You can start on the 1st of July, OK?
W: No problem. I’ll try my best to be up to the new job.
M: Well, good luck.
Text 9
M: Good morning, doctor.
W: Good morning.
M: My daughter Mary hasn’t been feeling well and she has a fever. Can you please have a look?
W: OK. Please take off her jacket. I will just listen to her back and check her throat.
M: How is she?
W: Her throat looks red. I think she has an infection. I will prescribe her some medicine.
M: How long does she need to take them?
英语 全解全析 第5页(共5页)
W: About a week but she can continue for another week if she doesn’t feel better. She should probably rest for a few days too and not go to school.
M: She has become very weak recently. She gets cold very easily too. Can she take a shower?
W: Absolutely, taking a cool shower actually helps reduce the fever in a natural way.
M: Wow, I didn’t know that. When should we come back again?
W: I want to see her next week, but if she gets worse, you can come and see me regardless.
M: Thank you so much, doctor.
W: You are welcome. It’s my pleasure. I hope she gets well soon.
Text 10
Is it possible to drive a car without using one’s hands or feet? An experiment carried out at Berlin’s Free University has shown that this may indeed be possible. The theory behind the thought-controlled car is not new. Researchers have been working on ways to link the human brain directly to a computer for years. In the future, the knowledge gained may be useful in aiding those who can’t walk and those who can’t control their arms but have minds that are fully functioning.
The technology behind the idea is complicated. It is easy to detect brain waves with sensors on the skin, but it is very difficult to check out exact orders from the noise going on inside the human mind. At the moment, thought-controlled vehicles are only for research purposes, and scientists are not promising any major breakthroughs for the physically challenged.
