Should I Be Allowed to Make My Own Decisions?
很多青少年都有业余爱好。
Many teenagers have hobbies.
但有时候这些爱好会阻碍他们的学业，
But sometimes these can get in the way of their schoolwork,
父母可能会担心他们在校的学业成绩。
and parents might worry about their success at school.
青少年通常认为，应该允许他们尽可能多地实践自己的爱好。
Teenagers often think they should be allowed to practice their hobbies as much as they want.

Liu Yu, a fifteen-year-old boy from Shandong,
是一个赛跑明星。
is a running star.
他是校队队员，
He is on his school team,
一直希望长大后成为一名职业跑步运动员。
and has always wanted to be a professional runner when he grows up.
然而，他的父母不允许他花太多时间训练。
However, his parents won’t allow him to train so much.
“
我们当然希望看到他实现自己的梦想，”刘先生说，“
“
Of course we want to see him achieve his dreams,” says Mr. Liu.
“我们也知道他多么喜欢跑步。
“
And we know how much he loves running.
我和妻子曾经支持他的每场比赛。
My wife and I have supported every one of his races.
我们并不反对跑步！
We have nothing against running!
但是我们觉得儿子必须要考虑其他可能的工作。
But we think our son needs to think about other possible jobs.
他现在长大了，
He’s getting older now,
所以他需要考虑好万一成不了职业跑步运动员那会怎么办？”
so he needs to think about what will happen if he doesn’t end up as a professional runner.”
刘雨并不认同他们的想法。
Liu Yu doesn’t really agree.
“
哦，我觉得应该允许我自己做决定，”他说。
“
Well, I think I should be allowed to decide for myself,” he says.
“
我父母总是教育我在学校努力学习考上大学是何等重要。
“
My parents have always taught me how important it is to work hard at school and enter university.
我能理解这点，可我认真对待跑步。
I understand this, but I’m serious about running.
这是唯一我想做的事情。”
It’s the only thing I’ve ever wanted to do.”
刘宇的父母认为刘宇晚上应该用功学习，
His parents believe that Liu Yu should study hard in the evenings,
因此他们不允许他晚上出去练跑步。
so they don’t allow him to practice running at night.
“
也许他会认为我们太过严格或不公平，” 刘先生说。
“
Maybe he thinks it’s too strict or unfair,” says Mrs. Liu.
“
但我们认为我们这么做是正确的。
“
But we think we’re doing the right thing.
他必需在自己的功课上多花些时间，
He needs to spend more time on his homework,
因为要成为一个职业运动明星是很难的。”
because it is difficult to become a professional sports star.”
但刘宇还是不同意。
But Liu Yu still disagrees.
“我知道我父母关心我。

I know my parents care about me.
他们总是谈论如果我不成功怎么办。
They always talk about what will happen if I don’t succeed.
可我一定会！我是快跑运动员！
But I will! I’m a quick runner!
我觉得应该允许我自己做出这样的选择。
I think I should be allowed to make this choice myself.
只有这样，我才有机会实现自己的梦想。
