我们住在一个小镇上，
We live in a small town,
几乎每人都彼此认识。
and almost everyone knows each other.
小镇过去一直很安宁，
It used to be very quiet.
镇附近未曾发生过什么事。
Nothing much ever happened around here.
然而这些天我们镇里发生了不寻常的事。
However, these days, something unusual is happening in our town.
维克多，我们学校的一位教师，非常紧张。
Victor, a teacher at my school, is really nervous.
镇上报社采访他时说：
When he was interviewed by the town newspaper, he said,
“每天晚上我们都听到窗外有奇怪的声响。
“
Every night we hear strange noises outside our window.
我妻子认为那可能是某种动物，
My wife thinks that it could be an animal,
但我和我朋友认为那一定是十几岁小孩的玩闹。
but my friends and I think it must be teenagers having fun.
我父母报了警，
My parents called the policemen,
但他们没发现任何怪状。
but they couldn’t find anything strange.
他们认为那可能是风声，我可不这么认为！“
They think it might be the wind. I don’t think so!”
维克多隔壁的邻居海伦也很担忧。
Victor’s next-door neighbor Helen is worried, too.
“
起初我觉得那可能是只狗，
“
At first, I thought that it might be a dog,
但我没看到狗，也没看见别的任何东西。
but I couldn’t see a dog, or anything else, either.
所以我猜测它不可能是狗。
So I guess it can’t be a dog.
但它可能又是什么呢？”
But then, what could it be?”
小区的一位女士看见某东西跑走了，
One woman in the area saw something running away,
由于天黑了，所以她并不确定。
but it was dark so she is not sure.
“
我觉得它太大不可能是狗，”她说，
“
I think it was too big to be a dog,” she said.
“或许它是只熊或狼。”
“
Maybe it was a bear or a wolf.”
我们镇的每个人都感到心神不安，
Everyone in our town is feeling uneasy,
并且每个人都有自己的想法。
and everyone has his or her own ideas.
一定有某东西正拜访我们生活的这个街区，
There must be something visiting the homes in our neighborhood,
但它是什么呢？我们不知道。
but what is it? We have no idea.
大多数人希望这个动物或者人会很快离开，
Most people hope that this animal or person will simply go away,
但我觉得那事不可能发生。
but I do not think that is going to happen.
这位噪音制造者对小区制造的恐慌正处于欢乐之中。
The noise-maker is having too much fun creating fear in the neighborhood.
